Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

Death

There are times when the news of a death not only rocks you but rocks the community. Such was the effect on the community at the news of the death at the Mater Hospital on Wednesday last 21st June of Bernie Flanagan, Rathcline. Mary Bernadette more commonly known to us as Bernie was a very proud native of Inishbofin, Co. Galway from where she was predeceased by her parents Peter and Annie. Bernie arrived in Lanesboro when her husband Jimmy was offered a teaching post at what is now Lanesboro Community College. Bernie’s was diagnosed about three and a half years ago and she fought bravely with tremendous courage and spirit as was her personality.  She was a lady of great industry and she was never idle working in Clarke’s and the Misty Midlands in Longford before she embarked on a career of child-minding from her own house. Her skill was unique in terms of kindness and gentleness and to the day of her death she never forgot a birthday or an occasion nor did the youngsters, now adults ever forget the memories that she gave them. Bernie with her own inimitable smile and warmth touched the hearts and minds of everyone that had the pleasure to meet her. Describing Bernie is next nigh to impossible such is the amount of superlatives required suffice to say that she was very well read, gentle, warm, open minded and open hearted, encouraging, determined and an excellent communicator. Her popularity and what she meant to people was clear to be seen by the attendance at the reposing of her remains in Farrell’s Funeral Home on Friday and again at her Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church on Saturday and also by the comment of so many describing Bernie as a lady and so gentle. Following her Funeral Mass she was laid to rest in Clonbonny Cemetery.

To her husband, Jimmy, sons Shane and Alan, adored grandchildren, Rian and Isla Rose, her brother John, her sisters Carmel and Bridget, daughter in law, Sinead, relatives and so many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.
