Bord na Mona Workers Retraining & Employment Project
The Lough Ree Angling hub have submitted their Access for All Outdoor Recreation project application for funding to the Just Transition fund. Up to 40 fulltime, part time and season jobs are included in the plan.
As promised when the team behind the project last met the Bord na Mona workers club, we are arranging another briefing from the project leader Alan Broderick on the jobs plan and advice from the Department of Social Welfare on how the training planned and job opportunities coming up- full-time and part-time will effect each person individually – if they have already retired and are on job-seekers allowance etc so this coming Wednesday July 29th will meet again.
Two people from the DSP will be in attendance in Lanesborough to give advice on schemes and entitlements available through Intreo.
Additionally, an Employer Engagement Officer will also be in attendance. There will be an opportunity for confidential briefings after the public ones.
Admission to these sessions on Wednesday will be by ticket only as, for social distancing purposes, we must follow all Covid 19 regulations.
To book your place call Piarais and Dylan at 04333 21734 or email loughreeaccessforall@gmail.com .
Thank you to Longford DSP and the Bord na Mona workers who have helped us arrange these briefings – which will basically let people work out how many days they can work (or train) without affecting their entitlements . Please spread the word to all former and present Bord na Mona workers.
Opportunity
A chat with a friend of mine led me to thinking that there is an opportunity for many people in the community and the greater community area. A year or two ago he did up a cottage on the family homestead. After the work was completed, he decides to rent it out as a holiday home. This house was a little of the beating track and it did not have what we have in terms of the River Shannon and its amenities. He told me that, at this stage, the house has been and is now booked up right to the end of September.
Our chat naturally reverted back to the Lanesboro/Ballyleague and the greater community area and what could be available. In his own words “ I am sure within a radius of 3 mile from here there are a good number of houses not lived in or in need of a bit of renovation that could be done up and rented out like mine”.
It took me back to the meeting I had organised with Failte Ireland just prior to the lockdown and will take place once all restrictions have been lifted. This gathering is for everyone that is interested in hearing about the requirements for a B&B, house rental self-catering accommodation, guest houses and now that our two former hotels are in private hands it for the property owners. Like no time ever this is an opportunity not to be missed by those that have properties such as mentioned above.
Since the partial lifting of the restrictions we have had a huge number of Irish tourists on the river with a great number of them expressing their surprise at what we have in our community and its beauty. They are showing a great interest in our community and it would be a great shame if they decide to return next year or in following years that we will not have accommodation for them.
With so many people and companies having learned that working from home and remote working is now a reality there is a great opportunity for us to attract people to live in our community while working from home.
Just Friday last a former resident and regular visitor to Lanesboro was chatting with me and was saying that he would love to move back to Lanesboro especially now that remote working is a reality. Wouldn’t we love to have him, his wife and children living amongst us as we would with so many more families.
These chats brought me back to the ‘think tank’ and some remarkable inputs of so many people about developing our attracting community that for so many decades have welcomed people from all over to our community.
I hope these few words might sow a seed and encourage people not to miss what I think will be a golden opportunity.

As there was no Mass at Rathcline Cemetery to celebrate the life of the people buried there the annual collection was not taken up. If you would like to donate to the upkeep of the graveyard you can do so by dropping your contribution in and envelope into the box in O’Brien’s Shop.
Winning Weekend
Last weekend St. Faithleach’s championship campaign got off to a terrific start when they had a convincing victory over St. Aidan’s on Sunday. The previous night in Ballybrien Rathcline began their league campaign with an equally convincing game.

We wish both team and their managements the very best of luck and we are hoping for a winning weekend all-round
