Christmas Greetings
As we face into another Christmas and New Year, I would like to wish everyone a very special Christmas and may 2019 see your wishes and dreams come to fruition.
There have been happy and sad moments, very special times and sorrowful times during 2018 we have lost people in death and emigration we have seen happiness in births, marriages, engagements, achievements and special occasions and you are all being thought about. At this time, I think of all our families that are away from us or working over Christmas and cannot make it home. I would like to wish you, your family and all our friends the great warmth and comfort through Christmastime. You are all remembered and thought greatly of, our heart leap when we think of you and the thoughts of seeing you in the New Year creates a great excitement.

Death
The end of an era was felt with a great sadness when we learned of the death at Innis Ree Lodge, Ballyleague of Mickey Kelly, Kilrooskey on Wednesday last 12th December. Throughout his life Mickey Kelly was a larger than life character admired greatly far and wide. He was predeceased by his wife Marie. Mickey, at the time of his death, was President of St. Faithleach’s GAA club who he devoted his playing life to and in later years was always available to encourage and support everyone that put on the red and white jersey. Mickey was on the players on St. Faithleach’s 1965 winning Senior Championship team.
Mickey was a builder of great renown who was always noted for the quality of his work. He was the warmest and friendliest of men and had a smile that softened even the hardest heart. He was a wonderful neighbour where a helping hand always went without saying. The community of Kilgefin and further afield has lost one of the finest gentlemen and for that everyone of us that had the undoubted pleasure of knowing him will be at a great loss. Mickey would not want us to feel that, but he left enough great memories for us to feel warmth in our hearts. Mickey’s remains reposed on Friday at his son Ollie’s home in Cloonadra and the attendance on the Friday evening and again at his Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church on Saturday bore ample testimony to the esteem in which he was held. Mickey was laid to rest alongside his wife Marie in Kilgefin Cemetery.
To his sons Ollie and Sean, daughters Denise and Mary, brother Ned, cousin Johnny Kinsella, relatives and a multitude of friends we express our deepest sympathy.
Engagement
Many congratulations to Karina Dennigan daughter of Mike and Mary Dennigan, Mahoraveen and Adrian Boyle son of Martin and Irene Boyle, Mullaghmore, Moylough, Co. Galway who announced their engagement recently.
Concert Success
The students of Lanesboro Community College presented their annual Christmas Concert in St. Mary’s Hall on Thursday 6th December. As usual the main drivers of the show were the Transition Year students who again did a wonderful job in putting a most entertaining night together. The teachers and students must be complimented, and the show was played to a full house.
Reads for Christmas
There are many reads to help you through the Christmas time. Jack Harte’s Rehabilitating the Serpent, “this poignant narrative delves into the dichotomy of religion and dares to question, analyse and confront the notions of good and evil and the parallels between love and hate” , Shamrock 165 the story of the ill-fated Aer Lingus plane crash in Snowdonia that had local lady Evelyn Belton as one of its passengers in 1952, Under the Thatch memories of growing up under thatch roofs by Séan ÓSúilleabháin. Rathcline Bakes the Rathcline GAA clubs’ book of baking recipes, Teathbha the annual historical journal, the yearly Jude Flynn publication Fireside Tales and last but not least Old Moore’s Almanac telling us all we need to know about 2019.
New Year Draw
The Rathcline club will hold its New Year Fundraising draw in the Yacht Bar on Saturday 12th January. This is an annual draw and the proceeds helps towards the paying of club affiliation and insurance for the coming year. The club asks your support by buying your ticket and selling a book of tickets. If everyone took a book of 5 tickets and sold them it would make a huge difference and mean that as we enter senior league and championship, we do so with a sound backing behind us.
Tickets cost €20 each and the prizes are 1st €3000, 2nd €1000, 3rd €500, 4th €250, 5th €250, 6th €200 and 7th €200.

Defibrillator Course in January
A new Defibrillator course will take place in January and the organisers are urgently seeking many new people to take the opportunity of getting trained in the use of defibrillators. As this is a down time it is important that all clubs and organisations on both sides of the bridge encourage their members to attend and get trained up.
Rarely a day goes by in a workplace, sporting events or in public places that a person’s knowledge in the use of the defibrillator in not required hence the great need to have all area and events covered with people with the required knowledge.

The weather
proved to be a real spoilsport at the weekend with both the under 9 blitz and
the under 11 game versus Killoe Celtic postponed due to the inclement
conditions. League action now takes a break until the weekend of 5th/6th
January, but club activity continues regardless. The club is organizing a Bag
Pack at Dunnes Stores Longford, on this Thursday 20th from 11am to 8pm. Anyone
willing to help out for an hour please contact Karl at 087 6872702. The club in
conjunction with St. Faithleach’s will be holding a novelty charity/AstroTurf fundraiser
football match at Ballyleague on St. Stephens Day.
The past year has certainly proved to be an eventful one for
Ballyboro FC with a highlight being the granting of Planning Permission for the
Astroturf pitch. The coming year promises to be just as momentous with a
significant OscaRs project in the pipeline. Mark Tarmey will be busy over the
Christmas period keeping track of the remaining entries for the Last Man Standing
project.

The club would like to wish everyone a very special and wonderful Christmas. We thank all our players, members and friends and supporters for your support and help throughout the year. County Panel
Presently the Longford county team are flying high in the Bord na Mona O’Byrne Cup and it is great to see that the new team management rewarded five of our players with a call up to the county training panel. We wish Liam Connerton, Shane Kenny, Shane Donohoe, Iarla O’Sullivan and Dáithí Mulvihill the very best and look forward to seeing them in action in the county jersey in 2019. We also wish the county team the very best for the year ahead.

The club needs people that are interested in helping out the club by completing the defibrillator course to take place in January. The need for people to have training done in the use of the defibrillator is essential at all grades especially with all the games and training in Clonbonny.
