Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Taste of the Lakelands

The Taste of the Lakelands will take place again this year on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th October. Previous years has been a tremendous success and the taste of the Lakelands is continuing to grow. I am sure that this year will bring bigger attendances to Lanesboro for the weekend. There will once again be a huge number of stands from all parts of the Lakeland area displaying their products.

Engagement

Many congratulations to Thomas Reynolds son of Ita and the late Brendan Reynolds, Cloontuskert and Nicola Prentice, daughter of Tam and Elizabeth Prentice, Hamilton, Scotland who announced their engagement last weekend.

School Reunion

50th anniversary/gathering.

There was a great turnout of classmates from 1968 on Sat to celebrate the 50th anniversary of starting their secondary school education at Lanesboro Vocational School. It was fantastic to meet up with so many from the good old days. In many cases bigger waistlines and less hair but still the same old gang and it was wonderful to see all making the effort to travel to the occasion.

On the day those attending remembered classmates who sadly have passed away, 14 in total.

The attendees also remember former teachers who have also passed away.

Today three of their teachers are thankfully alive and well, namely Ollie Fleming, Gabrielle Farrell and Tom Nohilly and a highlight of the day was having Tom in attendance with his wife Margaret. Tom is a wealth of knowledge and his recall is amazing. The golden anniversary class wish you, Tom, many more years of health and happiness.

A special thanks to School Principal M/s Bernice Martin who totally supported the idea and was of great help as was School Secretary Breda Maguire. It is great to meet people like this who are so helpful and positive. There have been many negative responses with ideas such as this in the past, so Bernice and all at Lanesboro Community College take a bow.

Thank You

The defibrillator group held their annual Church Gate collection recently in Lanesboro and Ballyleague and they would like to sincerely thank everyone for their contributions. The amount contributed came to €692.

Wedding

The marriage took place at St. Patrick’s Church, Bryansford, Co. Down on 16th August of Joseph Coghlan, son of Paul and Ann Coghlan, Barnacor and Anne-Marie Mc Fall daughter of Joseph and Geraldine Mc Fall, Newcastle, Co. Down. Bestman was Tommy Mc Dermott, friend of the groom and groomsmen were Caoibhín Nealon, Stephen Masterson and Frankie Duffy friends of the groom. Chief Bridesmaid was Gráinne Flanagan, and bridesmaids were Melissa Coghlan, sister of the groom, Martina Flanagan and Ciara mc Ilroy.

The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Jim Crudden. The wedding reception was held in the Four Seasons, Carlingford.

Championship Games

Both local clubs will play in their respective championships this coming weekend. For the Intermediate Championship semi-final Rathcline will travel to Pearse Park to take on Drumlish in what promises to be a tights game. A few weeks back they met in the league and it proved to be an absorbing game. The game will take place on Saturday next in Pearse Park at 5pm.

St. Faithleach’s will take on Elphin in a vital Senior Championship game in Elphin on Saturday next at 3pm when they will take on Elphin. A victory will put them right into the mix for a place in the final stages of the Roscommon Senior Championship.

We wish both teams the very best of luck on Saturday. While the fixture scheduling does not allow us to go to both games I would urge all local supporters to go along and support our local teams.

Death

The news of the death at her home on Sunday 26th August of Mrs Evelyn Gannon, Mountdillon brought a great deal of sadness to the entire area. Evelyn was predeceased by her late husband Johnie. She was a member of an old and respected family in the parish of Kilgefin. Evelyn was a lady of great spirit and in recent times did not let her illness daunt her. She had the determination to fight right to the end supported greatly by her loving family. Evelyn reared a large family and she was an outgoing lady and she enjoyed all the travel that entailed by having a large family. She was a regular at the local Ballyleague bingo every Thursday night. Evelyn was a great supporter of everything local and loved to see success in the younger generations. Her absence in the Mountdillon and the wider area will be sadly missed but her inimitable smile and cheeriness will live long in our memories and will be sadly missed. Her funeral was both large and representative. Her remains reposed at McHugh’s Funeral Home, Strokestown on Tuesday last. On Wednesday she was removed to St. Cecilia’s Church, Curraghroe for her Funeral Mass and following Mass her remains were laid to rest in Scramogue cemetery.

To her sons Tom, John, and Peter, daughters Maureen, Eileen, Catherine, Martina, Elizabeth, Beatrice and Colette, sisters Rita and Bridget, relatives and many friends we extend our deepest sympathy.

With Center Parcs opening in County Longford and Fáilte Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands campaign, tourism is set to be one of the main employers in the region. Students who complete level 5 can seek employment or progress to level 6 and gain direct entry into year 2 of degree programmes in Athlone Institute of Technology. Underage

Last week was a remarkable week for the underage section of the club with tremendous victories for both our Minor and Juvenile teams.

Monday our minors travelled to Granard to play the semi final of the Championship Division 2 against a very strong and fancied Granard/Ballymore side. It was a great game of football, between two wholehearted teams, as the scoreline suggests 3-13 to 1-14. We will now face either Carrick Sarsfields or Mostrim in the final at a date to be determined.

Our Juvenile team competed in Division 1 for the first time in a while and returned to the top grade with a tremendous victory over Granard/Ballymore. This again was a great game between two hugely committed sides who gave their all and there is no doubt, but these two sides will meet again in the latter stages of the competition. The scoreline was 3-10 to 2-6 does reflect the tightness and sublimity of both sides in their quest for victory.
