Historic Victory
It is not too long ago that rugby became part of the sporting curriculum in the CBS Roscommon. In a short period of time they have developed greatly and on Wednesday last they had a historic victory over Coláiste Iognáid, Galway at Creggs Rugby Club on Wednesday last in the semi-final of the Connacht Senior Cup. It is not every day that young men or women we know make history and it is fabulous to know and share those historic moments with those fantastic young men. A famous victory has been rewarded by a trip to the Showgrounds, Galway for the final on Wednesday 14th March. Who else would you want to meet other than the kingpins of Schools Rugby over the years Garbally College? It is the kingpins you always want to beat. There are four local lads representing our community and we would like to congratulate Jack Tucker, Mountcashel son of Martin and Sarah, Cian Glennon, Cloonadra, son of Ronan and Claire Glennon, Michael Dunne, Ballyclare son of Declan and Martina, and team captain Conor Lohan, Ballagh son of Shay and Mary and their team mates and management on a fantastic and historic victory and look forward to another victory on the 13th March.
I know this victory will make all of us that attended the CBS very proud of the team achievements of the team and of the school.

Death
There was great sadness in our community when it was learned on Saturday last 23rd of the death of Vincent Nee, Cloonadra. Vinny as he was most commonly know moved back to Ireland with his parents a number of years ago. Such was the personality of the man that it took no time at all to become one of the locals. He was a warm and friendly man, always the good word and a heart of gold. A while after coming home his father Chris passed away and in the intervening time his mother Una became ill, and Vinny was a constant with her until her passing. His soft and gentle manner was a great succour to her at her time of need. Vinny shortly afterwards became ill himself and he faced his illness with a great strength and courage. The family trait of caring and kindness was not lost on Vinny’s daughter Rachael who came from England to take care and comfort Vinny through his illness.
He will be sadly missed for all his fun and gaiety for his willingness to help and for his special personality. Vinny left a large number of friends and we will all miss him in our community.
To his daughter Rachael, relatives and wide circle of friend we extend our sincere sympathy. His remains reposed at his residence in Cloonadra on Monday and following his Funeral Mass in the Church of the Holy Rosary Ballyleague he was laid to rest alongside his parents in St. Coman’s Cemetery, Roscommon.
The Green
The photos are starting to come in and believe me they are bringing back great memories. I would encourage anyone else that has photographs of the Green, and stories to contact me. I am looking for all photographs of all residents of the Green right up to the present day – just a flick on your phone, camera, iPad and forward it to me at joea@iol.ie. If you do not have a family picture perhaps you can forward me individual pictures and the house number you live/d in. If you don’t have a photograph from your time on the Green a family photograph from a later date will do. I am also looking for photograph of the apprentices and lodgers that stayed on the Green. You can also drop them into me in the shop where I will scan them and return them to you a minute later.

Lough Ree AC
The AGM of the club due to be held last Wednesday night was postponed to a later date due to the small number in attendance and the fact that it was an AGM. There is now a motion before the next meeting that the club be abandoned and interested athletes can join either Longford or Roscommon clubs. This is a pity as the past has been good to the club, former members Eimear Molloy, Amanda Hanley and Deirdre Hopkins were awarded athletic scholarships to the USA and Ireland. Mary Farrell was the first athlete to be offered an Irish singlet at a Junior Cross Country International in Mullingar. Brother Willie followed representing Ireland in the Irish Schools Cross Country while Padraic Connerton was part of an Irish Junior team that competed in the Nederland’s

Oskars Launch:
Since Sept 1st last year a small committee of dedicated volunteers has raised 25,000 euro for to build a new astro football pitch in our community. The pitch will be for everybody of every age who wants to use it at the track beside Lanesborough Community College.
The committee has two active grant applications for up to 200,000 euro ongoing but it is clear they will need around 100,000 euro of matching funding to get the pitch done this coming summer and that’s why they are launching one BIG push at fundraising in the next few weeks when you and your family and friends will be asked to take a small part of some sort in an Oskar Night.
7 short films will be shot by a professional company (Kevin Rowe Events) here in our area around Easter. Every community organisation is invited along with parents of students at the Community College and the football club players of the community on Sunday March 24th at 6pm in the Community College to kick it off and, when it is over, the films will be shown at a mega Ballyboro Oskar Premiere night on Saturday June 15th. In the next ten days you will be asked by one of the committee members to play a part. Please say yes. And if you don’t want any role in the film (even as an extra) we still want your help please because we urgently need people to help behind the scenes for a 10 week period only. See you all on Sunday March 24th in Lanesborough Community College at 6pm for the kick-off.
Thirty years ago, a small group of hard-working people with a vision came together and put the track and the pitch at the school – we all see what a fantastic amenity it has been for walking, running and athletics. Since Sept 1st last year our committee has raised €25,000 for our new astro football pitch. The pitch will be for everybody of every age who wants to use it at the track beside Lanesborough Community College. PLEASE support the present group trying to get the astro all weather pitch done for the next 10 weeks and we will get this over the line this summer.
We have two active grant applications for up to €200,000 ongoing but it is clear we will need around €100,000 of our own to get the pitch done this coming summer and that’s why we are launching one BIG push at fundraising in the next few weeks when you and your family and friends will be asked to take a small part of some sort in our Oskar Night.
We have all worked together and raised the first 25k. Please help us raise the last 75K. And if you don’t want any role in the film (even as an extra) we still want your help please because we urgently need people to help behind the scenes for a 10 week period only. See you all on Sunday March 24th in Lanesborough Community College at 6pm for the kick-off.
Thank you for your ongoing support from every member of our committee: Jason Fallon, Stephen Rooney, Eddie Kelly, Seamus Sorohan, Karl Crawford, Mark Tarmey, Lee Cullen, Ann McGloin, Ronnie Johnston, Eamon Bolger, Kevin Connaughton, John Tynan, Ciaran Mullooly, Carol Donlon, Dave Gilmore, Kieran Feeney.
Ballyboro
The big event of the weekend is the
major Adult Football Blitz to be held on Saturday next. Ten teams will be
battling it out to be acclaimed seven a side champions. The action will
commence at 10.30 with the final scheduled for 4pm approx. Much work has gone
into the arrangements for this occasion, so let’s hope the weather won’t be a
spoilsport.
The under 12s really enjoyed their trip to City Calling
Stadium last Saturday evening where they were the guests of Longford Town FC.
The boys played a game at half time and thanks are due to Longford Town for
their assistance, and in particular Avril Gilchrist.
It will be the under 10s turn on 11th May when they play at
half time at the Longford Town-Shelbourne game.
Though defeat was their lot, the under 11s gave their
best performance of the season so far when they played Stonepark at Longford
Mall Astro. A goal down at half time the team performed brilliantly in the
second when facing into a gale force wind. They hit the post three times before
going down by four goals to two Ethan Slattery and Eoin O’Brien scored the
Ballyboro goals. Panel: Callum Farrell, Mikey Sorohan, Eoin Beattie, Aidan
Kelly, Rian Hogan, Billy Murray, Ethan Slattery, Ryan Mimnagh, Eoin O’Brien.
Fixtures: The under 10s are away to Killoe Celtic on Saturday
at 12 noon. In the under 12 Major Division Championship on Sunday at 11am,
Ballyboro play Newtown Bears in Newtownforbes. The under 13 team play Stonepark
in Abbeycartron on Saturday k.o. 11.30. Inny Rovers provide the opposition for
the under 14s when they clash in the first round of the Shane Brennan Cup in
Lanesboro on Sunday at 11am.

Leinster League
The Western Gaels U15’s hosted Naomh Máirtín, Louth in the Leinster Cross Border League on Saturday last in Dunbeggan. The winner would be rewarded with a place in the Leinster Semi Final in the coming weeks. After a very entertaining game Western Gaels emerged victorious on a scoreline of 5-9 to 3-6. Great credit to Padraig O’Dowd, Tommy Hawes and Gay Farrell for their great work with the team.
Western Gaels would like to thank all parents for their contributions of food for the teams and officials. See comprehensive report below.
Leinster U15
Western Gaels U15s played their second game in Leinster Cross County League on Saturday last 2nd March at home to St Martins of Monasterboyce from Co Louth. Played in tough conditions and on a soft surface in Dunbeggan Park it was a game where a strong wind throughout made conditions difficult to play in. But great credit goes to both sets of players for giving us a very entertaining game. We had the wind in the first half, and this was the deciding factor in our victory as we were more clinical in front of goals than our opponents. Dan Devlin (Grattan Gaels) started in goals and had a fine game, our full back line of Beau O Connor (Grattan Gaels) , Aaron Kenny 0-1 (Shannon Gaels) & Kielan Ruske (Grattan Gaels) were immense throughout , our halfback line of Jamie Hagan(Shannon Gaels) , Ryan Casey (Grattan Gaels) & Sam Murphy (Shannon Gaels ) all had great games with their great work ethic, our midfield pairing of Matthew Hawes (Grattan Gaels) & Harry Mulvihill 0-1 (Grattan Gaels) had super games , our half forward line of Niall Chawke 0-2 (Shannon Gaels), Eoin Kinlan 2-0 (Grattan Gaels) & Gary Hand 0-3 (Grattan Gaels ) were superb throughout , our full forward line of Kieran O Dowd (Shannon Gaels) , Cillian Cox 2-2 (Shannon Gaels) & Jimmy Farrell 1-0 (Shannon Gaels) had fine games Cillian in particular putting in a man of the match performance, we went in at the break Western Gaels 4-7 St Martins 0-2, On resumption of the second half and with St Martins now having the wind advantage Cormac Casey (Shannon Gaels) entered the fray in the full back line and put in a great performance with some vital interceptions, St Martins were now throwing everything at us with the wind advantage but we weathered the storm manfully, there were a few nervy moments towards the end with a few sloppy goals conceded but in the end we held out for a great victory, this was a great team performance and when Luke Dowd (Shannon Gaels) Conor Lyons (Shannon Gaels) James Killian (Shannon Gaels) Callum Gordon (Shannon Gaels) & Matthew Heneghan (Shannon Gaels) had entered the game at different stages where they too played a huge part in this victory we were already looking forward to the Leinster Cross County Finals day in a couple of weeks . Full Time score Western Gaels 5-9 St Martins 3-7. Thanks also to the Grattan’s club for having their pitch in the best condition possible particularly after the rain that had fallen earlier that morning and also for the support on the afternoon and for the refreshments provided after the game.
Western Gaels Panel on the day:
Dan Devlin, Matthew Hawes, Kielan Ruske, Gary Hand, Ryan Casey, Eoin Kinlan, Beau o Connor, Harry Mulvihill (All Grattan Gaels)
Aaron Kenny (Capt.) Cormac Casey, Jamie Hagan, Niall Chawke, Matthew Heneghan, Kieran O’Dowd, Sam Murphy, Jimmy Farrell, Conor Lyons, Cillian Cox, James Killian, Luke Dowd, Callum Gordon (All Shannon Gaels)
