Brigid on Virgin Media
As you all know and have seen from her fantastic work Brigid Mullooly is renowned for her camera work of the locality. Brigid has the eye for beauty and her extraordinary photography are things of outstanding beauty.
Brigid’s work was recognised nationally when she was selected one of three in the Virgin Media Ireland AM camera club final. Unfortunately, Brigid did not win the main prize but it was wonderful to see her on TV discussing her photograph and having it acknowledged nationally.
Well done Brigid.
Strange week in our community
What is strange generally means it is not good and the news that broke really numbed our community.
The news early in the week that Farrell’s Gala shop was closing stunned us all but to learn that in addition to it the Agri store, the fuel shop was also closing on 17th November. It is a sad day for the community as for as long as can be remembered the Farrell’s shop attached to Ger’s/Adie’s bar at the corner was there. It was the mainstay for the many families down through the hard times when Lanesboro was starting to grow with the emergence of Bord na Mona and ESB. There were legendary stories of the shop and indeed legendary staff there. Alas it will be no more, and Lanesboro’s Main Street and the entire community will be the poorer by its absence to us townies and country people alike. We wish the entire Farrell family, Adie, Josephine, Lorraine and Gerald the very best of luck into the future.
That news was swiftly followed by the announcement from Bord na Mona of the company will be shedding jobs over the next couple of years. Since the early 50’s Bord na Mona has been in our community and the surrounding communities. It has been one of the mainstays along with ESB of our developing area since the 50’s and indeed made us a thriving town right up to recent times.
This was news that we all knew was on the way due to the lifespan of the bog, but it was the without any future plan for our communities being mooted or even put in place that created the greatest shock. While there are many that the voluntary will suit there are many more that it will not suit, and the dramatic decrease of seasonal workers will leave a tremendous lack of money in the community and for the many students the underlying case of no money for accommodation etc. in third level towns.
While Bord na Mona has been so great for us for over 60 years they need to urgently put plans in place for jobs to be created in our area immediately. We must have redeployment to new jobs locally rather than men young and older that have many good working years ahead of them losing work.
Our community has been hit hard over the past week and we must rise together to develop and create a working environment for the next of our younger generation giving them the option to live work and play in their own community and help it grow.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to former Mahoraveen Mary Dennigan, her brothers Mike and Willie, Mahoraveen and their families on the death of Mary’s husband Jean Claude Bohin, Lievin, France recently.

Out of Town News
For too long the news from me has been going only one way – informing everyone out of the area as to what is happening in their own and former community.
I am now inviting everyone that has a connection, even a tenuous one, to the Lanesboro, Ballyleague towns, the Rathcline and Kilgefin parishes to share their family news with us. In the recent past we had a birth in Canada (congratulations, again, Martin and Emma) followed a week later by a death also, as it happens, in Canada of the late Pat Monaghan and it is great to be able to share the out of town news with everyone.
You can email me on joea@iol.ie and I would love to hear from you.
Have you a Recipe?
The Rathcline GAA Annual ‘Cake Fare’ that will take place on Sunday 9th December in St. Marys Parish Hall is seeking your help in collecting recipes you may have and that you may like to share them. The idea is to produce a collection with all your recipes included and, on the 9th December, it is intended to launch a collection of recipes gathered from around Rathcline parish. This idea has really taken off and a host of people have already shared their recipes. Recipes have been flowing in and as the closing date for the recipes is fast approaching it is very important that you, if you wish to share your recipe, get your recipe in as quickly as possible.
In recent years there has been a great shift to the number of men cooking and baking and the committee would love to hear from them as well as all the ladies that are continually creating great food and confectionery from their chosen recipes.
If you would like to have your favourite recipe or indeed an old family one included in the publication, simply handwrite or type it up and leave it in to Joe or Martina O’Brien or you can contact Pat Connerton on 0861617501 or Michelle Connerton on 0861699466.
Without doubt there are surely a huge number of recipes handed down safely stowed away in presses, drawers and attics. Now is the time to dust them off and share them with us. Thanking you in advance.
With time closing in for the printing of the booklet you are asked to get your recipes to us as soon as possible as we will have the booklet available for the Cake Fare
The club is looking forward to hearing from everybody with a connection to our parish and we look forward to adding your recipe into the publication.

Defibrillator Course and Refresher
In the very near future there will be a new defibrillator and defibrillator refresher course commencing. There is a great need for new people to learn the use of the defibrillator and there are a number of people that their refresher course is now due. We all know the importance of the knowledge in the use of a defibrillator and how your knowledge can and will save a life when you are called upon to use your training.
If you want to do the upcoming course leave your name in with Martina O’Brien at the shop, phone 043 332107/086 2460840; email martinaclyne1@gmail.com
