Lanesboro Ballyleague notes

Wedding

The marriage took place in St. Patrick’s Church, Mohill, Co. Leitrim on Saturday 6th August of Brian Murtagh son of Andy and Breda Murtagh, Ballyleague and Laura Coyne, Mullingar. Bestman was Ciaráin Murtagh brother of the groom while groomsman was Diarmuid Murtagh brother of the groom. Chief Bridesmaid was Eva O’Hanlon, friend of the bride and bridesmaid was Katie Hickey, friend of the bride. Flower girl was the happy couple’s daughter Esmé Murtagh. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Gabriel Flynn. The reception took place at Lough Rynn Castle. We wish the happy couple many years of wedded bliss.

Apprentice of the Year

Many congratulations to Hannah Shea daughter of Richard and Geraldine Shea, Blenavoher on being nominated for the ‘Apprentice of the Year’ award. Hannah is a third year apprentice with ESB. To be recognised at this stage tells us that Hannah is already a winner within her company. We wish her the very best of luck on the announcement of award winners.

Community Games Winners

The track & field competition of the Community Games took place at the SETU Sports Complex on Saturday last. Community Games recognises the first four home with medal awards and in the Under 16 100m there was tremendous local interest with Curraghroe young man Anthony Cox representing Roscommon and representing Ballymore Eustace and Kildare young man Peter Murphy representing Kildare in the final of the same event.

Anthony is son of Danny and Amanda Cox, Curraghroe and grandson of the late JJ and Olive Cox on his father’s side while on his mother Amanda’s side his grandparents are Tom and Carmel Smyth, Derryshanogue. He recently returned from the Gaeltacht summer school where he spent a few weeks learning Irish.

Peter Murphy is son of Keith (Cloontuskert) and Michelle (nee Wallace, Ballyleague) Murphy who are residents of Kildare for many years. Peter is grandson of Jude and Kitty Murphy, Cloontuskert and Sonny and Mary Claire Wallace, Ballyleague. It is great to know that here are local connections to two of the fastest Under 16’s in Ireland with Anthony and Peter. Peter sensationally finished off the day with a second All-Ireland medal in the mixed relay with his Kildare team.

When they say the ‘apple never falls far from the tree’ is truly exemplified in this case as in their day parents Danny, Keith and Michelle were leading members of the local Lough Ree Athletic club.

Dog Grooming by Janine

The very best of luck to Janine Carling daughter of George and Bernadette Carling, Mahoraveen who just recently set up her new dog grooming business Lily’s Parlour at Mahoraveen. If you want to contact Janine you can do so by phoning her at 087 3413795

Lanesboro/Ballyleague Town Twinning
Since Covid restrictions meant that the Lanesboro/Ballyleague Town Twinning (LBTT) committee could not have meetings things had to lapse. Now that restrictions are lifted, everything is beginning to get back to normal and the LBTT committee sees the opportunity to hold their A.G.M. in the near future. You are invited to become part of this exciting group, to bring up your ideas to discuss at the meeting. New blood is required and the outgoing committee is asking people to be part of this exciting committee.

Lanesborough has already been twinned with Lanesborough in Massachusetts, USA and have had representatives here in Lanesboro. In fact two of their Fire Department namely Butch Garrity and Max LaCasse carried the banner in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2015 and we look forward to future and exciting links and twinning.

It would be great to see a good number enthusing about this very exciting twinning project and committee. It is a wonderful opportunity for the 30/40/50 generation to involve themselves in the workings and visiting/hosting our twin towns. There are surely new and novel ideas to be had. The LBTT is busy seeking a suitable date for the AGM and hope to be able to announce the date very soon. It appears that late August early September looks the most likely time for the meeting.

 Your contributions urgently required

The importance of defibrillators in the general area cannot be overstated. The lives it can save and has done in recent weeks are well documented. Over the time of the Covid restrictions the opportunity to raise funds for the replacement of batteries and pads as well as funding needed to replace and upgrade defibrillators could not take place.

Now an appeal for essential funding is being made and the group is appealing to your generosity to ensure all the upgrades and replacements can take place.

If you wish to contribute we ask that you donate by leaving money in an envelope marked with your name into Martina O’Brien at the Corner Shop.

Ballyboro FC

This week promises to be one of most momentous in the history of Ballyboro Football Club. On Monday the second of the Summer Camps commenced, and similar to the first, it is booked out. On Friday the FAI President Gerry McAnaney will visit the camp where he will be assured of a warm welcome.

On this Saturday 20th the Official Opening ceremony of the fantastic new club facilities at Lanesboro Community College will take place. It promises to be a very special occasion. The Astro Turf pitch along with the newly developed grass pitch have been extensively utilised by the local community since they came into use. For years local people travelled distances to Astro pitches in other towns to play football, but now the club has provided a wonderful and badly needed facility locally for the benefit of the entire community, young and old. The Astro pitches are in much demand and in addition to the club and the school, have been used by Gaelic football, rugby, and county hurling teams among others.

An energetic and highly committed committee worked tirelessly, often meeting twice weekly over the course of a year, to see the project true to fruition.  In what  was a classic example of cross border cooperation  people on both sides of the bridge and further afield worked together with one goal in mind: to provide a state of the art facility for the good of all of the people in our community, young and old. The new facilities are also of great benefit to the students of the Community School and a special commemorative bench will be unveiled on the day to honour the major contribution of former principal Bernice Martin R.I.P, to the project.

The fact that such an outstanding development that cost €270,000 approx was completed and paid for in the space of one year is testament to the hard work of the committee allied to the tremendous community support. This was clearly evident when 800 people were present at the outstandingly successful OSKAR night.

All club teams will be in action as part of the Opening Day celebrations. The action gets underway at 11am while the Official Opening will be at 3pm. A special souvenir booklet will be on sale on the day. This high quality production features a number of interesting articles as well as attempting to list every player who played for Ballyboro FC since the formation of the club in 2000.

Saturday is certain to be an eventful and historic day. All in the community are most welcome to be present to mark the official opening of a wonderful community facility.
