Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
Wedding
The marriage took place on Saturday last 26th September in the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, Keadue, Co. Roscommon of Thomas Reynolds son of Ita and the late Brendan Reynolds, Cloontuskert and Nicola Prentice, daughter of Tam and Elizabeth Prentice, Hamilton, Scotland. Bestman was Peter Reynolds brother of the groom while chief bridesmaid was Stephanie Harvie friend of the bride. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Kevin Reynolds, uncle of the groom. The wedding reception was held in Kilronan Castle Hotel.
We would like to wish the happy couple many years of wedded happiness.
Return of ESB and Bord na Mona
A few weeks ago, I mentioned that there was a rattle and hum coming from Bord na Mona once again. The outcome of that was the delivery of peat from the bog for taking away to other points but for the next three months the collection of the peat will be going once again to the power station. I am led to believe that from Wednesday next 1st October it will be all systems go as the power station is fired up once again to burn the peat.
I believe that the power station will run from Wednesday until 31st December burning off all the peat on the bog. From then on what was so wonderful for generations of families will be no more and we will be left with the memories. Over the next three months we have the final opportunity to see the last of the smoke coming from the chimney stack and to see and hear the rattle of the locos as they draw peat to the power station.
Tractor/Vintage car/Classic Bike Run
As the Covid-19 pandemic shows no sign of relenting the annual Lanesboro Tidy Towns Breakfast Morning has had to be cancelled. In an effort to raise funds whilst staying within the guidelines the Lanesboro Tidy Towns committee have come up with a three-pronged event on Sunday 25th October. There will be a Tractor Run, a Vintage Car Run and Classic Bike Run. The Tractors will assemble at St. Faithleach’s GAA grounds and start from there while the Vintage Cars and Classic Bikes will gather at Lanesboro Car Park and commence their route from there.
You are asked to donate some sponsorship to a participating tractor, vintage car or classic bike to help fund the Tidy Towns committee as they continue their excellent work in the area. I doubt if there is not a group in the community that the Co-Op/Tidy Towns have not helped out at one stage or another and this is a great opportunity to help back by supporting them in this tractor, vintage car and classic bike run.
Death
On Thursday last 24th September we learned of the death in the care of Sunset Lodge, St. Joseph’s Care Centre, Longford town of Aivars Lazda, Radharc na Muileann. Aivars moved to Ireland from his native Latvia. On his arrival in Lanesboro he worked with Michael Casey, Newtowncashel. In recent years he fell into ill health which he battled with all his might. He was a soft spoken, quiet and private person. He would always be seen having his walk down the town. Those that knew him speak of a lovely and warm man, ever obliging a real gentleman.
Aivars will be sadly missed by his son Arturs, sister Ivetta, friends and fellow compatriots to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.
Our Greenway
For those interested in the distance of our new greenway, the distance from the outer barrier to the end and back to the barrier is a distance of 4.28Km or 2.67miles.
The bridge over the stream is for pedestrians and cyclists only.
For those bringing their dogs on the greenway they are asked to bring dog poop bags as already there is dog poop appearing on the walkway. We must bear in mind that there are children walking and being pushed in buggies along the greenway and it is very important that it is remains clean always.
Sponsored Wheelchair Push/Walk
Maurice Donlon is undertaking a sponsored wheelchair push/walk at Corlea Trackway Kenagh in aid of the Longford Branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association. The walk/push will take place on Thursday 8th October. Sponsorship cards are in O’Brien’s and other local businesses. Your support will be greatly appreciated.
Shannon Country
Richard Hayward in the middle of the last century was a travel writer, singer, actor, who was well-known the length and breadth of the country. He wrote Where the River Shannon Flows having traced the river from its origins on the Cavan Fermanagh border and published it in 1939.
Paul Clements, a native of Belfast is a fellow travel writer to Hayward. Paul is a prolific writer and his latest book Shannon Country has him retracing Hayward’s journey from the source of the Shannon to the Shannon estuary. He has travelled the entire length of the 344km river by car, boat, bike and on foot. His trip along the river gives us a real feel of all the communities and the impact the river has on their communities and how some of these communities use the river to their benefit.
Along the route he paints a remarkable vision of the river and its communities. In Lanesboro he spends some good time in the company of Dan Kavanagh and Seadna Ryan where he learned a lot about our area and community.
The book is an excellent read and already it is proving to be a very popular read. It can be bought in O’Brien’s at the cost of €15.
Tidy Towns Regret
As 2020 will be always remembered as the year that all events and practically all occasions came to a sudden halt. Following the success of Lanesboro, Ballyleague and Cloontuskert in last year’s Tidy Towns competition there was great hope and expectation for a vast improvement in points this year.
When you look at the work of the three Tidy Town committees that continued unabated this year and supported by all businesses making a conscious effort to improve their street fronts our three Tidy Towns entrants never looked better. This summer the boating community was all Irish and it is was especially pleasing to hear so many comments from those on the river as to how beautiful our community looks.
A word of thanks must go to the three committees for their continued great work and we look forward to everybody rowing in together to continue this great work and in 2021 all the work will be rewarded with exceptional points which in my mind will be well deserved.
Roscommon Biography
The recently launched Dictionary of Roscommon Biography is continuing to sell well and it has almost sold its first full print. It is a book that is full of amazing detail and those from the county and those of us along the Roscommon border it holds a fascinating interest. It is a book once you open it you will find it difficult to leave down. This huge volume priced at only €30 can be purchased in O’Brien’s while stocks last.
