125 Years and growing
Congratulations to Longford Leader Editor Alan Walsh and his team within the Leader who are steering the paper very successfully through their 125 Anniversary. Here is to many more successful years.
Death
Time stood still on Sunday evening last 19th June when the news broke of the unexpected and tragic death of Ronan McDermott, Ballyglass, Ballyleague at his residence. Ronan a young man whose work with EIR brought him to many parts of the country and the common thread was the comment of what a lovely young man he was. Ronan was a member of the Lough Ree Sub Aqua club and gave so much time to their support search and rescue activities. He always from a very young age had a fascination with cars and especially Formula 1. His time at GMIT, Mountbellew, was filled with wonderful memories for everyone that came in contact with him as was his time working with Bord na Mona where everyone that worked with him spoke so highly of a wonderful young man. His personality was such that practically all comments were of a gentle person, a gentleman, kind, open, fun loving, forever helpful and generous of time and spirit. He was a terrific son and parent and the love and pride of his family shone brighter than anything else. Ronan’s passing will leave a tremendous emptiness within his family, in the community and among his wide circle of friends.
The attendance at the reposing of his remains at his parent’s home in Ballyglass on Thursday and again at his Funeral Mass on Friday in the Church of the Holy Rosary bore ample testimony to the esteem this young man was held over a huge part of the country. Following his Funeral Mass Ronan was laid to rest in Cloontuskert Cemetery.
To his father Michael, mother Catherine, sister Sharon, his partner Emma, daughter Caitlín, brother in law Sean, aunts Claire, Annette, Pauline and Joan, uncles Pat Joe, Kevin, Brendan, and Sean, relatives and many many friends we extend our heartfelt sympathy.
Help needed

European Award &Pieta Amber Flag
Lanesborough Primary school celebrates Mindfulness and Digital Technology.

On Monday the 13th of June, Lanesborough Primary School earned two prestigious awards namely the Digital Schools of Europe Award and the Pieta Amber Flag.
Both initiatives have been running since September and the staff at Lanesborough Primary School have engaged tirelessly with each programme.
The Digital schools of Europe award is the only award in Europe that contains the European Commission logo and consequently Ireland and Lanesborough Primary school are one of the first countries and schools anywhere in Europe to receive this award.
Dublin West Education Centre is the only education centre in Europe with permission to use the European Commission logo – this logo is associated with excellence and is only used for outstanding programmes of merit within the European Union.
As the Digital Technology Coordinator, Rory Leonard has worked tirelessly since 2015 in upgrading the school’s Digital Technology infrastructure in order to be eligible for admission to this esteemed programme.
In recognition of this work, Lanesborough Primary School is in the esteemed position of being one of only fourteen schools in Europe to be awarded this honour. It has been given to Lanesborough in recognition of outstanding achievement in the integration of Digital Technology with learning in the school.
Our school’s infrastructure has been greatly improved since September as each classroom has a Clever Touch Interactive Screen. Each screen was installed by Toomey Audio visual services by their knowledgeable engineers. We also acquired a set of twenty-five Chrome books from Compupac IT Solutions, who were very helpful in setting up our Google admin service within the school and provided training to the Digital school’s coordinator.
Examples of this include the use of green screen technology to supplement our learning in the classroom. The Infant classroom utilised this technology when they were performing their Skeleton Dance during our Halloween Assembly. 1st and 2nd also enjoyed using green screen to visit Hogwarts School of witchcraft and wizardry – we had several Harry Potters on that day. 5th and 6th class used this innovative technology to tell stories and poems over the Christmas term.
The Pieta Amber Flag
Niamh Rohan entered the school into the Amber Flag program this year. The Pieta Amber Flag Initiative recognises the individual efforts of primary and secondary schools, youth reach, third level institutions, community groups and clubs to create healthy, inclusive environments that support mental well-being.
Since September, there have been several new initiatives in the school because of this. For the first time ever, each class took part in Yoga classes which were held in the community hall. Bewell yoga brought us on a six-week yoga journey. During the 6 weeks, each class embarked on a Yoga journey around the world. The pupils really enjoyed this activity and found it to be beneficial for their mindfulness and mental health.
Not only did our school take part in this initiative but the pupils brought the Amber flag into their homes also. They were given a well being Homework grid which contained activities such as meditation, eating their favourite meal, going on a walk and even visiting a friend.
On the 6th of May, our school community arrived into school dressed in yellow. Each child donated towards our Pieta House fundraiser.
The school organised a ‘Wellbeing Week’ on the 13th of May which focused on the different aspects of wellbeing and friendship each day of the week. Each day was given a positive nickname which was: Marvellous Monday, Terrific Tuesday, Wonderful Wednesday, Tremendous Thursday and Fabulous Friday.
All classes participated in positive mental health activities each day. These ranged from positive affirmations to self-esteem games, mindfulness breathing and colouring, discussing the importance of a healthy diet and being active.
The final project undertaken by the school was a ‘Design a Poster’ competition within the school to raise awareness of positive mental health strategies.
The presentation ceremony was attended by Dr Daithí Ó Múrchú of Dublin West Education Centre and Deputy Joe Flaherty. Dr Ó Múrchú spoke about the digital schools of Europe award ‘Lanesboro NS has consistently proven that it’s a vision for 21st century emerging technologies is deeply embedded in the daily lives of their whole school community. This digital schools of Europe award recognises the most incredible work being undertaken by the school to ensure that the #nextgenerationeu students in rural Ireland are top class! Deputy Flaherty spoke about the impact about mental health in Ireland today. He recognised the work that was undertaken by Mrs Rohan and the school.
‘It is a very exciting project for Lanesboro school and I was very impressed with the students and it is remarkable to think that it is only 1 of 14 schools in Europe to have attained this award. It is really heartening to see how well the pupils engaged with it and it really brought home the value and importance of technology in modern education.’
‘It was a busy day at the school, as they also raised their Amber flag and this was a follow on for their get active initiative and an important focus on wellbeing and mental health awareness. It is great to see the school being so proactive in two key areas for development of our youngest people.’
These awards were an excellent end to what was a very productive year at Lanesborough Primary School.
Death
On Wednesday morning last 22nd the wider area was really saddened to learn of the death of John Collins, The Green. John a native of Killea, Co. Tipperary came to work as fitter with Bord na Mona during the 60’s. John was predeceased just six years ago by his wife Lena. The skills of his trade knew no bounds for John such was his attention to detail and expertise. He was a very popular work colleague until his retirement when he took up boatbuilding for a time. In our youth Tom McGrath and Frank Toner taught us the skills of hurling and when they finished we thought that was the end of hurling but along came John who honed our developing skills to a higher degree. Turn up on the Green with or without a hurley or sliothar John would be there with one or both. If you were on your own he would come out and hurl with you. A founder member of the local Naomh Ciarán Hurling Club, a maker and repairer of hurleys in his garden shed, it was the place of many great stories from his hurling days. John honed the skills of generations and he had the uniqueness of being able to give the same attention to you whether you could hurl or not – he still made you feel that you were the best hurler in Ireland. John was a wonderful and skilful hurler but he was also a wonderful teacher and he developed some of the finest hurlers ever seen in the area.
John was a wonderfully loyal family man and with him family was first and foremost. He was a wonderful, neighbour, friend and confidant. He was a gentleman beyond all gentlemen and that was the word that described John when people heard of his passing. We are all the richer for having John Collins in our community.
His remains reposed in Farrell’s Funeral on Thursday and on Friday his remains were removed from his residence to St. Mary’s Church for his Requiem Mass followed by the laying of his remains in Clonbonny cemetery alongside Lena. To his daughter Anne, son in law Tomás, grandchildren Daniel, Andrew and Hannagh, sisters Rose, Josie, Kathleen, bothers Bill, Tom and Frankie, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.
Birth
Many congratulations to Laura Skelly and her husband Shane Fitzpatrick, Aughamore, on the birth last week of a baby girl.
Kayaking
Adult Kayaking takes place every Tuesday evening from the old harbour, Ballyleague. The Kayaking will take place from 7pm to 9pm and the cost is €20. Booking at 0872977769

Birth
Far from home in Melbourne, Australia Laura Casserley and her partner Ronan Kelly welcomed last week a baby boy. Laura is daughter of Declan and Catherine Casserley (nee Gannon), Clonfower. We congratulate the happy couple on the birth of Tadgh.
Kayaking Camp
A Kayaking Camp for young people between 10 and 17 taking place from Monday 11th July to Thursday 14th July is now totally booked out. A second camp will take place from Monday to Thursday. Wetsuits are required and all other gear will be supplied. €70 per person and 2nd member from the same family €65. To book you place please contact 0872977769. Defibrillator Group Training
An AED is an Automated External Defibrillator. It is a portable, simple to use, computerised device. When someone suffers a sudden cardiac arrest it delivers a shock to the heart to allow it to resume its normal rhythm.
An AED checks the heart’s rhythm and it automatically recognises if there is a life threatening rhythm. Once detected the AED delivers a shock to stun the heart returning it to its normal rhythm.
The local defibrillator group is actively seeking new people in the Kilgefin, Ballyleague, Cashel, Killashee and Rathcline Lanesboro areas to become competent in the use of the Defibrillator. The group are also looking to retrain and refresh those that have already completed the course.

The importance of defibrillators in the general area cannot be overstated. The lives it can save and has done in previous times are well documented. Over the time of the Covid restrictions the opportunity to raise funds for the replacement of batteries and pads as well as funding needed to replace and upgrade defibrillators could not take place.
Now an appeal for essential funding is being made and the group is appealing to your generosity to ensure all the upgrades and replacements can take place.

Blessing of the Graves on Sunday next
The Blessing of the Graves for the parish will commence Cemetery Sundays on Sunday next and as usual the first blessing of those buried in Rathcline Cemetery will take place on Sunday 3rd July at 6pm. On Sunday 10th July the blessing of those buried will be in Lanesboro Cemetery at 6pm. The third and final blessing will take place in Clonbonny Cemetery on Sunday 17th July in Clonbonny Cemetery.
Out of respect and love to all our family members and friends it is very important that all graves should be tended to prior to the Blessings.
It is also very important that all cemeteries be left in a pristine state and no littering please

Traffic Holdups
In recent times the work on the footpaths and last week the main Street has created loads of traffic holdups for locals and those driving through Lanesboro alike. The traffic holdups will continue for the next two weeks. On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next 4th, 5th and 6th July there will be road closure in and around the crossroads for night time work. The closure will be in affect from 7pm to 4am on these days and will bring the Road at the church into play.
When completed we will have a brand new roadway from just out the Longford Road right down to the bridge. Allied to the great work on the footpath the Main Street will be user friendly and create anew atmosphere in the town.
Lough Ree Golfing Society
The outing of the Lough Ree Golfing Society to Athlone GC last Friday was a bit of a disaster. It started off dry but then the heavens opened, and it continued to rain heavily after that. The decision was made to curtail the golf to 9 holes. The rain did not seem to affect the performance of Jackie Mc Donnell when returning a terrific score of 21 pts, with Aiden Cassidy and Peter Day not far behind on 18 and 15 pts. The day ended with a bit of fun when most players did not know the route back to the Clubhouse from the 9th hole, eventually everyone got there. Details of the next outing will be communicated later.
Recruiting
There is a golden opportunity for anyone interested, male or female, to become a part of the Lanesboro Fire Brigade. Convenience to the station is the main priority as the Fire Service gives tremendous training in terms of the call outs for fire and accidents and other different call outs. Train in first aid take you all the way to a first responder level that is an achievement in itself. Longford County Council Fire & Rescue Service is currently looking to create a panel for vacancies in the Retained Service of Lanesborough Fire Station. At Lanesborough Fire Station you will learn lifesaving skills, First Aid training/First Responder training and it is a golden opportunity for you to be giving back to your community.

Derryadd Wind Farm
Bord na Mona have recently been progressing a design plan for their proposed Derryadd Wind Farm development. They now want to present their draft proposal to the local community and will do so at Kenagh Community Centre this Wednesday 29th June, Killashee GAA clubhouse Thursday 30th June, Lanesboro Parish Hall on Tuesday 5th July and The Hill, Newtowncashel on Wednesday 6th July.
Please support Cloontuskert Grotto
The grotto at Cloontuskert was erected in 1987 to commemorate the Marian Year to honour Our Lady of the Rosary. Sadly on the 8th December 2021 during storm Barra, it was extensively damaged by a falling tree. A committee has now been formed to take on the task of rebuilding the Grotto. The total cost of the rebuild including replacing the statue is in the region of €3000.
With the work coming near conclusion the committee would like to thank everyone that has donate to the rebuild and ask anyone that it has slipped their mind to make their donation as soon as possible.
The new committee hope with your support and generosity to fully restore the Grotto and once again make it a focal point to honour Our Lady. They have set up an idonate page for anyone wishing to be associated with its rebuild or you can give directly to the following committee members where they will gratefully accept any donations treasurers Dympna Trautt, Áine Brady or Johnny Malone, and Sean Carty. SMART recovery is an evidence based addiction recovery support group where participants learn self-empowering techniques to aid their recovery by overcoming addictive behaviour.

Ballyleague National School Parents’ Association are currently undertaking a fundraising initiative by collecting ‘brown coins'(1c, 2c & 5c coins). Ballyboro FC
The official opening ceremony of the club’s major new development at Lanesboro Community College has been confirmed for Saturday 20th August. Since the Astro pitches and the grass pitch came into use they have been extensively utilised by the local community and have provided much needed recreational and sporting facilities in the area.
To mark the occasion the club plan to produce a special commemorative booklet. The club would appreciate if those who have any suitable material (photographs, match reports etc) would forward same to Ciaran Mullooly, Eamonn Bolger or any club officer. The material will be scanned and safely returned.
The club will be staging two Summer Camps in the coming weeks. The first one will be held from July 25th to 29th and is completely booked out. There are a very limited number of places available still for the second camp which will be staged from August 15th to 19th.
Tidy Towns Lottery
On Tuesday 21st June the jackpot for the Lanesboro Tidy Towns lottery stood at €8,700 and as it was not won the jackpot rose to €8,800 for the draw on Tuesday 28th June. The winning numbers drawn on the 21st June were 3, 4, 6 and 28. The winner of the €50 prize was Pat Kilcoyne, Barnacor, and the three €20 prizes were won by Lisa Mullane c/o Jean Fallon, Lauren Moran c/o Yacht Bar and Brendan/Mary c/o Yacht Bar.
The funds raised from the lottery is providing the financial support to do lots of planting around the town where the most recent is the shrubs planted on the recently renovated footpaths around the corner on the Longford Road. Your support is enabling the planting and we encourage greater support for funding of other upcoming projects.
Rathcline 50/50
The Rathcline GAA weekly 50/50 draw took place on Monday 13th June took place in Clarke’s Bar. The jackpot for the lucky winner stood at €460. The winner was Freya Gorman c/o Caroline McEvoy, The Green.
The Monday night draw 50/50 draw took place on Monday night 27th June at 7.30 pm in the Yacht Bar. The club is extremely grateful for your continued remarkable support.

GROW
Grow is a Community Mental Health Movement which meets every Monday at 11am in the Community Mental Health Centre, Dublin Rd., Longford. If you are feeling lonely, isolated or suffering from stress, please feel free to attend. You can call Assumpta for any further information on 086 8114135.
Support line for older people
ALONE manage a national support line and additional support for older people who have concerns or are facing difficulties relating to Covid-19. Alcohol Anon Meetings
Relatives and friends of alcoholics are welcome to attend meetings in the Family Centre building at the back of St. Mel’s Cathedral on St. Mel’s Road, any Tuesday evening at 7pm.

Day Pilgrimage to Lough Derg
A one-day Pilgrimage to Lough Derg will take place on Saturday 20th August. The bus will leave Ballyleague hall at 7am. For all enquiries and bookings contact Mary 043 33 21969. Information on the pilgrimage can be got at www.loughderg.org
Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesdays in the church from 10.30am until 8pm. It is very important that there will be at least two people in the church for each hour of the Adoration.
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament has resumed on Friday evenings, starting this Friday evening and it will take place between 6pm and 6.45pm. Exposition will be followed Mass at 7pm. It is also an opportunity to avail of the opportunity for Confession.
