Grafton Street Kitchens – Thank You
The response to Brendan O’Halloran’s appeal for the Grafton Street Kitchens which is the Homeless Street Café in Dublin that looks after families and homeless people has been phenomenal. Brendan was blown away with the terrific and rapid response.
As we are not close enough to the city to supply fresh food items Brendan is asking all local people to contribute toiletries such as shower gel, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo and water wipes to include in their parcels. This week we add on white socks to the list of needs that are required on a daily basis.
There is a drop off box in O’Brien’s shop. We encourage you to be generous for those people that their daily life for themselves and their families is a living hell. Some people have enquired as to whether they can donate money. If you so wish, please put money into an envelope with your name and address on it so that you can be receipted.
It looks as if the drop off box will be in O’Brien’s well past the proposed cut-off date of Sunday 26th September and your donations will be gratefully appreciated.
Wedding
The marriage took place in St. Peter and Paul’s church, Szczyrk, Poland of Michael Heneghan, son of Gerard and Patricia Heneghan, Rathcline and Karolina Gacek, daughter of Antol and Ewa Gacek, Silesia, Bielsko-Biala, Poland on Sunday 12th September. Bestman was Gavin Heneghan brother of the groom and groomsmen were Stephen Masterson, friend of the groom Bruno San Felice friend of the groom and Matthew Heneghan brother of the groom. Matron of honour was Weronika Staboszewska, sister of the bride and the bridesmaids were Martyna Gacek, sister of the bride, and Natalia Pasiut friend of the bride.
The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Maciej Dunat. The wedding reception was held in the Alpin Hotel. We would like to wish the happy couple many years of wedded happiness.

Sympathy
We would like to offer our deepest sympathy to former residents Breffni and Tiernan O’Rourke on the death of their mother Kay O’Rourke in Laurel Lodge on Friday last 17th September.
Kay came to Lanesboro when her late husband Gerry who was transferred to Lanesboro as Garda Sergeant. Kay was a warm and friendly lady with exquisite taste in style. She was an excellent golfer winning many awards. Having lived the other side of the fence I can say that Kay was a wonderful neighbour and family friend. Kay never lost touch with Lanesboro and would return for many funerals and occasions. Even though she has been gone from Lanesboro for a good number of years her passing leaves us with very sad heart.
Her remains reposed in Glennon’s Funeral Home on Sunday last and following her Funeral Mass on Monday in St. Mary’s Church, Newtownforbes, she was laid to rest in Assylinn Cemetery, Boyle, Co. Roscommon.
New Tourism Boost
The Directors of Lough Ree Access For All CLG are pleased to announce that Phase 2 of the project is now beginning. After the success of the launch of our award-winning boat for people with disability, we are delighted to confirm we have signed contracts with James Irwin Construction Ltd for the development of our new reception centre at the North Quay, Ballyleague, Lanesborough county Roscommon. This is an exciting job-creation project with plans for new wet-room and bathroom facilities, a waiting area, exhibition area and a suite of management offices in the building leased to the CLG by our partners Waterways Ireland. This project would not have been possible without the support of the Just Transition Fund and the Dept of Environment. Communications & Climate Change, our corporate sponsors DPD Ireland and the local community. We wish James and his staff well in the coming weeks as the work gets underway and we look forward to the official opening in due course when the public will enjoy fantastic new facilities in a terminus type centre at the quayside. We also hope to make a further announcement about the development of a 2nd vessel for people with disability in the next 4 weeks – in association with the Irish Government, our strategic partners and brand-new partners to the project – which is changing lives for people with disability. We wish to publicly acknowledge the professional support of John Killian of Killian & Company for this new development and the co-operation of Roscommon and Longford County Councils.
Defibrillator Training
With a new defibrillator there is a great need for new people to get trained in the use of the defibrillator and to have people do their refresher courses. Knowledge in use of the defibrillator is extremely essential as we have seen locally in the recent past.
There will be a new course beginning in the near future and if you want to be included in the new course or refresher course you are invited to leave your name and phone number with Martina O’Brien in the shop or ring Martina at 086 3858934.
Support Rathcline Cemetery
As a result of no Cemetery Sunday there was no opportunity for the annual collection for the maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery. There is and has been great commendation for the manner in which cemetery is kept all year You are asked to place your contribution into an envelope and leave it into Joe or Martina at the corner shop.
Championship Time again
St. Faithleach’s in their quest to regain senior championship were drawn out on Sunday evening last to play Fuerty in the quarter final. At the time of writing there was no venue or time fixed for the match, so it is advisable to check Roscommon Herald, or Roscommon People to confirm details.
Rathcline seniors will continue their journey to qualify for the senior championship quarter finals when they play Mullinalaghta St. Columba’s on Friday night next at 8pm in Newtownforbes.
On Saturday the junior team who remain unbeaten will travel to the Laurels to play Mullinalaghta St. Columba’s in an effort to strengthen their qualifying position. The game has a throw-in time of 5pm
Lough Ree Golfing Society
The Society had their September outing at Tullamore Golf Club last Friday 17th September, and what a great day it turned out to be. The weather forecast was not good, one of the members phoned from Dublin to inform me it was teeming there! Everyone ventured off anyway, and the sun came out around Kilbeggan, and stayed shining. The golf enthusiasts were not put off by the bad forecast, and a good number turned out. The course was in excellent condition and the scores reflected this, with almost everyone present recording low to mid 30 scores. Jackie Mc Donnell came out on top with an excellent score of 42 pts, with Tony Patton and Paul Taylor tied on 36 pts and Tony winning on countback .Everybody expressed their satisfaction with the day, and that they did not allow the forecast put them off. The results were 1st Jackie McDonnell 42pts, 2nd Tony Patton 36 pts, and 3rd Paul Taylor 36pts. Nearest the Pin was Ronan Cullen and the Longest Drive went to Bernie Taylor. The final outing of 2021 will be at Strokestown GC in October.
Wedding
The marriage took place on Friday 10th September of Lynne O’Reilly, daughter of John James and Carmel O’Reilly, Knock and Carmel and Kevin Hunt son of George and Margaret Hunt, Longford. Chief bridesmaid was Alice O’Reilly sister of the bride while Bestman was John Hunt brother of thew groom. Flower girl was Holly Hunt daughter of the happy couple. The wedding reception was held in the very well-appointed St. Faithleach’s GAA clubhouse.
We wish the happy couple many years of wedded happiness.
Boat trips booking
With a great weather forecast for the coming week there is no doubt that the Access for All boat will again be one of the most popular boat trips on the Shannon. The Access for All boat is making trips three times a day Monday to Sunday – 10am, 12 noon and 2.30pm. It has become the success that it deserves to be with nothing but excellent comments from all those that have so far availed of the boat trip. The trips cater for both able bodied and those with disabilities. Bookings continue to be very high and early booking is advisable to ensure travelling at your chosen time and day.
This is an absolutely brilliant trip with a knowledgeable on-board staff that will make the 1½ hour trip feel like a very short time.

New Play
Keith Walsh son of Mick and Mary Walsh formerly of the Green has during the lockdown period used the time to write his debut play. The play entitled Pure Mental will go on nationwide tour over the next few months and no matter where you are reading this in Ireland there is sure to be a night out for you.
Keith, as you may already know has been on RTÉ radio and television over a number of years. As the promotion for the pay tells us that the show is his therapy, you are his therapist – Midlife Crisis? Midlife Awakening? Breakdown? This all leads to a very entertaining evening.
Join him, locally, in the Dean Crowe Theatre, Athlone on Thursday 25th November on a journey of introspection and exploration as he locates his demons and traumas in order to try and find the real person underneath the fuzzy mess of stress.
Traditional Night in the Pier
Traditional music sessions will return to the Pier Inn, Lisnacusha on this coming Friday night 24th September. Go along and enjoy the music and the craic. The session will be held on the last Friday of the month and it is no doubt the place to be on Friday night.
Tidy Towns Lottery
The weekly Lanesboro Tidy Towns lottery draw took place in the Tourism Office on Tuesday morning 14th September for a jackpot of €4,800.
The numbers drawn for this week were 6, 11, 20 and 27. There was no winner of the jackpot and the jackpot for Tuesday 21st September rose to €4,900.
The winner of the €50 consolation draw was won by M. Murray, 51 The Green, and the three €20 prizes were Pat Kilcline, Barnacor, Stella, c/o Mags and Tiernan Hanley, Corrigeen.
St. Faithleach’s Lottery
The numbers drawn in the St. Faithleach’s lottery on Tuesday 7th September were 9, 26, 29and 30. There was no winner of the jackpot of €12,000 and the jackpot of €12,000 still remains to be won. The three winners of the €40 prizes were Claire Kenny, Noel Moran Ballyleague and Bridie Hynes, Roscommon.
The next draw takes place on Tuesday 21st September.
Rathcline 50/50
The Rathcline club’s 50/50 draw took place on Monday night 13th September in the Yacht Bar. The name on the winning envelope drawn was L, L, & M O’Brien, Newbridge, Co. Kildare who won €150. The club would like to thank everyone for their generous support.

Clonbonny Cemetery
The Cemetery committee are at present setting up a go fund me page to allay costs for the upkeep of the Cemetery. Alternatively, donations can be left into Joe & Martina or Mags hair salon. Please put your donation into a signed envelope.
The committee would like to remind people that no dumping is allowed. You are requested to bring all plastic etc with you and to dispose of through household bins.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to James, Dominic and John Martin, their sister Anne Morgan on the sudden death on Saturday 11th September of Michael Martin, formerly Mount Cashel who died in London.
AGM
The AGM for Lanesborough Parish Hall will take place in the hall on Tuesday 5th October at 7pm. The hall will r open for bookings from Monday next 27th September.
The Parish Hall committee would like to thank the Longford Local Community Development Committee for monies received through the Community Enhancement Programme 2020 to help with the cost of replacing the heating boiler and other works carried out last year.
Tractor Run
A Tractor Run in aid of Ballymahon Day Care Centre takes place on Sunday 3rd October, starting from Centra Ballymahon. Meeting at 11am for registration. Cost per tractor is €20. Covid guidelines must be adhered to. Please support, the day care centre is a lifeline to a lot of people living in our parish and the surrounding parishes. Ballyboro
Club history was made on Saturday last when the club fielded its first ever adult team. The team emerged with credit on its first outing in the Combined Counties League. Halfway through the second half they were level 3-3 with last year’s league winners Ardagh/Moydow, courtesy of a Jordan Donlon hat trick. A red card for one of the players allied to injuries to key players did not help their cause and four late goals for Ardagh secured the points for them. The first ever Ballyboro adult team in action was Mark Tarmey, Ben Hussey, Daniel Foley, Dylan Donlon, Paddy Kenny, Greg Cassidy, Jack Murray, Alan Kenny, Ryan Guinan, Oran Wyse, Jordan Donlon. Subs: Shane Killian, Brian Gartland and Luke Lisle.
The under 12 team found the playing conditions difficult in their joust with Abbey Rovers. Though the team gave of their best a physically stronger Abbey team prevailed by nine goals to four. Team and scorers: Stephen Farrell, Hayden Smyth, Aleysha Kaya, Alfie Murphy (1), Josh Curran, Kyle Rice (1), Jack Cassidy (1), Alfie Brehon, Tim Kenny (1). Subs: Darragh Donlon, Ferat Pulcu, Miko Woloweic.
An understrength under 14 team who despite a number of fine individual displays, found an excellent Killoe Celtic team too hot to handle on Sunday last. Billy Murray and Lucas Moynihan (a subtle header) scored for Ballyboro. Team: Leon Malkowski, Eoin Beattie, Logan Birmingham, Eoghan Mullooly, Ethan Slattery, Dan Casey, Michael Fallon, Eoin Connell, Cody Phelan, Rian Shanley, Rian Hogan. Subs: Matthew Murray, Billy Murray, Lucas Moynihan, Harry Brogan and Emry.
The under 15 team went down 3-2 to Killoe Celtic. Playing a year out of their age group the team performed extremely well and with a little more composure in front of goal could have secured a draw at least. Team: Paulius Buloiene, Jack Brogan, David Cox (2), Anthony Cox, Jack Beattie, Billy Murray, Euan Cullen, Wesley Hughes, Luke Johnston, Ben Murphy, Conn Maxwell. Sub: Nathan McCloat.

St. Mary’s Church On Saturday evening next Mass at 7.30pm those from Fermoyle, Green Gardens, Gurteengar, Killinure and Knock Manor
At 9.30am Mass on Sunday it will be turn of Knock, Lehery, and Lismacmanus.
The 11.30am Mass will see parishioners from Lisduff, Lisnacusha, Lisrevagh, Mahoraveen, Main Street and Mount Davis.
Parish Grouping: This year Fr. Merlyn, Fr. Turlough and Fr. Sergiy will continue to work closely together and more so in the three parishes of Rathcline, Newtowncashel and Killashee. They will now share the Masses out, with the priests taking a turn in each parish at the weekend.
First Friday Calls Those who would like a priest to call with Communion on the First Friday of each month, are encouraged to contact one of the priests.
Return of Anniversaries: Following a parish pastoral council meeting it has been agreed that bookings for Sunday Mass anniversaries to resume. Family members who wish to attend are asked to take their place on the gallery or take up just one or two seats in the main body of the church. It is also hoped to introduce the Friday evening Mass as a shared Mass, to facilitate as many as possible.
Eucharistic Adoration on Tuesdays in the church from 10.30 to 8pm. It is very important that there will be at least two people in the church for each hour of the Adoration.
Mass intentions will continue to be booked for weekdays for the present. People wishing to book masses can do so by contacting Fr Sergiy before or after mass during the week in the Sacristy. All that have booked masses are asked to rebook them for weekdays for the foreseeable future.
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament has resumed on Friday evenings, starting this Friday evening and it will take place between 6pm and 6.45pm. Exposition will be followed Mass at 7pm. It is also an opportunity to avail of the opportunity for Confession.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club
Under 17’s Hard luck to all of our panel, on the match Thursday evening against Kenagh, and Sunday afternoons match against Drumlish.
The team management would like to thank all of the panel members, including the U15 panel members, who have shown a great dedication and a high work ethic, in attending our training sessions/matches, over the last year. All players have shown huge improvements in their skill levels and fitness. They had great respect for each other. We are extremely proud of them as a group and we admire their camaraderie and resilience. While we didn’t have many wins along the way, we hope that they enjoyed the journey.
The management would also like to give a huge thank you, to all of the parents for encouraging them to take part and also for their help with getting them to matches and training. Thank you also to those who helped at matches as Umpires/linesmen.
Thank you to all of our sponsors, some who were anonymous, who provided the finance, for new sets of socks/togs/jerseys, and also to EBarbers (Eugene Maguire) who sponsored the lovely club football tops for all of the squad. Our team looked really well in these.
A massive thank you goes to Sean Casey, who has shown 100% commitment to managing the team over the last 2 years. He has earned great respect and dedication from the players, in his approach to training and match play. This was evident from the constant high attendances at training sessions and matches.
Thank you to the Shannon Gael’s Executive Committee, without whose support, we would not be able to participate in these competitions.
Good Luck We wish the senior club the very best at the weekend in their senior championship on Friday night in Newtownforbes at 8pm and the Junior team on Saturday at 5pm in the Laurels. The opposition for both games will be Mullinalaghta.
U13’s Looking at the fixtures list on the Longford GAA website I see that our U13’s will be playing in their championship in Clonbonny on Saturday 3rd October at 2pm against Ballymahon Forgney Carrick Sarsfields
End of Season celebration The club agreed that on Saturday 2nd October as is the end of season custom there will be the parish league / fun day in Clonbonny for all underage players (further detail to follow & times to be confirmed once we get info on any other events / activities scheduled for that day). We would be hoping to run it off in the morning and then have refreshments for lunch and carry out some presentations before heading home.
