Midland Rally Returns
Next weekend we will see the Midland Rally return to the local area with stages taking place in the Killashee, Lanesboro and Cashel areas on Sunday. The rally always brings a great excitement and vibrancy to the communities not only with the drivers and co pilots but also the huge crowd that follows the stages. The timetable as far as I can find out goes something like this, Service Area is Mastertech Business park first car due 11:38am. Stage 1 is around Killashee first car due 9:39am; Stage 2 is around Newtowncashel first car due 10:13am and Stage 3 is around Keenagh/Moydow first car due 11:28am. These stages will be repeated in the afternoon twice more.

We wish drivers, co pilots and spectators a wonderful day and ask everyone to obey the stewards and be safety conscious throughout and have a fabulous and happy time.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Early morning was bright, cheerful with a cold breeze, but the rain came at 9am and took the gloss of what we had hope was going to be a good day weather wise. The rain was intermittent throughout the morning but come the late morning the sun reappeared and started to brighten our expectations of a great afternoon for our parade through Ballyleague and Lanesboro. The day was brilliant as was the presentation of all the floats and those that entered their floats should be rightly proud of creating a fabulous St. Patrick’s Day in our community – we are rightly indebted to you all. The turnout along the route was huge, probably the biggest yet and once again it was a special time for us all to see so many lining the street to welcome the floats and especially for the hard-working committee that continues to do a wonderful job year on year.
As usual local TD Eugene Murphy done a wonderful job and was his inimitable self as MC for the day- he never fails us. It was another one of those magical days in our community. We seem to be building up great occasions throughout each year and we look forward seeing more big events happening month in month out.
The adjudicators judged the following floats as winners: Best Overall Float – 12th Ballyboro Scout, Most Original Float – Lanesboro Fire Brigade, Best Club Float – Ballyleague Tidy Towns, Best Business Float – Tom Morris Hackney and Clarke’s Bar, Best Vintage Float – Brendan Glennon Vintage Cars, Best Junior Float – Ballyboro Astro Turf Pitch, Best Dressed Window – Friends of Asthma.
The five winners of the raffle were; Bill Murray, Ballyleague, Colin Burke, Ballyleague, Martina Wallace, Erra, Mary Mc Gushin and Charlotte Bourke, Dublin each received a winners prize of €100 each.
Coffee Morning
A Coffee Morning in support of Daffodil Day and the Irish Cancer Society will take place in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on Friday next 22nd March from 10am to 1pm. Your support can help greatly in the ongoing developments in the search for the cure for Cancer. Great work continues to be done and your support will mean a lot.
Mixed fortunes for the CBS
Cian Glennon, Michael Dunne, Liam Ormsby, James Browne and Aaron Glennon son of Vinny and Jane omitted from last week’s report were all part of the CBS Roscommon senior school panel that scored a comprehensive 5-22 to 2-11 win over Summerhill College Sligo in the Connacht Colleges B Football Final at the Connacht Centre of Excellence on Saturday last. They now go on to play the Ulster Final winners
This was some compensation for the lads that played in the Connacht Rugby Final last Wednesday and ran into a stronger Garbally side. There is a great sense of pride in making history something the rugby players did and they can be rightly proud of their achievements.
The Football Final had a particular significance for one particular family as Cian Glennon was a third generation Glennon/Murphy to play in the Connacht Final with the CBS. Cian’s grandfather Tony Murphy (1 The Green) played in the 1950/51final and lost but his feeling of loss was short-lived as that same year he won an All-Ireland medal with Roscommon Minors. In the Connacht final of 1986/87 Cian’s father Ronan was on the losing side. Last Saturday the run of losses ceased and the sense of loss in Connacht finals for this particular family was lifted for good.
The Green
The numbers of photos are starting to come in in greater numbers and I would like to thank you for your search. As I look through them, they are bringing back great memories of the people and their families. I would encourage anyone else that has photographs of the Green, and stories to contact me. I am looking for all photographs of all residents of the Green right up to the present day – just a flick on your phone, camera, iPad and forward it to me at joea@iol.ie.
If you do not have a family picture perhaps you can forward me individual pictures and the house number you live/d in.
If you don’t have a photograph from your time on the Green a family photograph from a later date will do. I am also looking for photograph of the apprentices and lodgers that stayed on the Green. You can also drop them into me in the shop where I will scan them and return them to you a minute later. Thank you.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Walter and Carmel Burke and family, Cloontuskert, on the death last week of Walter’s brother Ignatius (Iggy) Burke, Willow Park, Athlone last week.
What we missed
Due to the fixtures pile up with a game scheduled on Monday, Wednesday and All-Ireland semi-final the following Saturday I never got the opportunity to mention the exploits of Mercy Ballymahon in the Leinster Senior C Championship. They had to play a North Leinster Final on Monday which they won, 2 days later on Wednesday they had to play a Leinster Final which they duly won to progress to the All-Ireland semi final scheduled for 3 days later on the Saturday. After serious negotiations the game was moved to the following Tuesday where they played their third vital game in 8 days and unfortunately came out the wrong side on the scoreline against a Patrician Academy, Mallow side.
Before I commend our local players, I must mention the madness that the young men had to go through. Considering the majority of them are Leaving Cert you have to ask if the organisers have the interest of the young players at heart. 3 matches in 8 days is total lunacy when there are no exams during the summer to think of this schedule in the middle of the second last school term really beggars belief. Thankfully, I believe there were no injuries from the 3 games but that is just a lucky thing.
The parish of Rathcline were privileged to have a magnificent eight players on the panel and we must surely acknowledge them for their incredible efforts. Oran Kenny, Cian Gilmore, Cronan Flood, Éanna Mc Grath, Bryn Peters, Seadhna Ryan, Richard Prior and Kevin Tansey all wore their school jersey with pride and there is no doubt that this talented eight will help drive the Rathcline club forward to great success when their turn comes in the Rathcline jersey.

The next Alzheimer cafe will be held on this Wednesday 27th March at 7.00pm. in the room at the back of Longford Credit Union. Guest Speaker on the night is Marie Mc Givney PHN, and her topic is Caring for people with Dementia. This is an information and social evening with tea, coffee, and refreshments been served. Lanesboro Community Games
It is a wonderful thing to have an active Community Games in our parish and thankfully that is what we have with Lanesboro Community Games. There are a number of people doing a lot of work and fair play to them. If you would like to help out or have a young person to participate then bring him/her to the competitions notified here in these notes or contact some of the people mention for their great work or the phone number at the bottom of these results.
Swimming: Well done to all of our participants in the
Community Games County Swimming Finals last weekend. We had great success.
Jane Dowd, Duileach Ryan and Dylan Hanly got individual golds in their
respective competitions. The U13 Boys Relay team of Con Maxwell, Fionn Crossan,
Diarmuid Hanly and Mikey Sorohan, swam great and won gold also.
There were two Silver medals for Shane Farrell,
a silver medal for Diarmuid Hanly & Laoise Hanly and Bronze medals for Con
Maxwell and Fionn Crossan in the individual swimming events. Máitiu Hanly swam
really well and achieved a silver medal. Alice Farrell had a great swim but was
unlucky not to get a medal.
A huge Thank you to Teresa Ryan for managing the
swim team. Thank you to all the participants for taking part and best of luck
to all those going forward to the National Finals in May.
U16 Basketball: Well done to Mr Michael Lyons (Manager) and the
U16 Community Games Lanesborough Basketball team who played Granard last
week. We came up against a good Granard side and we gave a great fighting
and competitive display. Granard won out on the night. This was our first time
to enter this competition in recent history and proved to be very popular. The
panel of players, on the night, was Kieran O Dowd, Conor Lyons, Edgars Veinbergs,
Daire Cox, Matthew Heneghan, Jimmy Farrell, Aaron Kenny, Alex Forde, John
Doyle, Joshua O’Reilly.
Many Thanks to Mr Lyons for organising the team
and training, over the last few weeks. Thank you also to Deirdre Forde for
helping out and contributing her valuable basketball experience.
Indoor U13 Boys Indoor Soccer: Well
done to all who took part in the recently held Indoor Soccer competition in
Kenagh. The team reached the quarterfinal stage, where they were narrowly
beaten by a good Killoe team. Our U13 panel was Cormac O’Dowd, Luke
Cullen, Euan Cullen, Ben Murphy, Ronan Cox and Daniel Hogan. We would like to
say a big Thank you to John Tynan and Lee Cullen for managing and preparing
them.
U16 Chess Community Games: Well
done to our U16 Chess team who recently got to the county final. They played a
very good Drumlish team but had to settle for silver medal in the end. It
was a great display considering how young our team was. The team was Bilguun
Russell, Conor Lyons, Kieran O’Dowd, Conor Farrell and Cormac O’Dowd.

Oskars Launch:
Since Sept 1st last year a small committee of dedicated volunteers has raised €25,000 for to build a new astro football pitch in our community. The pitch will be for everybody of every age who wants to use it at the track beside Lanesborough Community College.
The committee has two active grant applications for up to €200,000 ongoing but it is clear they will need around €100,000 of matching funding to get the pitch done this coming summer and that’s why they are launching one big push at fundraising in the next few weeks when you and your family and friends will be asked to take a small part of some sort in an Oskar night.
7 short films of less than 10 minutes duration will be shot by a professional company (Kevin Rowe Events) here around all areas where Ballyboro players live around Easter. Every community organisation is invited along with parents of students to then come to the auditions on Sunday March 24th at 6pm in the Community College to kick it off and, when it is over, the films will be shown at a Mega Ballyboro Oskar Premiere Night on Saturday June 15th. In the next ten days you will be asked by one of the committee members to play a part. Please say yes. And if you don’t want any role in the film (even as an extra) we still want your help please because we urgently need people to help behind the scenes for a 10-week period only. See you all on Sunday March 24th in Lanesborough Community College at 6pm for the kick-off.

Ballyboro
The big event
of the weekend is the launch and auditions for the major OSKARS night which
will be held on this Sunday 24th, at 6pm in Lanesboro Community College. The
OSKARS night in June is the major fundraiser for the new Astro Football pitch,
a facility which will be of great benefit to the schools’ and the local
community. The club are looking for local people to get involved in the OSCARS
in whatever capacity that suits: a main role, a minor role, an extra, or just
to help behind the scenes. Following the auditions on Sunday evening there will
be one rehearsal per week for one hour with the Producer, starting Wednesday
March 27th,with filming of scenes to be held on the weekends of May 4th and
5th, and May 11th and 12th. Anyone who wishes to help out is asked to be
present on Sunday evening, so don’t be shy all you budding George Clooney’s and
Meryl Streep’s, get involved in what is sure to be a memorable experience, and
at the same time help to provide a much-needed facility for the area. If you can’t
be present on Sunday evening you can contact any one of the organising

On Monday night last, the draw took place for the weekly 50/50 draw. This week our winner was Rory Duncan, Knock Manor, Longford Road. The winning envelope this week was worth €429. Rory has just moved to Lanesboro and the new housing estate and it is great to see him supporting the club and getting his reward. The club welcomes all the new residents to Lanesboro. Perhaps next week it can be your turn, all you have to do is to buy a ticket for €2 to be in the draw.
It is wonderful to see the 50/50 continuing to rise each week and a special thank you to all of you that are new to supporting the draw and those weekly contributors. Let’s hope that in the very near future the draw each will consistently top the €500 mark and it can with your continued support.

€15,000 Tidy Towns
The Lanesboro Tidy Towns Lottery draw took place on Tuesday morning last on the Co-Op office. There was no winner of the €15,000, jackpot and the jackpot for this week and the jackpot has now reached its maximum of €15,000. The numbers drawn were, 16, 18, 24 and 28. The winner of the €50 prize was Barbara Ferguson, Knock, and the three €20 winners were Eileen and Kathleen, Moher, Mary Tiernan, Ferefad, Longford, and Eddie Shea c/o Mags.
The committee thanks everyone for tremendous and loyal support support.

Season Throw-in
Saturday next the footballing season will commence in Clonbonny when our Reserve League team will take on Mostrim in the first round of the league. The game will throw-in at 5.30 and we would ask all of the players be in the dressing room at 4.45pm.
Since it has been a long time since our last game, we would like to think that our game starved supporters will turn out in big numbers for this game.
