Memories
On Thursday last I had the opportunities to recall many fabulous memories of growing up in a developing Lanesboro. Joe O’Neill, formerly 9 The Green, was home from the USA and Val O’Sullivan, 12 Knock, now a resident of Sligo and myself came together for coffee and a chat at the Access for All centre. Joe and Val had not met for over 50 years and for me it was a privilege to be in the company of the two lads that were truly enjoying their reunion and it was as if time stood still such was their immediate bond.
It was very fitting that Joe picked the venue as a lot of the chat was on the memories from the famous ‘Hops’ that took place for many years in the parish hall, formerly the Pillar Ballroom, and it was in our eye line as we chatted. The ‘Hops’ were organised by a bunch of youngsters and they proved to be a wonderful social event in the area. The Hop committee was so progressive as they always had any of the new entries into the top 50 English charts on a Thursday, playing on their turntable in Lanesboro that Sunday. It was really ahead of its time and was highly regarded during its time. It left many lasting memories for so many young people growing up in the area. Joe, Val and Gerry Linnane were the DJ’s and as Val said “Gerry and myself did the regular/traditional stuff while Joe played the modern music”.
Memories flooded back to the beginning and to the lads on the committee and those that are no longer with us as well as all those that were not with us on Thursday. Lots of stories were told and some never heard before but shur aren’t we are at an age we can now tell those stories.
We chatted about the town then and now and all the changes and people that we grew up with and where they lived. We all agreed that we grew up in a very happy, vibrant and growing community and how rich we were in every aspect of life. Virtually every house and business in the town and parish got a mention as practically all had young people growing up with us and creating the lasting memories.
Two and a half hours passed by as if it was just five minutes and the recollection of this meeting will live long in the memory. As I was leaving Joe asked me to give him a lift up to Winnie Connors shop. To those that have no idea of where he was talking about it was a lift up to SuperValu.
Joe was joined on the visit home by his brother Bobby who lives in London.
The photo shows Val in the middle and Joe on the right with the Pillar ballroom in the background.
