Fantastic Achievement

Roscommon county is a big county, the 11th biggest in Ireland stretching from the bridge in Shannonbridge at its most southerly point to Arigna at its most northerly and from the bridge in Ballyleague in the east to Cloonfad at its most westerly point. Within the county Roscommon has 32 GAA clubs.

On Saturday last Fintan Mc Cormack, Gortgallon son of Pat and Rita undertook to cycle to each and every club in the county. It was a huge undertaking considering that the total time in the saddle was to be almost 17 hours to cover the 355km. Fintan started out early on Saturday morning at his home club St. Faithleach’s and completed at the home of Roscommon Gaels in Lisnamult.

Fintan did this cycle raising money for the Simon Community and if you have not donated you can still do so.

Congratulations Fintan on a fabulous feat.

Date deferred but we are looking forward

Last week were all expecting the announcement that pubs would reopen hence the last of the remaining four closed business in town to be allowed open. Unfortunately, when the announcement came it was that the pubs would remain closed. This is a terrible blow for the four pubs in town although I am led to believe that the only bar to sell food, Adie’s, will reopen on Wednesday. The other three bars Joe’s, Clarke’s and Rosie’s will now have to remain closed until 10th August despite have undertaken major work in preparation for the reopening last week. It is really a shame to see the doors of these businesses closed as they are the only closed doors in the town.

Last Sunday being the warmest day for a time attracted huge numbers to the town and especially the banks of the Shannon. People came from all parts of both counties enhancing a big number of Irish people that are taking advantage of the encouragement of a staycation and taking a boating holiday on the Shannon. It is a great pleasure to see so many boats on the river considering only a few weeks ago we were in despair that there would be little to no boating and tourist activity on the Shannon.

One advantage of the lockdown, dare I say, is the discovery of the local amenities and walkways and the attraction of the River Shannon. Tourists and locals alike have been using the amenities and seen emerging from the trails and enthusing greatly about what we have in our community.

It is a great shame that the bad weather over the past six weeks limited and eventually stopped the work on the new greenway. Hopefully, when the weather allows the machines to go back on the bog the tourists and out of towners returning in the future will be able to join our locals walking and cycling the new greenway.

Death

The news broke last weekend of the death at Laurel Lodge Nursing Home on Friday 17th July of Bill Keane, Triala Dillon, Curraghroe. Bill was predeceased by his wife Peggy, son Benny and his daughter Mary. Bill was a man of great character and the opportunity to chat with was always very welcome and enlightening. Bill was in his 99th year and had received remarkably great health until the recent few months. He had a wonderful interest in his parish and the happenings therein. For many years he was to be seen on his beloved Honda 50 travelling to town and elsewhere. Bill had great passion for the game of bingo and wherever there was a game you would find Bill. He loved the comradeship of the bingo goers and the chat about the different area of the greater community. Bill will be sadly missed by everyone that knew him and his passing will leave a great emptiness in the Curraghroe area and wider afield.

His Funeral Mass took place in St. Cecelia’s Church, Curraghroe on Sunday last which was followed by burial to Cloontuskert Cemetery.

To his son Dermot, son-in-law Dave, granddaughters Sarah, Melissa and Laura, relatives, friends and neighbours we extend our sincere sympathy.

Thank You

A special word of thanks must go to all that tended their family graves over the past number of weeks. It is an unusual time for everyone as the Corona Virus had guaranteed that the customary celebration of family and friends in our three cemeteries would not take place in its usual manner this year.
