Welcome Funding for Food Incubation Pods
On Friday last Minister Heather Humphreys visited Longford and made some funding announcements on the Town & Village Renewal scheme. Included in the announcements was €100,000 to the refurbishing of an old and abandoned abattoir at the back of the recently opened LanesBrew Coffee Shop. Those away from home will remember it as John Casey’s butcher’s shop.
Stephen Dowd has worked tirelessly to establish Premier Lakelands Food Hub and while this successful application is the first step in phase 1 its overall development to have four food Incubation pods created on the Main Street is a huge boost for the town and communities Creating jobs and a tourist attraction This excellent project will see the Main Street coming back to life and creating a great sense of hope for the future of our communities renewal and regeneration.it also creates a window of opportunity for fledgling artisan producers who wish to be part of this ambitious Food development from the beginning.
The funding also includes money to create a community sensory garden adjacent to the Incubation Pods. Stephen seen a great opportunity to attach a sensory garden to the project on the land at the back of the renovated building. A sensory garden is a self-contained garden area that allows visitors to enjoy a wide variety of sensory experiences. Sensory gardens are designed to provide opportunities to stimulate the senses, both individually and in combination, in ways that users may not usually encounter.
It is expected that when up and running in the near future there will be 10 jobs created at the Incubation Pods on Main Street. The pods will be a feeder to the Lakelands Food Hub that is about to be built on the Longford Road beside the Fire Station where projections shows that it will be a big job creation centre.
Incredibly, it is my belief that both departed ESB and departing Bord na Mona companies have had the opportunity to be part of the Lakelands Premier Food Hub and both did not take up the option. So much for what we have heard in giving back to the community that they are departing. We were led to believe that there would be support for local projects but to date nothing has been forthcoming. However, I still feel it is not too late for either company to show their appreciation for this project and other projects in our community by engaging with the local Collaboration Group so that there can be support for replacement business in the wake of their departure.
Stephen has met with many obstacles along the way, but his utter determination sees his dreams now set. to. become reality. I believe that Stephen may have greater news in the coming week(s), let’s hope so. Nobody has done the amount of work as Stephen has done in fulfilling this dream and it would only be right and fitting that all his tireless work is rewarded with the funding that will see the Premier Lakelands Food Hub become a reality during the coming year.
Friday was a wonderful day for Lanesboro, the start of the fight back and let us hope that there are many exciting announcements during the year for our Lanesboro Ballyleague community.
Former Resident Passes Away
The community greatly saddened to learn on Monday 21st February of the death of a former Green resident Bernadette Troy. Bernie as she was more commonly known moved to America many years ago at the tender age of 16 years. It was there she met and married Kilcormack, Co. Offaly native Pat Troy, who predeceased her only four years ago, lived and worked in Alexandria on the edge of Washington, D.C. Bernie always had a hankering for the home sod of Lanesboro and Kenmare. Herself and Pat ran two very successful Irish themed pub and restaurant Ireland’s Own and their store The Irish Walk. Bernie would always be home this time of the year for the annual Irish Goods trade fair in the RDS and her visit was never complete without a visit to Lanesboro. She was very involved for many years with the Rose of Tralee festival organising the Washington Rose pageant and travelling to Tralee with the Washington Rose. She was also involved with Project Children where young Catholic and Protestant kids were brought to the U.S. for respite from the troubles in Northern Ireland during the summer holidays.
Bernie was from a very respected and much liked family of O’Neill’s parents John and Julia, her sisters June, Maura and Patsy and her brothers Gerald, Bobby, John Henry and Joe who are still fondly remembered in Lanesboro. Bernie is survived by her son Patrick, daughter Kathleen, sister Maura (Nevada, USA) and brothers Bobby (London) and Joe (Virginia, USA) and grandchildren Mairead and Reyha to whom we extend our deepest sympathy. Bernie will be laid to rest on Friday next 4th March in St. Mary’s cemetery following Mass at the Basilica of St. Mary, Alexandria.
Boro Celtic to Celebrate
This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the historic treble winning team of ’97.
A suggestion was made that it would only be fitting to acknowledge and mark this wonderful group of players be it a local re-union or a celebration of a night away.
This event would be a celebration of the Boro Celtic club, not just the ’97 team and would include all past players, mentors and club officials.

Another Former Resident Passes Away
I was with the greatest of greatest of sadness that we learned of the death in Manchester of Enda (Andy) Gilmore formerly of the Green on Thursday last. Enda, son of the late John and Kathleen Gilmore moved to Lanesboro with his parents’ when John got a job on Bord na Mona. The Gilmore family like many of those that came to populate our town were highly thought of and added greatly to our community. He emigrated to England as a young man where he built a great and respected reputation for himself. He was a warm, friendly and outgoing man who always loved the company of friends and family. He has been in failing health for a time and fought his illness with a great strength and dignity. Enda was a regular visitor back home where he enjoyed the company of former classmates and as time went by their families. His passing will leave us all the poorer and a great sadness in our hearts. We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to his family Brendan (Longford), Teresa (Lanesboro), James (London), Ann (Manchester), Colette (Manchester), Caroline (Manchester), Tony (Lanesboro), Nicholas (Drumlish), Damian (Dublin), Cosmos (Galway/Brussels), and Lorraine (Cloonadra, Ballyleague), relatives and friends.
Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date.
Best Family Run Distillery
Congratulations to Peter, Michael and Sheila Clancy who were selected as the Best Family-Run Distillery for 2022 at the recent Irish Enterprise Awards. This is a wonderful achievement by the Clancy family and we are all very proud of them and their achievement.
They have a very simple vision for their business and that is to bring to the world, from their hometown, the finest, most highly regarded Irish Spirits. With the acclaim they continue to receive they are truly living up to their vision.
Like Old Times
From about half eleven on Sunday morning until half one it was like the days of old in Lanesboro. The lifting of the restrictions allied to Armagh on a successful run meant that Lanesboro was bumper to bumper with a huge crowd travelling through to Roscommon for their match with Mayo. The excitement that the trough traffic brings and a number of them stopping to avail of food and supplies brings extra energy and thrill to the town. Thank God for the return of crowds to matches and the thrill it brings to supporters and locals alike.
Community Orchard
The man that continues to drive Casey’s Centra and Filling Station forward and radio presenter with RosFM Radio Jim McCausland was just telling me of the new initiative that they have unveiled at Casey’s.
Each year they will be donating 250 fruit trees to local community groups to help enhance the local areas. Community Orchards are a collection of fruit trees (apple, pear, cherry, and plum) shared by communities and growing in publicly accessible areas such as public greenspaces, parks and schools.
While a traditional offers a landscape of tall trees changing with the seasons, fruit of many kinds, good soil and an array of wildlife. A Community Orchard adds to that rich mix, a place to learn and exchange knowledge, to hold festivals or seek quiet contemplation, a place for social play, work, somewhere to explore and show off how to live well with nature.
A first delivery has taken place and I am delighted to learn that Cloontuskert, Ballyleague and Lanesboro have benefitted from the first delivery and we look forward to seeing the trees grow and flourish in our community.

Women’s World Day of Prayer
At a time of great turbulence in the world the annual Women’s Day of Prayer could not have come at a more opportune time. On Friday next 4th March in St. Mary’s Church the cross-community Women’s Day of Prayer will take place at 2.30pm. This is a great opportunity for all ladies of all religions to come together in prayer, sharing our community and prayer together. Light refreshments will be served afterwards.

ATM
For almost three weeks now the ATM outside Keane’s SuperValu has been out of order. While this ATM is not serviced by Keane’s the lack of intervention to fix it has brought untold pressure on Keane’s as well as all other businesses in the town. With so much business been done with cards now there is a natural shortage of cash in each business. As people have no access for money from the ATM, they are looking for cashback from other businesses and as I said they have an unnatural shortage of money. I don’t know what financial institution is responsible but there is a great onus on them to ensure that the people of the community can access money from their ATM.
Community Challenge
Roscommon Community Challenge. takes place this Friday March 4th starting from Roscommon Community Sports Park at 8pm sharp. This community event is for everyone, walkers’ runners, joggers, individuals’ team, and families, those looking to set a time for 2022 and those that would like to improve on previous timings. Of course, it is the cuppa in the new state of the art Sports park afterwards that is important. Didn’t Covid keep us apart for long enough, so we look forward in anticipation to a great night on March 4th As in previous years this challenge has proven extremely popular with a great response from people who signed up to be part of the training programme There has been huge progression since January 5th and participants are really looking forward to getting to the starting line. Without doubt, none of this would be possible without the encouragement and professionalism received from Roscommon Sports Partnership and we are extremely grateful to Co Ordinator Noel Feeley and his staff David Brady, Daire Feeley and Michaela Fallon for all their support. There is no doubting that this challenge wouldn’t be the magnificent event it is without their help. Thank you to Roscommon Harriers for providing help with timings on the night.
Roscommon Special Olympics are a remarkable bunch of athletes, and the club are delighted to be the beneficiaries of this year’s Community Challenge, there is a thriving club within the county with bowlers and swimmers meeting every week and the Club are looking forward to resuming on the Astro pitch at Roscommon Community Sports Park shortly. Roscommon Special Olympics are incredibly grateful to the Community Sports Park, Roscommon Leisure Centre, and Roscommon Leisure Zone, for the use of their facilities. Like all groups it has been extremely hard to fundraise over the last 2 years so this event is especially important, and proceeds will enable the continued provision of these sports to a most wonderful bunch of fantastic athletes.

Rathcline 50/50
The Rathcline 50/50 draw took place on Tuesday night 21st February in Clarke’s bar. The winner of this week’s 50/50 draw was Shane Nealon, Lanesboro who won €287. It is great to see the pool on the rise once again and the winners receiving substantial amounts. Now that the lockdown restrictions are eased it would be great to see the 50/50 returning to the figure around €400 as it was pre lockdown. The draw on Monday night 28th February is taking place in the Yacht bar. The club would like to thank everyone for their continued support and would encourage everyone to become involved in the weekly draw.

St. Faithleach’s Lottery
The biweekly St. Faithleach’s Lottery draw took place on Tuesday last 22nd February for a jackpot of €12,000. The numbers drawn were 11, 12, 16 and 29. There was no jackpot winner and the €12,000 is to be won at the next draw on Tuesday 8th March. The three winners of the €40 prizes were Jimmy Tarmey, Enda Kenny and David Hynes. History was made on the Astro at the weekend when two Ballyboro goalkeepers both scored with long clearances which bounced overs the opposing goalkeepers’ heads. First up was Adrians Daniloug in the under 10 game with Inny Rovers, who scored in what was an impressive display by his team. Not to be outdone by her male counterpart Clodagh Martin repeated the feat for the under 12 girls in their encounter with Killoe Celtic. Clodagh who brought off several excellent saves, scored the equaliser after Killoe went ahead early in the second half. The Ballyboro girls had late chances to win with a penalty being saved and a shot from Chloe Kilcoyne cleared off the line. On Tuesday 22nd February the jackpot stood at €7,000 and if it was not won it will rise to €7,100 for the draw on 1st March. The winning numbers drawn on the 22nd were 8, 16, 17 and 27. Foreign Currency & Used Stamps
The library is still collecting unwanted foreign currency and old coins/notes in aid of Koins for Kids. The smallest donation can make a huge difference.

St. Mary’s Church
Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesdays in the church from 10.30am until 8pm. It is very important that there will be at least two people in the church for each hour of the Adoration.
Weekday Mass intentions can now to be booked for weekends as well as weekdays. The lifting of the Covid restrictions has returned the anniversary and family masses to be booked for any day from now on. People wishing to book masses can do so by contacting Fr Sergiy before or after mass during the week in the Sacristy.
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament has resumed on Friday evenings, starting this Friday evening and it will take place between 6pm and 6.45pm. Exposition will be followed Mass at 7pm. It is also an opportunity to avail of the opportunity for Confession.

Our U16 team travelled to Colmcille at the weekend and were gallant in defeat. There is no doubt but there are better days ahead and it will not be too long before their day will come.
Cúl Camp
The date has just become available, and we are publishing the date of the Longford GAA Cúl Camp in Clonbonny so that parents can organise holidays and not have the disappointment of their kids missing the camp. The camp will take place from Monday 11th July.

Relaunch of our 50/50 Weekly Lotto
Our club is now looking to reinvigorate the performance of our weekly lotto. Our 50/50 draw
is the catalyst for the successful day to day running of club affairs.
The attraction of the club lotto is unique with one guaranteed winner every week. And if you are
not in, you can’t win! The more entries; the bigger the pot of money to be won! The success
of our draw lies with everyone with an invested interest in Rathcline GAA.
For this reason, we are encouraging the uptake of yearly subscriptions (Pink Tickets priced at
€100) and 6 monthly subscriptions (Green Tickets priced at €50).
Subscriptions can be given to any member of the executive, in O’Brien’s, or can be bought using the online

In recent week’s it has been noticed that the Clubhouse has been periodically left open with internal lights left on overnight(s). We are asking all Clubhouse users to be mindful that the last person leaving, there is an obligation on that person to ensure lights and heating are turned off and the main door is locked and secured. Insurance obligations requires that all reasonable measures are taken to protect our property in
Clonbonny in relation to fire, theft or damage claims.
The same rule applies for pitch protection where the main gate at the road should always be closed at night time.
Membership 2022
Closure date for Club Membership is little over a month away.
Club membership lends a sense of inclusiveness where people can have a genuine say on the operations of the largest local community group in the Rathcline/ Lanesboro catchment. It’s a chance to make a
contribution and make a real difference in our club.
Being involved in the GAA gives a sense of fulfilment which is unrivalled. Club membership is open to both our players and non-playing categories.
Membership is a vital part of ensuring the club’s continued success and development.
Whether you are a player, coach, supporter, parent of a player or member of the wider community, we welcome all new members.
The monies received is funneled towards: the maintenance of facilities, playing equipment, affiliation fees, insurance, utility bills, team preparation and other administrative costs.

Players membership fees (€50) can be given to Neill O’ Connor (087) 1266780. It is important that all players senior and junior pay their membership as soon as possible to ensure compliance and benefit cover to the GAA Injury benefit fund.
Alternatively, patrons are encouraged to use our new App to buy their annual membership

The deadline for membership registration in 2022 is 31st March or prior playing games,
whichever is sooner.
Throw yourself into it. GAA clubs are enormous fun. You gain a community at the click of a
finger, regardless of the level you’re playing at, coaching roles or indeed volunteer works.
Development 2022
Over the next couple of months, our club will under take an extensive development programme
in Clonbonny. Works on our new community walkway is expected to start on the later end of
March. The walkway will be installed on the perimeter of the Prunty pitch and indeed the minor
pitch next the road with an interlink between both pitches. The walkway will be complemented
with a steel pole railing with wire mesh finish and appropriate landscape features.
Hopefully by mid-March, weather permitting and with contractor availability, the first stage of
the planned works will commence.
The second stage of the 2022 development plan will kick off later in the year with the
refurbishment of the training pitch surface. Further details will follow in the coming weeks about
prospectus works and timelines.
Club Team affairs
A county board meeting was held last Thursday night to discuss the league formats for the
coming year. It was agreed in principle to have two groups of six for the Division 1 league with
home and away games. The first five games of the league will be played without our registered
county players at senior level.
It has also been decided that if Rathcline enter a second team in the “Reserve competition”,
our club will participate in the very competitive Division 4 ranks.
A further county board meeting will be scheduled in the coming week to discuss the League
schedule and finalise the details of the participation. Attention will then turn to the senior and
junior championship formats.
Joe and Tommy put the lads through the paces on Sunday morning
Senior training continues three times a week in the build up for the first round of the league.
Our junior squad have their first challenge match outing of the year on Friday night coming 6th
March against Roscommon Gaels in Lisnamult.
It is the club’s intention to replicate last year’s success and bring new faces into the squad.

Longford GAA participation
Commiserations to Longford Seniors on losing the third round of the League on Sunday to
Fermanagh in Pearse Park on a scoreline of: Longford 1-10, Fermanagh 3-11. The next game
will take place on 12th March versus Antrim (away).
Rathcline contingent for Longford includes Iarla O’Sullivan and Oran Kenny.
