Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Monday 12th August 2019

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Correction

Last week in my notes I posted pictures received from Sean Connaughton of the building of the new bridge. In my commentary I stated that Sean was part of the design/engineering team. This was not a fact. I misunderstood the conversation we had. Sean had worked for the consulting engineers in the 70’s and was not part of the consulting team for the replacement bridge. My apologies for the misrepresentation.

Good Luck Saoirse

We would like to wish Saoirse Feeney, daughter of Kieran and Ciara Feeney, Tullyvrane the very best of luck as she represents Lanesboro and Longford in the All-Ireland Community Games Finals in Limerick next weekend. Saoirse is a member of the Lough Ree Athletic Club.

Church Gate Collection

By now we all understand the vital service the Defibrillator group play in the community. To ensure that the defibrillators are fully equipped with batteries the group will hold their annual Church Gate Collection on Saturday and Sunday next 17th and 18th August at St. Mary’s Church, Lanesboro.

The following weekend the Defibrillator group will move to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague for their annual collection.

Everyone is asked to be as generous as possible for the equipping of one of the most vital units that you see located throughout our community.

A new training and upskilling course will be commencing in the near future and if you are interested in being trained in the use of the defibrillator then you should give your name to Martina O’Brien by calling into the shop, phoning 0863858934.

The Lough Ree Golfing Society will make their annual visit to the very popular Athenry Golf Club this coming Friday 16th August. The tee is booked from 11am and it is hoped that a big number of local golfers and their friends will travel for another great day with the Society. All year the weather has treated the Society well and we hope that Friday will be no different.

Championship time

St. Faithleach’s seniors will commence their senior championship campaign on Saturday evening next when they travel to Mulhern Park, Fuerty for their meeting with Michael Glavey’s. The game has a throw in time of 5.30pm. It would be great to see a big local crowd turning out to cheer on the team.

Bord na Mona/ESB Update

The EPA have given Lough Ree Power permission to recommence the production of electricity subject to a number of conditions. There is also a lead in time of 28 days and if any objections are received within that time then I believe there will be an oral hearing, hence delaying the recommencement until a decision is made on the objection.

All going well there will be smoke once again rising from the chimney in the very near future and Bord na Mona can recommence moving peat back into the station and some semblance of normality will return for the workers and indeed the entire area.
