Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Defibrillator Training

There is a great need for new people to get trained in the use of the defibrillator and also to have people doing their refresher courses. Knowledge in use of the defibrillator is extremely essential as we have seen locally in the recent past.

There will be a new course beginning shortly and if you want to be included in the new course or refresher course you are invited to leave your name and phone number with Martina O’Brien in the shop or ring Martina at 086 3858934.

Engagement

Congratulations to Robert Corcoran, Carrowstrawley, son of Evelyn and the late Robert Corcoran and Claire Keane, eldest daughter of Gerry & Stephanie Keane, Lucan who recently announced their engagement.

Birth

Many congratulations to Melissa Fitzsimons and Paul Molloy, The Green, on the birth last week of a baby girl.

Annette calls it a day

After almost 14 years as Lollipop Lady crossing all the children going and coming to Lanesboro Primary School, Annette Coffey, nee Clancy, has decided to call time on this part of her life. Annette was a hugely popular lady with all the youngsters and their parents. She went far way and above her call of duty at the crossing. She was always watchful and alert with all the youngsters. Each and every youngster was treated with care and respect right from their very first day at school right up to her last crossing on Friday last. Her interest in all the youngsters did not end when she finished crossing them as she loved to hear the stories of their success as they progressed through life. Annette was a chatty and cheerful lady and had a word for everyone and she had a little bag of sweets for everyone come the starting of school holidays.

Annette will be sadly missed by everyone around the corner and mostly by all the present-day students in Lanesboro Primary School.

Draw for Two All-Ireland tickets

The whole country has gone crazy for tickets for this year’s All-Ireland football final. Not withstanding the fact that it is only half the capacity demand has been chaotic due to Mayo and Tyrone beating hot favourites Dublin and Kerry. The demand has been so great that even people as far away as Australia have been buying tickets. Get your ticket and be in with a chance to see what promises to be a riveting final.

The Rathcline club has two tickets for raffle on this Thursday night 9th September in Adie’s. Tickets priced €5 and are on sale in all local businesses.

Rathcline Cemetery

With Covid restrictions ensuring that there would again be no Cemetery Sunday Mass and remembrance to those family members deceased and buried in Rathcline cemetery. Therefore, there was no opportunity for the annual collection for the maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery. There is and has been great commendation for the manner in which cemetery is kept all year around. If you wish to contribute towards the maintenance, you can do so by placing your contribution into an envelope and leave it into Joe or Martina at the corner shop.

Contrasting Fortunes

Sunday was a day of contrasting fortunes for the footballers of St. Faithleach’s and Rathcline in their respective championships.

St. Faithleach’s got off to a blistering start against Kilmore which left them comfortable throughout and this victory practically ensure them of progress to the knockout stage off the championship. They will now play St. Dominic’s in the final group game in Ballyleague at 3pm on Sunday next.

A very young Rathcline team, on the other hand, in their opening championship game got off to a dreadful start where Granard opened up a big lead and despite the best efforts the lead could not be clawed back. Rathcline will play Abbeylara in the next round on Sunday next in Carrickedmond with a 1.30pm throw in.

Lough Ree Golfing Society

The monthly Lough Ree Golfing Society outing will take place on Friday week 17th September to Tullamore Golf club. If you are a golfer and would like to join the Society, please come along and enjoy the company of the current members. The tee is booked from 12.10pm.

Boat trips booking

With a great weather forecast for the coming week there is no doubt that the Access for All boat will again be one of the most popular boat trips on the Shannon. The Access for All boat is making trips three times a day Monday to Sunday – 10am, 12 noon and 2.30pm. It has become the success that it deserves to be with nothing but excellent comments from all those that have so far availed of the boat trip. The trips cater for both able bodied and those with disabilities. Bookings continue to be very high and early booking is advisable to ensure travelling at your chosen time and day.

All-Ireland Fever

Tension and excitement continued to build amongst the Mayo people in our community since Mayo beat Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-final in a thrilling game a few weeks back. With Tyrone facing into hot favourites Kerry, it seemed inconceivable that the final would be Mayo v Tyrone but that is the way it turned out. Tyrone like Mayo had to go to extra time to beat Kerry in an exhilarating game.

This is a first meeting of these two teams in an All-Ireland and it seems has the prospects of being another nail biting and tense occasion. The Tyrone flags have appeared during the weeks and added great colour.

We wish both teams the very best of luck for a wonderful game.

Seen outside Lewis and Martina Hanley’s house in Lehery – no doubt Martina was the instigator supporting her native Mayo.

Winter Walking

Every winter and spring when the rain arrives the walkway into the Commons North Walkway flooded hence there was no walking into the woods. Longford County Council recently started working on the raising of the roadway between the quarries and to the entrance of the North Commons Walk. The road is now above the highest flood level and makes the woods now fit for year-round walking. Well done to Longford County Council for a job well done and creating a further winter walking route in the community.

Rathcline 50/50

The Rathcline club’s 50/50 draw took place on Monday night 30th August in Adie’s Bar. The name on the winning envelope drawn was Stephen Maher c/o Clarke’s Bar who won €150. The club would like to thank everyone for their generous support.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club

Under 12’s victorious. After league victories over Wolfe Tones, Killoe and Clonbroney, Shannon Gaels U12s played Wolfe Tones in a Cup Final on Monday 30th August.

Wolfe Tones had home advantage and a large crowd was in attendance to cheer on both teams.

A brilliant all-round performance seen Shannon Gaels win by 7 points on a score line of 26-19.

There was great excitement as captain on the night Mikey Sorohan lifted the cup for a second successive season.

There was many stand out performers on the night, but it would be unfair to single out a few, as this was really a great team performance.

There was a squad of 27 present on the night which bodes well for the future.

The celebrations continued with a parade around Lanesboro which was followed by the traditional 99 in Joe O Brien’s, and a bag of chips from the Shannon Grill.

Many thanks to Joe O Brien, Anta and PJ for the food and ice creams.

The U12 season will now come to a close with training on Friday at 6.30

The U13 championship starts on Monday 6th September with an away trip to Colmcille and training will continue on Fridays at 6.30. U12 Panel: Emma Dowd, Evan Rooney, Dan Casey, Darragh Donlon, Hannah Farrell, Ciaran McGloin, John Farrell, Mikey Sorohan, Tim Kenny, Rian Hogan, Alfie Murphy, Oisin Dillon, Shane Farrell. Subs: Josh Curran, Stephen Farrell, Leah Kenny, Sean O Dowd, Jack Cassidy, Laura Rhatigan, Andrew O Sullivan, Emily McDermott, Lily Dowd, Saoirse Dillon, Erin Rumley, Eoghan Mullooly, Michael Hogan and Faye Hogan.

Great credit must go to the team management of Stephen Rooney, James Casey and Barry Hogan.

U13’s loses out Many of the Under 12 team were on duty the following evening when they played St. Dominic’s in Kenagh in the U13 Shield Final. Alas, it was not to be another night of celebrations when the lads lost out to a strong St. Dominic’s side. The lads gave their all and it was wonderful achievement in reaching the final. We know there will be many much happier and successful days on the pitch and evenings as Tuesday last will be long forgotten.
