Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
The late Daniel Greene
The entire area was shocked and saddened when the news broke on Wednesday last 10th February of the death in Perth, Australia of Daniel Greene. At the age of 27 Daniel was much too young to die. He was predeceased by his late father Pat back in 1993. Along with his mother Christine (nee Donlon) and family they moved to Australia some 15 years ago. For the past five years he has been battling cancer and he did so in his own inimitable way and with great spirit and dignity. During his time in Lanesboro Daniel grew into a fine young man who was very popular amongst his peer group and the older generation. The memory of Daniel is of a happy go lucky young man who always had a warm welcome, a beaming smile and a happy glint in his eye. From a very early age he had a wonderful way with people. Daniel is still fondly remembered here in our community and his death has been received with a very heavy heart and the deepest regret. Farewell young man it was a pleasure to know you.
At the time of writing no funeral arrangement have been made. We extend our deepest sympathy to his mother Christine, her partner Andy, his sister Channon, Daniel’s partner Beth, grandmother Patsy Donlon, Moher, the Donlon and Greene families and many friends in Ireland and Australia.
5ive Global
In recent months Vincent English created 5iveGlobal based in Edgeworthstown. Vincent with 5iveGlobal has created Longford International College which tutors in courses in business, sports and law, from diploma to doctoral degree level. Already the college has gained great recognition for courses and availability online.
A tremendous recognition of the very special work already being done by Longford International College comes in their nomination for the Irish National Awards that was held on Thursday night last. Although they did not win the National Award their nomination alone shows their work is gaining national and international recognition.
We congratulate Vincent on his nomination, and we are sorry that he was not the overall winner – but his nomination ensured his 5iveGlobal is a winner.
Regatta Committee
Back in the 60’s Lanesboro was renowned for its Regatta and swimming competitions. Such was the status of the swimming competitions National swimming and European champions Chalky White and Donncha O’Dea frequently visited to take part in the events.
I got a phone call the other day enquiring if I knew of any of the committees of the time. I did not but I said I would ask through the notes.
If you have any memorabilia or notes of the committees of that time as to who the committees were, I would appreciate a copy to pass on. Many thanks in advance.
Clonbonny Cemetery
I have been asked to let you know that there is no longer a pickup of grave clearings at Clonbonny Cemetery. It would be deeply appreciated if those that in recent time left clearings off family graves in the corner to collect it and dispose of it. The committee works hard at keeping the cemetery in tip top shape. The stone facing of the cemetery wall and the gates have made a huge difference in the presentation of the cemetery.
