Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Monday 18th November 2019

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Due Recognition

For his lifetime, if not a player or supporter, Eamonn Bolger, Ballyleague, has been a tireless volunteer in many codes. Last week in Farmleigh House, Dublin he received national recognition when winning the Federation of Irish Sport – EBS Volunteers award. Eamonn was nominated by Ballyboro FC and not only had he their support but also the support of the GAA, Community Games and rugby all sports he has been involved with over many years. Eamonn as long as I have known him has been an assiduous volunteer giving great time and dedication to the many young teams and groups, he has been associated with year in year out. If he had the time to spare, he would be at any event in the named codes supporting and following the sporting development of all the young people he was involved with over the years.

Eamonn was presented with his award and a cheque of €250 for his Ballyboro club by the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport with special responsibility for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin.

Eamonn’s value is no longer a local secret and there is nobody that deserved it more. Congratulations Eamonn and thank you for all your time and energy.

Breakfast Morning

Lanesboro Tidy Towns committee had a tremendous attendance for their annual ‘Breakfast Morning’ in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on Sunday last. As usual a wonderful number turned up to support and they were not disappointed by the breakfast they received. A community morning fully supported by the community and volunteers whether it was in the sponsoring of all foods or all the volunteers that carried out all the required tasks and gave greatly of their time. The buzz of chat was lively throughout, and it was very special with so many people turning up and supporting this wonderful community event.

The Tidy Towns committee and FAS workers continues to do trojan work in the community all year round. They have great pride in their work hence the town and surrounds look amazing all the year round.

Longford County Council rewards the community with an award for the greatest percentage increase in the points in the National Tidy Towns. This year it was Lanesboro that received the accolade with a remarkable increase in points from 288 last year to 307 points this year in 2019.

We must congratulate all involved and we look forward to helping in the coming year by ensuring that in and around our properties will be clean and tidy.

Showing how much of a community event this Breakfast Morning is that the Rathcline U20 who are playing the U20 final on Sunday next finished, when they finished training Cllr Mark Casey had organised that the panel would all join the rest of the community and have their breakfast in the hall. A wonderful gesture Mark.

Strategic Plan

Did you miss the Think Tank/Brainstorming session in the Parish Hall Lanesboro a few weeks ago? It was a hugely positive event with a large number of ideas and suggestion put forward.
Last Monday 11th November they availed of the opportunity offered to the Lanesboro Ballyleague Collaboration Group to meet with the three Government Ministers namely Richard Bruton, Josefa Madigan and Kevin Boxer Moran. The group was led by its chairman Vinny Mc Gowan and would like to thank Micheál Carrigy for getting the group this meeting. It proved to be an excellent and very worthwhile meeting.
As a consequence of this meeting there is a need to draw up a strategic plan for furnishing to the Just Transition Commissioner Kieran Mulvey.
There is still an opportunity for you to make your contribution if you so wish. In recent days it has been put it up on social media and some brilliant ideas were forwarded for inclusion. It is remarkable the great ideas for our community (we would appreciate some from outside of the community) that are out there, and we are hugely appreciative of everyone who took the time to attend the Think Tank and also those that have furnished their views for inclusion. There are some massive projects now with us and with your support both home and abroad, the support of the two county councils and the Government we will once again have a thriving community.

We are looking for anyone locally, from neighbouring parishes or further afield that has a proposal that whey would like included in our strategic plan. From the proposals the group is looking at a number of feasibility studies and this is the chance to have your ideas included in the hope that it can be fruitful.
If you have not already made a submission through the Think Tank, the collaboration group would invite your contribution. Please email to joeaobrien@outlook.com  or leave handwritten submission into O’Brien’s shop where they will be forwarded to the collaboration group.
We would ask that this is done within the next two weeks.

Bord na Mona Estates Mass

On Thursday last a big number attended the mass for deceased members of the three local Bord na Mona estates. Ned Nealon would like to Fr. Mickey Reilly for facilitating the mass. People travelled long distances to be with us – it was most appreciated just to remember their families and former workmates. Following mass there were refreshments in St. Mary’s Parish Hall where the tea, sandwiches, and biscuits led to a settling in and they began enjoying their conversations and renewing old friendship – as expected the conversation went on a long time. Ned would like to thank Sean Moran and his FÁS crew and especially Nuala Malone, Mike Greene, Tom Gill and Francis Clyne for their time and efforts. He would also like to thank the hall committee for the use of the hall and Joe and Martina O’Brien for providing the refreshments.

Triathlon Club

On Friday evening last the official opening of the Lanesboro Triathlon club gym took place at the clubs’ new gym and meeting room. The cutting of the ribbon and official opening of the gym was performed by the club’s main sponsor Brendan Cooney, Homevalu Hardware. The evening opened with a welcoming address from club chairman Ian Crosbie. Niall Mulvihill head of the group organising the swim from Kilnacarrow bridge to Lanesboro bridge presented cheques of €2,400 to the Charity of Western Alzheimer’s and Alzheimer’s Longford raised from the swim on August Bank Holiday Monday. Brendan O’Sullivan spoke of the history of the club. While the club’s history is a short nine years there has been so much packed into such a short time. Carmel Hayes spoke of the transition from couch to tri for her in 2019. Chris Kitchen CEO of Triathlon Ireland and Vice President of the European Triathlon Union spoke to the large crowd. He was intrigued with the numbers involved in the club and its growing membership. Chris also mentioned the numbers and work that is going into the junior section of the club.

Overall, it was a very special night for the club. They now have a base on the Main Street, and I am sure this visibility will attract more and more new members.

The awards night by Triathlon Ireland will take place next weekend and our triathlon club is among the top six contenders for major awards. We wish them well. We know they are the best and hope that they will be recognised by Triathlon Ireland as the best.

The very best of luck with the new gym and for another successful year in 2020

A day in the Young Life

Friday last was a momentous day for 157 of the youth of our country when they came together for the Youth Assembly on Climate Action. What made this especially historic was that it was the first one in the world to be held in its Government Buildings.

Part of that historic occasion was Áine Kennelly, daughter of Brian and Breda Kennelly Carrowstrawley.

The Assembly meet early morning before going off in defined groups to discuss Climate Change alternatives and propose actions. The committee rooms in the House of the  Oireachtas were taken over to generate their conversations and to arrive at their key recommendations.

On returning the Youth Assembly presented to Government a list of 10 recommendations as to what they felt was the most pressing issues.

Later that evening the group were guests at the Late Late Show where presenter Ryan Tubridy held a conversation with a number of them including Áine. She, in a very confident, assured and articulate way said that there was a need to rehabilitate the bogs as it was a tremendous carbon with the capability of storing twice as much carbon as the rain forest. She also said that there was a need to support communities in Transition due to the decisions by ESB and Bord na Mona. It was very important to ensure that they are not sacrificed in the name of Climate Change.

For Áine and the other 156 members of the Youth Assembly this was a historic day and one I am sure that they will never forget. I believe there were 4 representatives in total from County Longford and I would like to congratulate each and every one of them on their historic day.

Ballyboro

Following the previous weeks 100% winning return results were not so favourable at the weekend.

First into action were the under 10s and they acquitted themselves very well in a game of fluctuating fortunes against Kenagh Falcons. This was the first competitive Ballyboro game to be played on the new 3G pitch, and Eoin Beattie had the honour of scoring the first goal on the pristine surface with yet another cracking effort. Two more well taken goals from Rian Hogan left the Ballyboro lads 3-1 up at the interval. Kenagh largely dominated the second half, but an inspired performance by goalkeeper Mikey Sorohan kept them at bay, until the closing stages, when two late goals snatched the spoils for Kenagh. Ballyboro: Mikey Sorohan, Ciaran McGloin, Eoin Beattie, John Farrell, Leon Malkowski, Óisín Dillon, Eoghan Mullooly, Evan Rooney. Subs: Sean O’Dowd. Emri, Sean Collins.

The under 13s lost their unbeaten league record when they were defeated 6-2 by Melview. Fielding an understrength team, the Ballyboro lads battled hard but had to give best to a very strong Melview outfit. Billy Murray from a penalty and Christian Donlon scored for Ballyboro. Team: Ronan Cox, Luke Johnston, Aidan Kelly, Euan Cullen, Jack Beattie, Jack Brogan, Christian Donlon, Cody Phelan, Billy Murray, Conn Maxwell, Daniel Hogan. Subs: Ethan Slattery, Anthony Cox, Brendan Mulvihill.

The under 11s girls winning run came to an end when they went down 6-2 to a very skilful Newtown team. Emma Dowd scored two superb goals for Ballyboro. Team: Anna Cox, Sophie Cox, Amy Burke, Kate Malone, Marianna Donlon, Emma Feeney, Lillie Dowd, Sarah Healy. Subs: Ava Brehon, Maria Forde, Laura Rattigan, Emma Dowd, Siun McElgunn.

Congratulations to Aidan Kelly and Billy Murray who have been selected on the Longford under 12 League squad following a series of trials.

Fixtures: The under 8 play their first Blitz on the new 3G pitch on Saturday where Melview provide the opposition. The action gets underway at 1pm. The under 12s are away to Ballymoe on Saturday in the Connacht Shield, kick off 12 noon. The under 15s play Newtown in Newtownforbes on Saturday at 12.30.
