Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
County Champions
Sunday afternoon last proved to be an awful day for football with heavy and consistent rain falling before and during the Roscommon Intermediate Final between St. Faithleach’s and St. Dominick’s. The pundits had called this game as a very tight one, too close to call a winner, with prospects of a draw or a single score victory.
St. Faithleach’s, a young light and fast side, were not suited by the change of conditions against a seasoned St. Dominick’s side.
The conditions ensured that the game would be turned into a dour battle and that is exactly what happened. Very tight and tense right throughout with neither side getting more than a one-point lead before been pegged back right up to the very end when the teams finished level hence the need for the game to go into extra time.
The extra time was no different with nobody getting away from each other and the teams matching scores. As the game was coming to its conclusion St. Faithleach’s were clinging onto a single point lead when a move up the field created the opportunity for a goal which was taken with great aplomb and victory was now in the lap of the St. Faithleach’s lads. It was a lead they were not to relinquish and the Jimmy Murray Cup was coming back to Ballyleague.
We congratulate all the panel and mentors for a fabulous victory. The team will now play the Sligo champions in the Connacht Intermediate Championship.

Busy Weekend
Lough Ree Sub Aqua club has a busy few days on Friday and Saturday when they were called out for a search and rescue mission in the Shannon at Rooskey.
A man went missing in the river on Friday and the Lough Ree Sub Aqua were called out in what was very inclement weather. The search went on through Friday and Saturday with the search and rescue team working with other search and rescue teams.
When they had their job done on Saturday and when making their way home, they got the news that the Garda Search and Rescue team that they were working closely with during the day had recovered a body.
The value of having the Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club in our community cannot ever be underestimated. Their work is fabulous and their commitment is immense.
The club is always looking to attract new divers and presently are hosting a ‘Try a Dive’ in Longford Pool on Thursday nights at 9pm.

Wedding
The marriage took place in St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro on Saturday 16th October of Nicola Clarke, daughter of Una and Seamus Clarke, Gortgallon, Strokestown Rd, Ballyleague and Sean Mullervy, son of Maura and Tony Mullervy, Derawley, Drumlish.
Chief bridesmaid was Joanne Farrell, friend of the bride. Bridesmaids were Charlene Wilson, Laura Martin and Frances Noonan, all friends of the bride. Bestman was Tony Mullervy brother of the groom, groomsmen were Stephen Mullervy brother of the groom, Barry Clarke, brother of the bride and Francis Clyne, friend of the groom.
The pageboys were Tadhg and Kieran Mullervy both nephews of the groom.
The wedding ceremony was concelebrated by Fr. Merlin Kenny and Fr. Bernard Hogan.
The wedding reception took place in the Abbey Hotel.
We wish the happy couple many years of wedded happiness.
Frontline Choir
Musical Conductor David Brophy continues to come to the forefront with his development of choirs. This season he sought and got a large number of frontline workers to join his choir for some live performances.
When watching last last week’s programme on RTÉ1 there was our very own Teresa Costello (nee Donlon) as part of the choir. It was brilliant to see Teresa included as herself and herself and the Donlon family have been musical mainstays in the area for many years. Teresa performs locally at many family occasions and she is in great demand for her musical and singing skills.
It was tremendous that Teresa was also acknowledge as a frontline worker for the tireless work she does as manager of Costello’s Nursing Home Ballyleague.
Death
A lady who lived a quiet and unassuming life within our community passed away on Thursday 14th October brought a great sadness to everyone that knew her. Margaret Tiernan, Doughill in her 94th year passed away in the care of Oakwood Nursing Home, Roscommon. Margaret was predeceased by her late husband Patrick. She was the ultimate in the skill of homemaker and her sole interest was in the development of the family unit which she accomplished to great success. She was always the lady, pleasant and obliging with a warm personality.
Margaret reposed at Smyth’s Funeral Home Roscommon on Friday. The removal of her remains to St. Cecilia’s Church Curraghroe for the Mass of the Resurrection took place on Saturday which was followed by interment in Cloontuskert Cemetery. To her daughters Mary, Anne, Patricia, Una and Eilish, sons Padraig and Anthony, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends we extend our deepest sympathy.
LCC Enrolment
Lanesboro Community College continues to enhance the quality of the students emerging form the school each year and the success of their achievements can be seen with record numbers enrolled for this year. The Department of Education’s further development of five extra classrooms tells of the tremendous work that is been done by a very diligent and resourceful staff.
Enrolment for first year students for the 2022/23 school year is now open and will close on 14th January 2022.

Brendan O’Halloran our local man who gives of his time during the week evenings in Dublin is amazed that what started out as a three-week appeal should be still going and continue to grow. This past week many and varied donations of winter wear such as scarfs, gloves, toiletries and clothes were received.

The main appeal continues to be for white socks and wipes along with toiletries – shower gel, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, men’s large underwear and water wipes to include in their parcels.
If you have clothes that you no longer wear and you would like to donate them, they will be greatly appreciated. The clothes must be fit for immediate wearing and clothes you would wear yourself.

Shoe Box Appeal
Every year we pack shoe boxes full of items for kids in foreign countries for Christmas, which we are in no way against. I know there are kids suffering from poverty all over the world. This year in Ireland we are going to have more kids homeless than ever before. Brendan saw it first-hand last year in the many hostels he visited.
We have decided to plead with all of you to donate a gift box/Christmas bag for kids, boys and girls in age groups. See the listed items and age groups for ease of use at the end of these notes on www.joeobrien.ie. Eilish Dillon has continued to work very hard to get us into numerous schools in Co. Longford and her efforts have been very well rewarded. Joe and Martina O’Brien are on board, as a drop off point for anyone who wishes to donate the Christmas boxes into their shop. Brendan is appealing to people who do not have school going kids to donate what you can in a Christmas box, with age of child and boy/girl marked on it. We will be personally distributing these gifts to the hostels just before Christmas, so you know exactly where your donations are going. Go raibh maith agat.

How to use the Defibrillator
Time and time again there is always an urgent need to know how to work the defibrillator. There is a new defibrillator placed on the Cross on the Green that brings to 12 the number of defibrillators in the Lanesboro Ballyleague area. With the number of defibrillators growing in the area there is a great need for more people to become adept in its use. It is imperative that all clubs and associations in the community have people trained up.
Very soon there will be a new course beginning and if you want to be included in the new course or refresher course you are asked to leave your name and phone number with Martina O’Brien in the shop or ring Martina at 086 3858934.
Support Rathcline Cemetery
The Rathcline Cemetery group are very grateful to everyone that has contributed to the annual collection for the maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery. There is a great deal of work done in the graveyard all year and your contributions make it possible to get this work done. You are asked to place your contribution into an envelope and leave it into Joe or Martina at the corner shop.
Sleeping out for Simon
Local man Junior Hannon will this year be taking up the annual challenge of ‘Sleeping out for Simon’ at Longford Rugby Club on Friday night 10th December. Sponsorship cards supporting Junior in the challenge are in most premises in town and we would encourage your full support.
Lanesboro Primary Enrolment

Boat trips
The Access for All boat is making trips three times a day Monday to Sunday – 10am, 12 noon and 2.30pm. It has become the success that it deserves to be with nothing but excellent comments from all those that have so far availed of the boat trip. The trips cater for both able bodied and those with disabilities. Bookings continue to be very high and early booking is advisable to ensure travelling at your chosen time and day.
This is an absolutely brilliant trip with a knowledgeable on-board staff that will make the 1½ hour trip feel like a very short time.

Tidy Towns Lottery
The weekly Lanesboro Tidy Towns lottery draw took place in the Tourism Office on Tuesday morning 19th October for a jackpot of €5,300.
The numbers drawn for this week were 4, 6, 14 and 27. There was no winner of the jackpot and the jackpot for Tuesday 19th October rose to €5,400.
The winner of the €50 consolation draw was won by Ciara & girls c/o Freda Connaughton and the three €20 prizes winners were Fiona c/o Mags, Martha Farrell c/o The Yacht Bar and John Rice, Cloontuskert.
Rathcline 50/50
The Rathcline club’s 50/50 draw took place on Tuesday night 12th October in Clarke’s Bar. The lucky winning envelope drawn was in the name of Paddy Delaney, Newtowncashel who happened to draw out his own ticket who won €120. The club would like to thank everyone for their generous support.

Clonbonny Cemetery
The Cemetery committee are at present setting up a go fund me page to allay costs for the upkeep of the Cemetery. Alternatively, donations can be left into Joe & Martina or Mags hair salon. Please put your donation into a signed envelope.
The committee would like to remind people that no dumping is allowed. You are requested to bring all plastic etc with you and to dispose of through household bins.

The under 12s were in cracking form when they recorded a convincing 8-2 win over Abbey Rovers. The team played some delightful football and are improving with every game.Team and scorers: Hayden Smyth, Cathal Hanley, Jack Cassidy, Ferat Pulcu, Darragh Donlon, Oisin Dillon (5), Josh Curran, Shane Farrell (2), Charlie Boardman. The under 14s were also in fine fettle, particularly in the first half, when they accounted for Stonepark 5-3. The team were completely on top in the first half, but Stonepark came much more into the game in the second period and it took some resolute defending by the Ballyboro defence to keep them at bay. A much understrength under 13 team found Inny Rovers too good them on Saturday. Ballyboro: Eoin Beattie, Sean O’Dowd, Emry, John Farrell, Ciaran McGloin, Keilon Gilmore, Leon Malkowski, Harry Brogan, Charlie Moynihan, Senan Cox, James Cullen.
Oran Kenny made his debut for Ballyboro in the Combined Counties League encounter with UCL Harps, and marked the occasion with an expertly taken hat trick. Jordan Donlon added a fourth without reply as the Ballyboro lads showed they will be a force to be reckoned with as the season progresses. The under 8s took part in a Blitz with Killoe Celtic on the club Astro on Saturday morning. Great enthusiasm and no little skill was displayed by all the participants. Ballyboro was ably represented by Robin and Leo Donnellan, Oran and Daniel Healy, Paudi Murray, Mark Hession, Ronan Kelly, James Murray, Efosa Asemonks, Jake Nolan, and Analease Casey.

St. Mary’s Church
The numbers that can attend Mass in St. Mary’s Church is now set at 120. Feel free to return to a mass of your choice.
On Saturday evening next Mass at 7.30pm those from Aughaloughan, Augharanna, Barnacor and Blenavoher.
At 9.30am Mass on Sunday it will be turn of Carraroe, Carrowstrawley, Cashelbeg, Church Road, Church View and Clonbonny.
The 11.30am Mass will see parishioners from Clonfower, Corrigeen, Cullentra, Curraghrua, Cnoc na Gaoithe and Derrygeel.
November Lists for the Dead
Sheets for listing the dead are available in the Church porch
Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesdays in the church from 10.30 to 8pm. It is very important that there will be at least two people in the church for each hour of the Adoration.
Mass intentions will continue to be booked for weekdays for the present. People wishing to book masses can do so by contacting Fr Sergiy before or after mass during the week in the Sacristy. All that have booked masses are asked to rebook them for weekdays for the foreseeable future.
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament has resumed on Friday evenings, starting this Friday evening and it will take place between 6pm and 6.45pm. Exposition will be followed Mass at 7pm. It is also an opportunity to avail of the opportunity for Confession.

A new event at Knights and Conquests Centre in Granard, on the weekend of the 27th and 28th November.

The Shannon Gael club has wound up its season with its finale in Clonbonny last Saturday week. We would like to express our thanks to all the parents that brought their young people to train and play for us. We thank all the young people in the older grades that continued to come training and representing the club. We thank all the coaches for their continuous attendance and support and guidance of the young people placed in our care for training and matches To those that contributed to the club as sponsors or donors, be it monetary or your time in doing jobs or helping out we say a huge thanks. To Johnny Hanley and his team that always had the pitch marked we say a very big thank you.
