Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Monday 10th September 2018

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Death

On Thursday 6th September last one of the bastions of our community passed away at the home of her daughter Martina on Main Street. Kathleen Harold was in her 98th year, our oldest resident, who was predeceased some 23 years ago by her late husband Tommy and her daughter Ita who died at birth. Kathleen lived at the crossroads at Rathcline most commonly known as Harold’s Cross where she ran a successful shop and was the focal point of our community right up to very recent times. Since her passing away Kathleen’s name has been in the thoughts and on the lips of so many people. She affected so many lives in so many positive ways and her passing is leaving a great number of sad hearts in our community. We are all left the poorer by her death, but her memory will live long in our hearts and minds. Kathleen had been a hard-working lady throughout her life working hand in hand with her late husband Tommy in the many different sectors from the shop, school runs to post collections and in their love of horses and she was also a great support in his love of boxing along with raising her nine daughters. Kathleen was a deeply religious lady and was to be seen at Mass right up to last Saturday week.  She took wonderful pride in her garden which she maintained in pristine condition. The attendance at the reposing of her remains in Martina’s home on Saturday and again at her Funeral Mass in St. Marys church bore ample testimony to the esteem in which Kathleen was held. She was laid to rest alongside her husband Tommy in Clonbonny cemetery. To her daughters Mary, Sr. Rosaleen, Irene, Nuala, Evelyn, Geraldine, Bernie, Florence and Martina we extend our heartfelt sympathy.

Taste of the Lakelands

The Taste of the Lakelands will take place again this year on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th October. Previous years has been a tremendous success and the taste of the Lakelands is continuing to grow. I am sure that this year will bring bigger attendances to Lanesboro for the weekend. There will once again be a huge number of stands from all parts of the Lakeland area displaying their products.

Championship Games

What a weekend it was for both the Rathcline and St. Faithleach’s teams.

St. Faithleach’s kicked off the wonderful Saturday when they produced a fabulous performance in the home ground of the unbeaten Elphin to emerge with a 0-11 point to 0-8 victory. Manager Gareth Johnston and his fellow mentors have done an excellent job and their expectation of a long championship run was well warranted.

On Sunday next 16th September in Ballyleague St. Faithleach’s will play St. Croan’s at 3.30pm and it where everyone in the community should be as a victory in this game will see St. Faithleach’s into the Roscommon Senior Championship Quarter Final. Let’s make it our business to be there.

Later on Saturday evening last Rathcline carried on their excellent form into the semi-final where they took on Drumlish in the Intermediate semi-final. A win here would leave them one step away from winning the Intermediate championship back to back. Manager Liam Tully and his selectors had the team rightly primed for this game and Rathcline emerged comfortable winners on a scoreline of 2-14 to 0-9. The final is set for Pearse Park on Sunday week 23rd September with a 4pm throw in.
