Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Monday 31st August 2020

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Ebarbers

Since Eugene Maguire moved his barber’s business down into the middle of the Main Street, I have not heard so much comment in our shop as to how well the shop front and the     barbering inside looks and what it adds to our Main Street. It does indeed look brilliant and it was just what the Main Street needed another shop front with an active business and thankfully it is proving to be a thriving business for Eugene.

Roscommon Biography

The fascinating A Dictionary of Roscommon Biography is selling remarkably well so much so that the book has almost sold its entire first issue. With numbers quickly running out it is very important that you pick up your copy of this huge volume. For just €30 you are receiving a hugely interesting and invaluable book steeped with an amazing amount of detail and interest for us all.

High Shannon

The rain of the past few weeks has raised great concern with all the farmers and especially those living along the banks of the Shannon. I am reliably informed that the water height on the Shannon is at winter level which is of a great concern. It has not been seen at this       height in living memory at this early stage of the year. Water management must come into play very soon to lower the water height. Because of its height there is a great concern that if nothing is done to release the water then the winter rainfall will well and truly flood lands greater than ever before and put homes in danger. At present all we can do is hope for a sustained dry spell or the powers that be let a greater amount of water to go and alleviate the pressure here and all along the    Shannon.

Bog Walk

All during the summer the work on the new greenway across the bog has been held up by the incessant rain so much so that the workers working there were redeployed to other areas and all machinery had been moved away. I am delighted to say that the work has recommenced and with favourable weather conditions they should have completed the spreading of the 804 chippings inside the next week or two. With this stretch rolled it will be suitable for walkers but not yet for cyclists. It will be great to be able to walk the journey from Kilnacarrow over to Cloonbearla before the evenings close in.

This walkway was due to be completed by May last but with the closing of the power station creating an upheaval in Bord na Mona the projected date had to be scrapped. During that time, we had the best weather conditions of the year and when the workers returned, we go too much rain and not long enough of a drying spell to dry out the bog to allow the workers return.

I am led to believe that the black top and quarry dust will not be put on until a later date which is fine as long as we can have a walk throughout daylight hours of the winter.

Having visited it the other day it is amazing to see how the bog is returning to nature such is the growth. The walk looks fabulous and I can only imagine its beauty in a few years of     natural growth on the bog.

Into the Semi – Final

St. Faithleach’s had an excellent win over Shannon Gaels in the quarter final of the     championship in Hyde Park on Sunday last.  It was a game that Faithleach’s took a firm grip   of early and never loosened their grip for the duration of the game and ran out comfortable winners.

The semi-final will be played next weekend in Hyde Park, I believe, where they will take on St. Dominick’s. At the time of writing there is no day nor time.

We wish the panel and management the very best of luck and look forward to a championship final date.

Rathcline GAA

Into League Semi

Irrespective of the result on Sunday last the senior team were into the League semi-final. That fact did not alter the winning mindset that the team had built up and after an extremely high scoring game they emerged comfortable winner and maintained their position at the top of their group. They now await the runner up from the other group to see who their semi-final   opponents will be. That game will not take place for a few weeks.

Support for New Development

Rathcline GAA Senior, Minor and Ladies clubs are preparing to start Phase 3 of its development plan at its club grounds in Clonbonny, Lanesborough, Co Longford, to be completed by October 2020. The club is experiencing a great period of growth with increasing numbers in our underage grades from nursery (under 6s) to minor grade (u18s), a vibrant ladies club at underage and senior level and the emergence of a very talented senior football team. The clubs continue to be the heartbeat of our community bringing our parish together to enjoy GAA activities.

In 2019, the Rathcline GAA Pitch Development committee was appointed and quickly set about an ambitious 5-year development plan for the club’s facilities. Please view our Pitch Development video to show the work completed to date and our ambitious plans for 2020. https://youtu.be/YCmwgJKkn9I

During 2019, the committee organised a very successful sponsored cycle “Saddle Up for Rathcline” to purchase and install an electronic scoreboard in Clonbonny.

The next phase of development involves the development of additional 1.5 acres of club owned lands into a playing/training area for our underage players, both male and female. This area is located across the road from the entrance to the grounds.

This project involves the landscaping and drainage of this currently unused area, erection of a Skills/Sports Wall for children to practice their skills and perimeter fencing on the site. The project also involves the erection of floodlighting and drainage on the existing club practice pitch which is used by all playing members. This area will be focus of our facilities to develop the young talent in the club from ages 6 to 18 years of age. The installation of a Skills/Sports Wall is a critical element of this development. This video gives an introduction to how this Skills/Sports Wall will help to develop our young talent.  https://youtu.be/7q1pdP-QV-0

To help fund this project, the club’s pitch development committee is organizing a sponsored cycle along the Royal Canal Greenway on Saturday 12th September. This year’s cycle will mark the opening of a new cycle route which links Lanesborough to the Royal Canal Greenway at Killashee, making it possible to cycle from Lanesborough to Dublin on this Greenway, passing by the gates of Clonbonny GAA grounds.
We would be very grateful if you could consider a donation to this project which will help the club to develop improved playing/training/coaching facilities for our growing numbers of underage players. We aim to complete this Phase of the Development by October 2020. We have set up a GoFundMe page for our project fundraiser.     https://www.gofundme.com/f/rathcline-gaa
