Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Wild at Heart

Prompted by Niall Mulvihill to read the travel section of last week’s Sunday Times I came across the Wild at Heart section that included ‘the 25 bathing spot we love’ written by Heather Snelgar where she listed the best 25 spots in Ireland for a bracing dip.

When I got to number 13, I was delighted to see that Heather had included Lanesboro and especially the bay area.

I quote an extract from Heather’s piece “One of our favourites is at Lanesborough. Access is easiest from the harbour, where pontoons have been erected thanks to a Tidy Towns project. The area has a thriving open-water swimming scene, so it is likely you won’t be alone taking the plunge here at any time of the year”

Heather also referenced the green area beside the swimming area and suggested it was the right place to for a post-dip picnic and also recommended to pack a flash of something steamy to banish chattering teeth.

It is always great for us to be getting notice from outside media and more so when we are being seen as being in the top 25 in the country. It just goes to show that all the developments been done to improve our community is paying off. Everyone must be congratulated for their dedication to the improvement of our community.

Death

It is with profound sadness I record the death at his residence on Monday 2nd November of John Gallagher, The Green. He came to Lanesboro with his parents, brothers and sisters many years ago from Co. Donegal. He was one of the last remaining original residents on the Green and his death sees a further demise of original residents. In his younger days John was a well-travelled man before settling back to live on the Green. He was instantly recognisable in town as when he strolled downtown, he always was to be seen with his much-loved pipe. He was a very quiet and dignified man. John was a very intelligent man and from many conversations with him you became abundantly aware of that fact. He had a very distinctive welcoming greeting where he always mentioned your name when saying hello. The greeting always felt warm and sincere as you knew he was.

John’s remains reposed at his brother Manus’s home in Barnacor on Wednesday from where his removal took place to St. Mary’s Church on Thursday for his Funeral Mass. Following Mass, John was laid to rest in Clonbonny cemetery. To his brothers Manus, Larry, and Barney, sisters Bridie and Margaret relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Mattie McGuire, Clonfower his sisters Ellen, Anne, Mary and Imelda on the death of their brother Michael in Birmingham on Sunday 25th October. Michael is also survived by his wife Olive and children John, Matthew, Annette and Clare to whom we extend or deepest sympathy.

Annual Mass

The annual Green residents Mass that incorporates Cloontuskert and Derryhaun estates along with remembering all former deceased employees of Bord na Mona will take place on Wednesday 18th November in St. Mary’s Church at 10am.

With Covid restrictions being in place there can be nobody in attendance, but the mass will be streamed live on Facebook. Put St. Mary’s Parish Lanesboro into your Facebook search and you can participate in the Mass.

Unfortunately, we cannot have the usual after Mass gathering in the hall but we look forward to a brighter 2021 when we can all congregate and meet old friends for a chat over a cup of tea after Mass.

Remembrance Tree

Lanesboro Community College have prepared a Tree of Remembrance in St. Mary’s Church which recalls all the who have died in the Parish in the last year. The tree will remain in the church for the month of November.

Sympathy

We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to the family, wife Eileen, and sons Luke and Finbar and their extended family on the death of the late Kevin Gibbons, Crossmaglen, Co. Armagh, formerly Clonfower who passed away on Tuesday 3rd November. Kevin was predeceased by his brother Noelie and Tommy, and sisters Katty and Eva.

Roscommon Biography

The Dictionary of Roscommon Biography has proved to be a wonderful book creating a great interest with its astonishing detail. This is a must for Roscommon people and also those of us that know many families in the county. There is a remarkable fact unknown to me and others I spoke to of Ger Farrell (Adie’s father), and his brother included. It is a book once you open it you will find it difficult to leave down as the information just keeps jumping off the pages at you. This huge volume priced at only €30 can be purchased in O’Brien’s while stocks last.

The numbers drawn in the Lanesboro Tidy Towns Lotto on Tuesday 3rd November were 8, 17, 26 and 28. There was nobody with the four numbers and the jackpot for the draw on Tuesday 10th November stood at €2,500. The main consolation prize of €50 went to Bernie Malone, Cloontuskert and the three other €20 prizes went to Bernie Hanley, Corrigeen, Declan, James and Luke Curran, Carraroe and Tiernan Hanley, Corrigeen.

Sympathy

It was with great sadness we learned of the death on Saturday 7th November of former lessee of the Peer Inn/Rakish Paddy, Lisnacusha, Tom Rowan.
