Death
The news broke on Sunday 26th May of the death at Costello’s Nursing Home, Ballyleague of one of our favourite sons Hillary O’Sullivan, Main Street. He was predeceased by his daughter Kathleen. Hillary had been in failing health in recent times but learning of his death still shocked. Hillary was a larger than life character in our community for many years. Born and reared in Knock where he lived and did all the things young people get up to. He was a footballer of note with the Rathcline club and was a stalwart of the club for many years and in the past 16 years he was a very proud president of the club. Following a spell in England he came back home and worked with Bord na Mona until his retirement. Hillary was also a member of Lanesboro Fire Brigade for a long number of years. Hillary loved everything about our community, he loved to see development and was always encouraging especially our youth. He thrived on the success of our local youth and was always delighted to speak of the achievements of our youth be it academically or on the sporting field – he felt great pride for their personal success. He was a most wonderful caring neighbour and friend. Hillary was a man with a heart of gold and a very friendly man, always ready to assist anyone in need of help and support. His passing will leave a great emptiness in the hearts and minds of everyone that knew him. The attendance at the reposing of his remains at his home on Monday and again at the removal of his remains to St Mary Church for his Funeral Mass bore ample testimony to the esteem in which he was held. Following Mass his remains were laid to rest in Clonbonny cemetery.
To his wife Vera, son Brendan, daughters Valerie, Jennifer and Catherine, brothers Vincent, Noel, Michael and Val, sister Rosaleen, relatives and many many friends we extend our sincere sympathy.
Whist Drive
One of the last Whist Drives of the season will take place on Friday night next 7th June in St. Mary’s Parish Hall at 8.30pm. Lanesboro Social Services help greatly within our community and if you and your friends are card players I urge you to go along and support one of the most vital groups in the parish. Their work is unseen, but it is greatly appreciated. If you cannot make it on Friday night a contribution would be greatly appreciated, and you can leave one in O’Brien’s and it will be passed on to the committee.

Election
On Friday last 24th May it was the turn of our local community to turn out and vote in the local county council elections on both sides of the bridge.
In the Longford County Council, Ballymahon Local Electoral Area, we had our two local councillors Mark Casey and Gerald Farrell once again putting themselves forward for re-election. Following many hard weeks of canvassing it all came down to the people to decide the fate of our two candidates.
The total votes in the Ballymahon LEA was 6,732 with a quota of 949 being the magical number. Following the first vote Mark Casey was one of the poll toppers with a wonderful total vote of 949 votes. This vote seen Mark elected on the first count having exceeded the quota.
Gerard Farrell’s first vote of 621 put him into a very strong position to be returned and following seven further counts Gerard was easily elected on the eight count.
It was a remarkable voted for both our local men and we would like congratulate of the and wish them the very best working for the next five years
Meditation for Beginners
Meditation for Beginners continues in Ballyleague on Wednesdays, 7 – 8pm on Wednesday evenings. There are still a very limited of places available and if you wish to attend please phone Áine, 086-8407718 for all details.
Retiring
For almost the past 28 years we have been very familiar with Mary Ghee being our post mistress. Mary was a feature in our community, and she served us loyally over the past years. Sadness at the departure of Mary was the common thread as not only was a she our post mistress, but she was a confidant and agony aunt all rolled into one. She was a lady we all trusted and revered, and her departure was something we never wanted to happen. Mary will be sadly missed in our community and we would like to say a very big thank you to her.
We would like to wish Mary many years of the very best of health and happiness for many years to come.
Honda 50 Run on Sunday next
The annual Honda 50 Run is getting closer to its returns to Lanesboro on Sunday next 9th June. Registration will take place in St. Mary’s Hall from 10.30am to 12.15pm. The fee is €20, and it includes you in a raffle. The run will commence at 12.15pm with refreshments before and after. No helmet no run. All bikes are welcome. For details contact Jimmy 087 2289468.

Cemetery Sunday on Sunday week
With many people in our parish having relatives buried in Killashee and Ballinakill I take this opportunity to notify locals of Cemetery Sunday taking place on Sunday 16th June in the Killashee/Clondra parish. Ceremonies will take place in Killashee at 10 a.m., Clondra 12 p.m. and Ballinakill at 3 p.m.
Sliabh Bán Book
The hugely popular history on Sliabh Bán is back on sale and as we are going into holiday season it would make a wonderful read over the summer or even as a present for all those returning during holiday time. The book is available for sale in O’Brien’s costing €20.
Cemetery Sunday: note change of dates
The dates have been set for the Blessing of the Graves at the three graveyards in the parish of Rathcline. There is a change in the running order this year and you are asked take heed of the change. The first blessing will take place in Rathcline graveyard on Sunday 7th July followed by Clonbonny on 14th July and finishing with Lanesboro on Sunday 21st July.

Longford College of Further Education are accepting applicants for their Tourism and Business PLC programmes starting in September. School leavers can apply for the level 5 courses, then progress to level 6 and gain direct entry into year 2 of either the Hospitality Management degree or the Business degree in Athlone Institute of Education. Existing holders of a QQI level 5 certificate in any discipline or equivalent can apply directly onto the level 6 courses. Tidy Towns Lotto
The winning numbers drawn in the Lanesboro Tourism Co-Op on Tuesday morning last were 4, 17, 19 and 26. There was nobody with the winning numbers and the jackpot pool now rises to €3,900. The winner of the €50 prize was Leah Flynn c/o Xlntee, and the three prizes of €20 were won by Sarah Hopkins c/o Mags, Vini Mulligan and Maureen Donlon c/o Market.

Summer Bridge
Summer Bridge is starting on Monday 10th June in St. Mary’s Parish Hall Lanesboro (beside the bridge). You are asked to be seated and ready to start at 8pm. Everyone is welcome. There is a large car park at the rear of the hall.
Rathcline Bakes is back
The hugely popular Rathcline Bakes had to go for a second print and the second print copies of the book are now available in O’Brien’s. As there is only a limited number available early purchase is advisable. The books cost just €10 with some great baking recipes included.
Community Games Art
There was further representation from the area and especially the Rathcline Road – there must be something in the water on that road – at the Community Games Finals in Limerick. John Kenny & the late Angela, Rathcline Road had their daughter Deirdre’s daughter Isabelle McCormack representing Co. Kildare in U12 Model marking. Although she did not feature in the winners podium it was a marvellous achievement by Isabelle.

The organisers of the recent Cystic Fibrosis church gate collection would like to sincerely thank everyone that contributed so generously. The collection amounted to €815.

Cruinniú na nÓg – BRICKX CLUB Workshop
To celebrate Cruinniú na nÓg on Saturday June 15th we will be holding a BRICKX Club workshop in the library from 10am to 12 noon.
BRICKX Club is a creative brick building and social activity workshop for children.
In the workshop, there are a list of Themes, Challenges and Games, which the children can choose for themselves to build. They can be anything from bridges, towers, streets, pyramids…the list is endless.
Each creation the children make is put on display on the Creation Table.
Parents are invited in at the end of the workshop for ‘show and tell’ and to take pictures of their child’s creations.
Places are limited for this FREE event, so book early to avoid disappointment!

The under 10
team performed very well in the Shield final versus Newtown Bears at
Abbeycartron on Thursday last. Their first half dominance was reflected in a
2-1 lead courtesy of two well taken goals by Oisin Dillon. However, in the
second period the Newtown boys gradually got on top and they emerged victorious
by five goals to two. Ballyboro: Mikie Sorohan, Ciaran McGloin, Dan Casey, Eoin
Beattie, Rian Hogan, Rian Shanley, Oisin Dillon. Subs: Eoghan Mullooly, Evan

Earlier in the week the under 10s were guests of Longford
Town when they played at half time in the Midlands El Classico at City Calling
Stadium. The boys enjoyed the experience and thanks are due to Longford Town
for their cooperation, and in particular Avril Gilchrist.
Tickets are being snapped up for the big OSKAR night on
Saturday week. Judging by some of the trailers of the various films seen to
date it promises to be an unforgettable night with a wealth of hitherto unseen
local acting talent. A limited number of tickets are still available at O’Brien’s.
A number of fund raisers were held at the weekend and thanks are due to all who
organised and supported the following events: the Bag Pack at Super Valu; the
Table Quiz at the Central Bar; the Champions League scratch cards, winner Enda
Kenny; the Cow Shy which was won by Ollie Trimble; and the OSKAR Party Night
in Adie’s.
The final fund raiser before the big night takes place on
this Saturday night, when a novel Shaving Private Ryan event takes place at
Rosie’s.

Death
The club regretfully records the death of our club President Hillary O’Sullivan. Hillary had been in failing health in recent times but nonetheless the news of his death came as a great shock to us all. Hillary in his youth played with the club with great distinction playing his heart our for the green white and blue. For a number of years, he was working in England, but his heart was set on his native Rathcline parish sod and following his marriage to Vera. Returning to Lanesboro Hillary once again absorbed himself back into the club playing many vital roles on the executive and none more so than his role with the team management on the historic and only senior club championship that came to the club back in 1976. Some 15 years ago he was elected as president of the club a position he cherished dearly, and he proudly represented the club in his capacity as President. Hillary has been absent a short while and his absence was greatly felt. His passing has left a great sadness in the club and it will be continued to be felt for a long time to come. Hillary has left us with many fabulous memories which we will all treasure but when we remember him we will remember as fabulous servant of the parish and the Rathcline club and some of the memories will bring a wide smile to our faces as we remember the many happy times he gave us.
