The Leaving of Fr. Mickey
On the weekend on Saturday and Sunday 8th and 9th September 2007 Fr. Mickey Reilly said his first Masses in his new parish of Rathcline. Almost 13 years later on Thursday last 13th August Fr. Mickey bowed out of the parish by celebrating the Confirmation ceremony with the young people of Fermoyle N.S. The 13 years have flown by and he will be long remembered in our parish for the vibrancy and earnestness he brought to the liturgical service. People came from all points of the compass for his mass. He was an amazing priest and comforter to everyone in their time of need. He was a priest known never to be intrusive but a most dependable and reliable priest when anyone was in need or seeking advice or support. It cannot be stated enough how much the people of the area will miss Fr. Mickey. Prior to coming to Lanesboro Fr. Mickey was always seen as a star of the football pitches and was most noted for being on the Leinster Winning Longford Senior Football team. What we did not realise was Fr. Mickey was a real star in his ecclesiastical mission and for the past 13 years it was indeed an honour and privilege to have him as our parish priest.
We would like to thank Fr. Mickey for all the invaluable and caring work he has done in our parish and we only hope that he has enjoyed his time amongst us as much as we have enjoyed him being with us.
We would like to wish him great health and enormous happiness in the new role he has chosen and for the people of Rathcline he will never be forgotten and always fondly remembered.
Business Community Survey
Longford Enterprise Office are calling on all businesses in Lanesboro and Ballyleague to take part in a Community Survey. You are been encouraged to complete the survey before Friday 28th August. This survey will assist in shaping the forthcoming Economic and Enterprise Development Strategy for Lanesboro and Ballyleague.
Future Analytics Consultants has been appointed by Longford and Roscommon County Councils to prepare an Economic and Enterprise Development Strategy. The Strategy will develop and deliver effective short, medium- and long-term path to enterprise and job creation in the area, building on existing and planned investment and innovation initiatives.

Vacancy
The Church View estate has an immediate vacancy for a Rural Social Scheme worker.
To qualify the person will need to have or have the use of a Herd Number and be in receipt of a social protection payment, i.e. job seekers allowance or farm assist. The hers Number can be in the parents or sibling’s name.
The vacancy will involve maintaining the estate, cutting and trimming grass, litter control, weeding and caring for plant beds etc.
The hours will be 19.5 per week or similar arrangement. Full stamp will be provided.

New Book Launched
Mike Lennon who along with Henry Owen compiled, edited and brought us that fabulous local history book ‘Sliabh Bán’ a few years ago has again produced another cracking book, this time, in the shape of ‘A Dictionary of Roscommon Biography’. This is a book that is so captivating it cannot be left down. From down the years there are many local people from the Kilgefin parish named and many of their families are still living in the community another factor drawing you to the book.
The book keeps drawing you back to it and each time you go back you will surely find more and more interesting pieces of knowledge on one person or another. One of the local nuggets of information I found, just before writing this piece, was the entry for Gerald (Ger) (O’) Farrell, father of Adie’s and Ger’s brother Peter (O’) Farrell. This book is laced with many interesting and enticing entries.
This is a very substantial hard backed book is a must buy book. The volume is available locally in O’Brien’s at a price of €30.
Towns Lotto
The numbers drawn in the Lanesboro Tidy Towns Lotto on Tuesday 4th August were 5, 23 and 29. There was nobody with these four numbers and the jackpot for the draw on Tuesday 11th August stood at €8,400. The consolation prize of €50 went to F& E Clyne, Corrigeen and the three €20 prizes went to Hughie Smyth, Main St., Marie Cleary, Gardenstown and Mark Casey, c/o Mags.

Mixed Fortunes
On the GAA fields last weekend there was mixed fortunes for our local teams. On Saturday evening at the St. Faithleach’s pitch the St. Faithleach’s team had a top of the table clash with Creggs. This was a challenge that the men of St. Faithleach’s relished and emerged convincing winner. On Saturday evening in Ballymahon the very young and inexperienced Rathcline team faced the mammoth task of securing a victory over Mullinalaghta and in the end the task proved just beyond them having been with them score for score for long stages of the game.
Rathcline have one final game left in their group and that comes on Friday evening in Drumlish where they will take on Colmcille in a must win game while St. Faithleach’s have the weekend of competitive football as they prepare for their quarter final.
Lanesboro Ballyleague Credit Union
Lanesboro Ballyleague Credit Union business has returned to pre-Corona Virus working and opening hours: Tuesday and Wednesday 9.30am to 3.00pm; Thursday 9.30am to 2.30pm and 3.45pm to 5.30pm. Friday 9.30am to 2.30pm and 3.45pm to 7.00pm and Saturday 9.30am to 1.00pm
Rathcline Lotto
The lockdown on the Rathcline weekly 50/50 draw has been lifted and the lotto makes a welcome return this week. Tickets are now back in local shops and a new app will be launched to ensure that anyone home or away that want to support the club by taking part in the draw each week can now readily do so.
Rathcline Cemetery
As there was no Mass at Rathcline Cemetery to celebrate the life of the people buried there the annual collection was not taken up. If you would like to donate to the upkeep of the graveyard you can do so by dropping your contribution in and envelope into the box in O’Brien’s Shop.

Astro Pitch Open
Ballyboro FC wish to announce that the club’s state of the art astro pitch has reopened. There are slots available for mid-week and the weekend 5 a side.
The pitch can only be booked online through the www.bookapitch.com website and as part of the new protocol the person who makes the booking online is fulfilling the role of Covid 19 compliance officer for the time they are on the pitch.
Players attending at the astro must not car-pool unless they are from the same household and all players contact details must be retained for one month. All players must arrive togged our and carry their own individual water bottle. All players must use the sanitiser supplied at the pitch.
The above guidelines are consistent with the Return to Training Protocols laid down by the Health Authorities and the FAI. If anyone has any queries please don’t hesitate to email: ballyboroastropitchcommittee@gmail.com
Ballyboro
The under 14 and under 13 teams participated in The Melview Invitational Seven a Side Under 14 Tournament last Saturday. The under 14s reached the Cup final where a last-minute goal for their opponents Newtown, decided the issue. The game finished 3-2 with Joey Trimble and Eoin Cox the Ballyboro goalscorers The Ballyboro boys performed very well in the six games they played and can be well pleased with their efforts. Playing a year out of their age group the under 13s found the going tough in their six games. They contested the Shield final and played some good football before going down to a strong Melview team on a 3-1 scoreline. Wesley Hughes found the net for Ballyboro. Rathcline GAA
Lotto Results: The first draw of the 50/50 since the lockdown took place on Monday night 10th August in Adie’s bar. The jackpot pool stood at €220 and the winning ticket was in the joint names of Carol Cooney and Adrian Fallon c/o Adie’s.
The 50/50 draw on Monday 17th August took place in the Yacht Bar.
The club apricates the support of everyone that bought tickets for the first draw and we look forward to greater support driving the 50/50 pool to record heights.
Looking forward: Our second round of the championship against Colmcille will take place in Monaduff, Drumlish on Friday night next at 8.00pm.
This is a very quick turn around from the Mullinalaghta game on Saturday last in Ballymahon, but we are greatly confident that the panel will do their recovery well and produce a sterling performance and record a famous victory. We wish the panel and team management the very best of luck.
As we are still under the Covid 19 restriction regarding match attendance it is very important that anyone wanting to go and support the team should contact club chairman Micheál O’Sullivan or club secretary Jimmy Flood to obtain their tickets.
Thank You: At a time when it was difficult to lift spirits it was great to see so many turning out to steward and assist in parking for the Intermediate championship game between Killashee and Kenagh in Clonbonny on Sunday evening last. Your support in ensuring that everything went very smoothly was very much appreciated.
The club would like to thank everyone that supported the 50/50 draw at the match, where lots of tickets were sold. Your support is greatly appreciated. The club thanks Mary T McGrath and Derville Flood for selling the tickets.
Your support will be called again for stewarding and parking on Saturday evening 22nd August next when Cashel will play Ardagh/Moydow in a winner takes all final round of the Intermediate Championship at 7pm. All stewards are asked to be at the club grounds no later than 5.30pm.
Saddle Up for Rathcline: As promised we can reveal on September 12th at 8.00am the first leg of Saddle Up will commence from Clonbonny Pitch.
This year’s cycle challenge comprises 8 legs with an average of 20km each with more detail to follow on routes and change over points
A reminder all funds raised in 2020 are assisting with the development & opening of a new training & playing area for our underage members
