On Winning Streak
Many congratulations to Mrs. Mary Lohan who on Saturday night last was drawn out to be on the next Winning Streak Television programme. With next weekend being a Bank Holiday weekend, the next airing of this popular programme will be Saturday week 3rd November when Mary will be on our screens. We wish Mary the very best of luck and we hope that the three multicoloured tokens will come her way and that she will have the added excitement of spinning the wheel.
Out of Town News
For too long the news from me has been going only one way – informing everyone out of the area as to what is happening in their own and former community.
I am now inviting everyone that has a connection, even a tenuous one, to the Lanesboro, Ballyleague towns, the Rathcline and Kilgefin parishes to share their family news with us. In the recent past we had a birth in Canada (congratulations, again, Martin and Emma) followed a week later by a death also, as it happens, in Canada of the late Pat Monaghan and it is great to be able to share the out of town news with everyone.
You can email me on joea@iol.ie and I would love to hear from you.
Inaugural Cycle
The inaugural High Nelly Challenge took place last Sunday morning in aid of the Palliative care Unit at Roscommon Hospital.
While the event was hastily organised a number in access of 30 bikes arrived at the start at Ballyleague Hall on a varied array of bicycles which included 16 High Nelly of varying ages to travel the 30km route.
There is no doubt, but the cycle was most enjoyable on a wonderful morning and the craic amongst the cyclist was only mighty. A total of €615 was raised.
A special word must go to everyone that donated money, cycled and prepared food.
The route began at Ballyleague Hall through Lanesboro to Killashee onto Clondra and Tarmonbarry and back to Ballyleague.
The cheque will be presented to the Palliative Care Unit in the near future and the organisers looks forward to another and greater day out next year.
Have you a Recipe?
The Rathcline GAA Annual ‘Cake Fare’ that will take place on Sunday 9th December in St. Marys Parish Hall is seeking your help in collecting recipes you may have and that you may like to share them. The idea is to produce a collection with all your recipes included and, on the 9th December, it is intended to launch a collection of recipes gathered from around Rathcline parish. This idea has really taken off and a host of people have already shared their recipes. Recipes have been flowing in and as the closing date for the recipes is fast approaching it is very important that you, if you wish to share your recipe, get your recipe in as quickly as possible.
In recent years there has been a great shift to the number of men cooking and baking and the committee would love to hear from them as well as all the ladies that are continually creating great food and confectionery from their chosen recipes.
If you would like to have your favourite recipe or indeed an old family one included in the publication, simply handwrite or type it up and leave it in to Joe or Martina O’Brien or you can contact Pat Connerton on 0861617501 or Michelle Connerton on 0861699466.
Without doubt there are surely a huge number of recipes handed down safely stowed away in presses, drawers and attics. Now is the time to dust them off and share them with us. Thanking you in advance.
Can you get your recipes to us as soon as possible as we will have the booklet available for the Cake Fare?
The club is looking forward to hearing from everybody with a connection to our parish and we look forward to adding your recipe into the publication.

Astro Turf
Plans were unveiled this week for a new initiative to develop an astro turf soccer pitch for the benefit of all the children of Lanesborough, Ballyleague and students of the local secondary school and adults of the entire community. The pitch is badly needed because the existing field at the track at Lanesborough Community College, which has served the school and the community well over the decades, now suffers from heavy flooding in Winter time and is unplayable a lot. The astro project will cost up to €200,000 and is being undertaken by a voluntary committee set up by Ballyboro soccer club and the Longford Westmeath Education and Training Board who own the land at LCC.
The committee is made up of all local lads and lassies from Lanesborough & Rathcline, Kilgefin and Ballyleague: Jason Fallon, Stephen Rooney, Eddie Kelly, Seamus Sorohan, Karl Crawford, Mark Tarmey, Lee Cullen, Ann McGloin, Ronnie Johnston, Eamon Bolger, Kevin Connaughton, John Tynan, Ciaran Mullooly, Carol Donlon, Kieran Feeney.
The committee has a number of major fundraising initiatives at the planning stage for 2019 but will only be holding smaller events before Christmas while other major events in the area are underway. The first small event – a TABLE QUIZ NIGHT – is aimed at attracting support from all the families of all students of Lanesborough Community College and all the parents & grandparents & friends of all the team players with Ballyboro soccer club. This Table quiz will be held at Rosie’s Bar (Sorohan’s) in Ballyleague on Friday night next October 26th next at 9.30pm. Ballyboro
Last week was a momentous one for the
club as the license agreement was signed for the new Astroturf pitch. This
facility will be of enormous benefit to the club, the local schools, and the
wider community in the future. However, much funds need to be raised in the
interim to make this opportunity a reality. With this in mind the club is
staging a Table Quiz in Rosie’s, Ballyleague on this Friday 26th at 9.30, and
the club is hoping that this venture will greatly supported by parents of the
players, and also by parents of the students of Lanesboro Community College, as
well as the general public.
On the playing fields it was a busy weekend with four teams
in action. First involved were the under 13s. A stunning hat trick by Eoin Cox
in the early stages set the team on the road to victory, and further goals by
Christian Donlon (2), Joey Trimble (1), and Euan Cullen (1) saw the team win by
7 goals to 2. Team: Sam Glennon, Rory Carling, Jack Casey, Cormac O’Dowd, Josh
Crawford, Christian Donlon, Euan Cullen, Conor Farrell, Alex Forde, Eoin Cox,
Joey Trimble. subs: James Mimnagh, Christov, and Luke Cullen.
The under 12s continued their recent run of good form when
they got the better of Killoe Celtic by 7 goals to 2. Christian
Donlon with 3, and one each from Daniel Hogan, Jack Casey, Ben Murphy and
Euan Cullen saw the Ballyboro lads emerge as comfortable winners. Line out:
Ronan Cox, Anthony Cox, Jack Casey, David Cox, Euan Cullen, Christian Donlon,
Ethan Slattery, Ben Murphy, Billy Murray. subs: Daniel Hogan, Conn Maxwell,
Luke Johnston, Jack Beattie, Aidan Kelly, Adam Farrell.
Considering it was their first game of the season the under
16s started impressively against Newtown and were ahead 2-1 at the
interval with Jack Murray and Eoin Farrell the goal scorers. However, Newtown
largely dominated the second half and won by a 5-2 margin. Ballyboro; Jack
Madigan, Ryan Murphy, Oisin Kenny, Kevin McDonagh, Cormac Casey, Jack Murray,
Conor Gannon, Eoin Farrell, Shane Killian, Chris O’Loughlin, Cillian Cox. subs:
Callum Gordon, Niall Fisher.
The under 14s found the going tough against a superior Inny Rovers
team, and though they tried hard they were well beaten by an impressive Inny
outfit. Ballyboro: Briain Farrell, Luke Dowd, Paul Byrne, Ryan Byrne, Jack
McGloin, Matthew Heneghan, Shane Ross, Sam Murphy, Ciaran O’Dowd, Christy
Burke, Bryan Mullooly. subs: Conor Farrell, Cormac O’Dowd.
Thanks are due to Duncan Murphy, Donal Hogan, and Gary
Beattie who have agreed to take charge of the under 8s, under 9s, and under 10s
respectively.
Fixtures: The under 8s will be involved in a blitz at
home on Saturday commencing at 11am. The under 10s are at home to Ardagh on
Saturday with the kick off at 12 noon. The under 12s are away to Castlepollard
on Sunday 1pm. The under 13s play Westport United away on Saturday in the third

Recipes for Rathcline
Rathcline GAA Club will once again be holding their Annual ‘Cake Fare’ on Sunday 9th December in St. Marys Parish Hall.
On that day we intend to launch a collection of recipes gathered from around Rathcline parish. If you would like to have your favourite recipe or indeed an old family one included in the publication, simply handwrite or type it up and leave it in to Joe or Martina O’Brien or you can contact Pat Connerton on 0861617501 or Michelle Connerton on 0861699466. Like the football it is “Minor, Senior, ladies and Gents”. The club is hoping to collect a huge number of old recipes and if you can get them to us as soon as possible so that we can have the booklet ready for our Cake Fare. Looking forward to hearing from everybody and especially adding your recipe into the publication.
The revised schedule of games has been agreed with CCC Longford commenced last weekend. There are many hugely important games in this schedule and it is very important that there is a huge support for the teams throughout. You will see two finals with the prospects of others and we hope for a brilliant finish to the 2018 season. ‘Be with us Be there’.
Correction
Last week in these very notes I stated that Rathcline would be playing Naomh Éanna in the Leinster Championship as I read on the Wexford GAA site. There are two Intermediate championships in Wexford and the winners of their ‘A Championship’, Naomh Éanna, play in the Leinster Junior. We will instead be playing the winners of Horeswood who won the Intermediate Championship on Saturday last or Kilkenny champions Mullinavat who meet on Saturday next. The game will most likely be played in New Ross or Nolan Park, Kilkenny.
Support if you can
This Saturday night 27th October our neighbours St Brigid’s GAA Killashee are holding a race night in The Richmond Inn Clondra. A great night guaranteed. If you can go, we are asking you to go along and support

The following Friday 2nd November the promotion relegation playoff will take place when we will take on Granard and a win here will see us playing Division 1 football in 2019. On Saturday 10th November we will make the journey to Wexford/Kilkenny for the Quarter Final of the Leinster Intermediate championship with a 1.30pm throw-in. The following Friday night we will play the U20 Championship Final at a venue yet to be decided at 8.30pm. The semi-final of the Leinster Intermediate will take place on Saturday 24th November at 1.30pm, this will be an away game against the winners of the Offaly/Wicklow Quarter Final.
