Senior Championship
Friday evening next we make the short trip to Newtowncashel for the final round of the Championship group where we will play Longford Slashers. The game is fixed for a 7.45pm throw in. This is a vital game for the seniors, and it is hoped that a huge number of supporters will travel to Cashel to give vocal support to the team. We wish the panel and management the very best of luck.
Kayak Camp
A 3-day Kayaking camp will take place in Lanesboro/Ballyleague commencing on Monday week 19th August. The age group is from 10 to 17 and the cost is just €45 per person. All gear except wetsuit will be provided – tracksuit and top will do. To book your place contact 0872977769 for further details

Diocesan Appointment
Fr. Brendan O’Sullivan who was curate in Kiltoghert, Carrick-on-Shannon has recently been appointed as Parish Priest in Ballinahown, Co. Westmeath. We wish him well as Parish Priest and a very happy time in Ballinahown.

Death
It was with great sadness we learned of the death on Thursday last 1st August at Inis Ree Lodge, Ballyleague of Mrs Patricia Bracken, Ballyglass. Patricia was more commonly known as Ciss was predeceased by her husband Paddy. Ciss was a native of Killenaule, Co. Tipperary and came to the area with her husband Paddy who was working with Bord na Mona. Ciss was very warm and welcoming lady and she left no stone unturned in helping anyone that was in need of aid. She was a quiet and unassuming lady with a caring demeanour. Her warmth of welcome to friend and stranger alike was always a something to behold. She was a lovely lady to converse with and her presence in our community added quality. She was a great family lady with great dedication to her late husband and her three daughters. Her passing will leave a great emptiness in the hearts and minds of everyone that had the pleasure to know her.
Her remains reposed at her residence in Ballyglass on Saturday. Her removal took place to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague, on Sunday for her Funeral Mass. Following Mass, she was laid to rest in Cloontuskert cemetery.
To her daughters Mary (Dublin), Deirdre (Cloonadra), and Ricella (Tyrellspass), sisters, brother, relatives and friends we extend our sincere sympathy.
Memories
The photographs are compliments of Sean Connaughton, Main St, who worked during the 70’s with the consulting engineers for the bridge as it changed for the old wooden ‘Bailey Bridge’ to the present structure that we know since 1972. Sean was not part of the consulting team for the bridge.
All Ireland Champions
Many congratulations to the Longford Minor ladies team who travelled to Duggan Park, Ballinasloe for the All-Ireland Minor B Final on Saturday and came away as All Ireland champions. The Rathcline ladies had two on the panel Aoife Nolan from Fermoyle and Cait Kiely from Cloontagh and we would like to congratulate them, their fellow panel members and team management on a fabulous victory. The final scoreline was Longford 2-9 to Roscommon’s 2-5. We commiserate with the local St. Faithleach’s girls who were on the losing side Ellen Irwin, Kate Mc Phillips and Jennifer Brennan, there is no doubt but there are better days ahead for those girls.
On Sunday the Roscommon senior ladies played the All-Ireland Intermediate quarter final in Kinnegad on Sunday and by virtue of a 2-18 to 2-10 victory over Kildare they sealed their semi-final place. The semi-final will take place in the coming weeks. On the Roscommon panel were local girls Amanda McLoone, Amy Curley and Joan Geoghegan. We wish the girls the best of luck in the semi-final.

Bord na Mona and ESB
This week was like looking into a bog hole. It was all muddy and unclear with nothing to report from any of the companies. The Minister, Richard Bruton, was in Tullamore meeting elected representatives and both companies. One has to wonder why he was not in Lanesboro meeting local representatives and community groups. Makes you wonder as to the importance of the workers and people of this area. The good news is that the Bord na Mona workers are still working. Let us hope that this continues until the water level rises and the power stations comes back on load.
Annual Pilgrimage[JO1]
The annual one-day pilgrimage to Lough Derg will take place on Sunday 25th August with the bus leaving the grounds of Ballyleague Hall at 7am. All enquiries should be made to Mary 043-3321969
Sliabh Bán Book
The hugely popular history on Sliabh Bán is back on sale and as we are going into holiday season it would make a wonderful read over the summer or even as a present for all those returning during holiday time. The book is available for sale in O’Brien’s costing €20.

Cemetery Sunday in Cloontuskert graveyard will be celebrated on Sunday next 11th August at 6pm.
Ballyboro Registration
Ballyboro Soccer club has a very busy season ahead with brilliant new club facilities coming online in September.
Registration of players (aged under 8 to Under 18 BOYS and GIRLS) will open on Friday August 16th 6-8pm at Lanesboro Community College – with a special preview on the evening of the progress being made at the new club astro pitch for all players and parents to see.
Registration will stay open for 2 weeks and will close on Friday August 30th from 6-8pm at St Mary’s hall, Lanesborough
Ballyboro is the schoolboy soccer club catering for all under 8 to under 18 boys and girls in Lanesborough, Ballyleague, Cloontuskert/Fermoyle, Rathcline/Kilgefin, Cashel, Killashee, Scramogue, Tarmonbarry areas
The club AGM this year will take place on Friday August 23rd at 7.30pm in St Mary’s hall, Lanesborough. All parents are invited to attend. The club needs volunteers to operate all teams successfully and our new grounds too so please come along.
Ballyboro will open our new astro pitch in September at Lanesboro Community College. The club has a vacancy for a caretaker at the grounds. Candidates who are eligible for the TUS scheme should get in touch with us before August 15th.
DVDs of the recent very successful Oskar night will be available from the club in September.
Ballyboro FC has reserved places in a FAI level 1 coaching course for parents and other adults on Saturday September 14th. If you would like to attend, please let us know.

Tidy Towns Lotto
The winning numbers drawn in the Lanesboro Tourism Co-Op on Tuesday morning last were 3, 16, 26 and 27. There was nobody with the winning numbers and the jackpot pool has now risen to €4,700. The winner of the €50 prize was Mags c/o Mags, and the three €20 winners were Eugene Mulvihill, Killashee, Pauline Casey, Lehery, and Jean Fallon.

What we were hoping for a long time came to pass on Monday night 29th July when the 50/50 pool exceeded the €500 mark. The pool stood at a wonderful €530 and the lucky winners were David and Sharon Dowd, Thureen. Our aim is that from now on we can grow the pool to over €500 each week. This can be done only with your support for the Tickets are on sale in local shops and businesses throughout the town. at €2 each or 3 tickets for €5. As you now know there are two alternatives for those that would like to play the 50/50 by paying in advance. Option 1 is the green envelope where you pay €50 for a six-month term with one free draw and Option 2 is the pink envelope where you pay €100 for a 12-month period with two free draws. Those tickets are available in any of the local outlets or from any member of the club executive.

Explore Longford Young Photographers’ Competition
Longford Tourism and Sports Partnership in conjunction with Longford Libraries are running a photography competition. Email a high-quality photo of a scene/ attraction/town/village in County Longford. The competition will run from 1st July – 31st August. One photo entry per person. Send photo as an attachment to photocompetition@longfordcoco.ie with your name, age and details of where the photo was taken. Winning photo in each category (4-11) (12-18) will win a voucher to the value of €200 for a bike from Km Cycles. Please note photo entries may be used for promotional purposes. Heritage Week
The theme for Heritage Week this year is ‘Past Times’. With this in mind, local historian John Casey has put together an immense amount of historical information, books and photographs and you are all welcome to come along to ‘A Celebration of Local History’ on Thursday 22nd August at 7pm to the library. There will be a slideshow, various readings and an array of books on local history. We will also have on display our exhibition on ‘Business in Lanesboro 1900-2015’. Light refreshments will be served.
Foreign Currency & Used Stamps
We are still collecting unwanted foreign currency and old coins/notes in aid of ISPCC. The smallest donation can make a huge difference.

Leader Cup on Wednesday
On Wednesday evening last the senior team got the chance of getting back on tack when they faced second in the Leader Cup league table Killoe. The team performed very well and were very unlucky not to come out with a win but in the end had to settle for a draw.

Royal Canal Cycle
The Royal Canal fundraising cycle, ‘Saddle Up for Rathcline’ will take place on Saturday 17th August. This is a sponsored cycle along the Royal Canal all along the recently renovated route from Maynooth to Lanesboro. The route distance is approximately 120km which you can cycle or for the novice cyclist or club supporter you can take the option on one of the 15km. Bicycles will be provided and for those taking part in the 15km cycle. The cost /sponsorship is €50 per person and it is hoped to have teams of 4.
The cycle will finish in the club grounds in Clonbonny with the official switching on of the new scoreboard.
There will be a social evening at the club grounds with a barbeque commencing at 8pm. This event is open to the entire community and supporters.
