Horse Fair

On Saturday last this years Lanesboro Horse Fair took place on the Main Street from the crossroads up to the Green. This is the second year back on the street and it again proves to be the rightful home for the fair judging by the comments from the spectators and those involved in buying and selling.

The day started brightly with a warm sun and the forecasted showers never materialised hence we had a beautiful day for the large crowd that attended. The horses came in large numbers and there was a very brisk business in the buying and selling. Everybody seemed very happy with the trade of the day. The numbers spectating fluctuated during the day and while the numbers were slightly down on previous year it still proved to be another great day at the Fair of Lanesboro.

A special word of praise must go to the Gardaí, the Order of Malta ambulance crew and the many stewards and committee that ensued that everything ran smoothly for the duration of the Fair. We look forward to another great day at Lanesboro Horse Fair next year.

The club is anxious that all youngsters in its catchment area of the parishes of Killashee, Cloontagh, Newtowncashel, Kilgefin/Ballyleague and Rathcline/Lanesboro avail of the facility that the Lough Ree Athletic Club offers. Past Pupils of Lanesboro Tech

Are you a past pupil of Lanesboro Vocational and Technical School or its successor the Lanesborough Community College? Did you or your children or grandchildren attend the school at Knock on the Ballymahon road out of Lanesborough over the years?

If the answer is YES to that question, then your support is now urgently needed for a major campaign to give the modern-day school an all-weather astro turf football pitch for the first time.

Every year the students at the school in Knock, Lanesboro experience difficulties with flooding and water-logging of the old grass pitch inside the running track when the heavy rainfall hits, which is why a new committee is presently fundraising to build a new state of the art astro turf pitch there and drain and re-surface the old grass pitch.

This is an appeal to past pupils of ‘the Tech’ and Lanesborough Community college to help us raise match funding to build the new facility at a cost of over €250,000.

In return for your support, the name of every past pupil and donor will be published in a new Souvenir Brochure Journal that will be made available on Saturday June 15th, 2019 at special celebratory function as part of the Ballyboro Oskar Night ceremony in the Longford Arms Hotel. Your name will also be recorded on a special sign to be erected at the school. Donations are welcome now. For details call John Tynan at 087 6221894 or Ciaran Mullooly at 087 2433201. You can post your donation directly to Ann McCormack, Treasurer, Ballyboro Football club, Cloontuskert, Lanesborough, county Longford or e mail: ballyboroastropitchcommittee@gmail.com

Féile Final

Western Gaels played their Féile Shield 13 a side  group game on Saturday 13th April last v Longford Slashers , this game turned out to be a winner takes all game as two other teams had withdrawn the previous evening , played in ideal conditions and on a good surface in Michael Fay Park it turned out to be a very entertaining game , our goalkeeper Kieran O’ Dowd (SG)  was in brilliant form throughout, Dan Devlin(GG) and Cormac O’ Dowd(SG) in the full backline had fine games , our halfback line of Conor Lyons(SG), Beau O Connor(GG) & Kielan Ruske(GG) had fine games also with their great work ethic, our midfield pairing of Harry Mulvihill(GG) & Stephen Oates(GG) were in terrific form with both getting the majority of our scores, our half forward line of John McHugh(GG), Jimmy Farrell(SG) & Niall Hawes(GG) had fine games also with their great work rate and putting the Slashers backs under constant pressure. Our full forward line of Luke Dowd(SG) & James Killian(SG) had super games and were very unlucky not to get on the scoresheet, at different stages during the game we introduced Willie Stokes(GG), Matthew Heneghan(SG), Luke Cullen(SG), Conor Farrell(SG), Josh Crawford(SG), Ruairi Carling(SG) & Kristof Muller(SG) who all played a huge part in a superb victory. Final Score Western Gaels 3-3 Longford Slashers 0-4.

We have now qualified for the Féile Shield Final with the prize for the winners a trip to the National Féile Finals hosted by Connacht at the end of June, unfortunately this final has been postponed twice due to an appeal and with no date yet confirmed at the time of writing it has turned out to be a very frustrating time for both players and management and certainly not a good advertisement for the Féile Competition.
