Lanesboro receives €468,750 for Regeneration
Gerard Farrell on the final day as Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council was the bearer of great news for Lanesboro when he announced that €468,750 was awarded to Lanesboro by Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring as part of the Regeneration scheme. Longford County Council had submitted a number of projects for funding, some of these projects were the bringing to the next stage of an amphitheatre project, a visitor centre and a link road within the town.
We have been having a rough time with the imminent closure of ESB and Bord na Mona which will be a major blow to our community and surrounding areas. The community have been fighting back on a number of fronts and this funding is hugely welcomed and will help to further enhance our community and make us an area that people will feel is really worth visiting. We are working hard to ensure that we will not be left behind when the end of this year comes to an end as this is the closing time for the ESB power station and Bord na Mona in our community.
There are a good number of reasons to be optimistic, in times past those reasons proved to be false dawns, and we are now very confident that it will not be the case this time. There are many great people within the Lanesboro Ballyleague community and outside doing unbelievable work and this work is with the support of both Longford and Roscommon county councils.
Finally, I would like to say thank you and wish now former Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring, the very best as with the new Government formation he is no longer Minister with that portfolio. Michael has allocated three traunches of funding to Lanesboro since his appointment in 2017. The other funding announcements were for the new greenway across the bog linking Lanesboro to the parish of Killashee and also a greenway link to Clondra. Work on this is well on this greenway and nearing completion. The rain of the past week and weekend will stop work until the bog dries out again. We are excitedly looking forward to its completion as many people are already walking the bog and there is great amazement of the beauty that surround you when you go onto the walkway.

Longford County Council Regeneration Department are currently developing proposals for rural working hubs across the county and want to hear your opinion. We want as many commuters as possible to take part and help define future remote working facilities in County Longford.

Death
It was with a great sadness we learned of the death on Tuesday 23rd June after a short illness of Christine Cronin, 1 Ballyglass at University College Hospital Roscommon. Dinah as she was more commonly known locally came to live in Ballyglass some 20 years. A native of Crumlin, Dublin she lived a quite life. She was a warm and friendly lady who liked to live a quite life. Dinah was an excellent neighbour and her passing will leave a great emptiness in the quiet enclave of Ballyglass and especially so with neighbour and best friends Tom and Linda Gill.
Dinah’s remains reposed in Connell’s Funeral Home, Longford, on Wednesday and Thursday. Her remains also reposed at the home of her sister Theresa’s residence in Dublin on Thursday and Friday 26th. Cremation took place on Friday in Mount Jerome Crematorium.
We extend our deepest sympathy to her son Kevin, daughter Katrina, brother Kevin, sisters Ellen, Bridget and Theresa, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Cemetery Sunday
The commencement of Masses for the celebration of Cemetery Sunday will be celebrated privately commencing on Sunday next 5th July with mass for the deceased interred in Rathcline Cemetery. Mass will be celebrated on Sunday 12th July for those interred in Lanesboro Cemetery followed by Mass on Sunday 19th for those interred in Clonbonny Cemetery.
Championship Draw
Sunday last the draw for the Peter Hanley sponsored Longford Senior Championship took place live on Shannonside Radio. Rathcline were drawn in a very tough group1 where they have Colmcille and Mullinalaghta St. Columba’s. The top two will qualify for an open draw quarter final and we look forward to seeing a young and talented Rathcline team in the knockout stages.
Cloontuskert Cemetery Sunday
Cemetery Sunday will be celebrated in Cloontuskert Cemetery on Sunday 9th August at 6pm
Clonbonny Cemetery
Due to Covid 19 restrictions cemetery Sunday masses are cancelled. As a result of this there is no gate collection for the upkeep of the cemetery. The committee have set up a Go Fund me page to help with these costs. Alternatively, people can donate by putting donation in to an envelope with their name and drop in to Joe and Martina O Brien’s Shop or Mags Hair Salon.
Meeting of Bord na Mona Workers
Lough Ree Angling hub will launch a new Access for All boat service on the River Shannon in September 2020. This new state of the art angling boat will be powered by two engines and will have the capacity to carry ten people and a crew of two on the river. This passenger boat will be the first in Britain and Ireland to carry seven people with disability and wheelchair-bound or have mobility issues. It will also serve as a heritage tourism service for the islands of Lough Ree as required.
In preparation for the boat’s launch and the development of a new outdoor recreation centre here, the angling hub is recruiting and training a panel of up to 20 people who will work on water and dry land on a full-time, part-time paid and voluntary basis. Part of this group will also offer their services as angling guided to visitors to the area – when required.
A training course has now been organised for early September for people who are interested in committing themselves to taking part in this training.
All those with an interest in boating and fishing are invited to get in touch with us before Wednesday 1st July – especially present or previous workers with Bord na Móna or ESB who may be looking for alternative employment.
A series of 2 information meetings for present and former Bord na Mona and ESB workers who are interested in being part of this project will take place on this Wednesday 1st July at 3.30pm and 5.30pm at the Access For All Boat Shed on the North Quayside in Ballyleague. Admission is by ticket only. Lough Ree Distillery features on Virgin Media
It was great to see one of our own local businesses, Lough Ree Distillery, feature on the Backing Business slot on Ireland AM this morning. In the clip, Peter Clancy CEO, explained some of the innovative ways in which the team at Lough Ree Distillery have adapted their business as a result of COVID 19.
The backstory to the company’s CosSan foot operated sanitiser dispenser unit has Lanesboro’s thumbprints all over it, and I’m told there’s more to come shortly with announcements of awards and new products.
It’s fantastic to see a homegrown local business gain well deserved national profile, and we wish Peter and the team continued success.
Best Life Summer Camp
A new Best Life Summer Camp will take place at Hannon’s Hotel, Roscommon from Tuesday 4th August to Friday 7th August. The camp will take place for 6 to 9-year olds from 9.30am to 12.30pm and for 10 years and older from 1.30 to 4.30pm. The camp is limited to 15 per group and it will cosy €70.
Activities will include Life Lessons, Games, Art, Yoga and Meditation and the topics covered will be growing friendships, confidence booster, gratitude attitude, destroy your worries, dealing with mean words, and standing up for yourself.

News from St. Mary’s Church
Cemetery Sunday: Mass will be offered privately on Sunday next 5th July for all those interred in Rathcline Cemetery.
Weekly Envelopes: Fr. Mickey would like to thank everyone who continue to drop off their weekly envelopes into his house. These are times of hardship and difficulties and your generosity is deeply appreciated.
Tax Relief Scheme: The Tax Relief forms are for all who contribute, not just P.A.Y.E. and self-employed, but for everyone regardless of their source of income. These forms need to be completed once in every 5 years. You are asked to return your forms to the presbytery as soon as possible.
Kilgefin parish notes
Kilgefin Parish Drive-in Mass
Kilgefin Parish will host a drive-in Mass at St Faithleach’s GAA Club at 11am on Sunday 5th July.
Following the easing of restrictions our first public Mass in the parish will be celebrated by Fr. Dusmanta from the porch of the Clubhouse. A Drive-in Mass has been chosen to allow more parishioners to attend.
People are asked to arrive ten minutes early and to only come in cars or other vehicles. Stewards will be there to direct parking. To ensure social distancing everyone will be asked to remain in their car for the duration of Mass.
Information on future Masses in the Parish will be communicated at the event. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Rathcline GAA
On Sunday last, live on Shannonside Radio Sport the draw for the Peter Hanley sponsored Senior Football Championship took place. The draw was for a 12-team championship that there would be four groups with three teams in each. The top two teams in the group would qualify for the quarter finals where there would be an open draw. We were drawn out with Mullinalaghta and Colmcille and we will have a bye in the first round, playing Mullinalaghta in our first game and Colmcille in the final game.
This is a group we can be very confident of emerging from and we look forward to the excitement of senior championship football.
The GAA has given the sanction for training to recommence at all senior and underage levels albeit under Co-Vid 19 restrictions. Numbers are great and there is a great deal of enthusiasm following the long lay-off and the prospect of playing games in the near future.
We wish all players and teams managements the very best of luck in all their upcoming competitions.
