Lough Ree Monster Festival
The Lough Ree Monster Festival will take place this year from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th August.
This year there is an added attraction of the Monster Jiving Champion. Jiving will take place on Sunday night with €300 in prizes. It promises to be a memorable night
The Festival will commence on with a special event organised by the local and county library for which we are very grateful and delighted to have them onboard. Coinciding with the Lough Ree Monster Festival, Lanesboro Library will host an evening of entertainment on Thursday 9th August at 7pm. We are very excited to welcome author Jack Harte back to his old stomping ground. Jack will read from his most recent publication Rehabilitating the Serpent. Also, on the night we will have some music and light refreshments.
This is a night not to be missed!
Friday evening 10th The events Lough Ree Monster Festival will commence with the Kiddies Disco in the Big Red Barn. At 9.30pm the Lough Ree Monster will emerge from Lough Ree to moor along the Shannon banks for the weekend. The late-night music will commence at 11pm with DJ Martin who will provide music for the 80’s Disco.
Saturday 11th We will welcome back the superstar of Irish and Country Music Mike Denver who will perform on stage from 11am to 1pm. Look out for other events during the day.
Sunday 12th We will have kiddie’s fun in the Big Red Barn in the afternoon. At 9.30pm we will have the departure of the Monster and his departure will be accompanied by a firework display. Sunday night dancing will finish our weekend with music by the Conquerors and the announcement of the Lough Ree Monster Jiving Champions.
The famous Murray Amusements will be onsite all weekend adding greatly to the atmosphere.
The entire weekend will take place in the Big Red Barn and the Barn is licenced to sell alcohol.
Remembering one of our own
To celebrate and commemorate the life and death of Thomas Harold A.S.C killed by a shell near Ypres on August 12th, 1918 there will be a Service of Remembrance on Sunday next in St. John’s Church, Lanesboro at 11.30am which will feature members of the Harold family who are mainstay in our community right up to this very day.
Thomas Harold was killed at the latter stages of the First World War. His death is exactly 100 years to the date of Sunday next. Following the Service, a wreath will be laid on his grave. If you go into St. John’s Church, you will see the plaque erected by parishioners in his memory.
All our community are invited to go along and be part of the commemoration and remembrance of Thomas Harold A.S.C.
Championship continues
On Sunday next the Rathcline march continues towards a place in qualifying for the Intermediate semi-final. With their victory on Sunday last over Grattan’s they have now booked a place in the quarter final and a victory on Sunday evening would ensure a place in the semi-final. The game on Sunday against Ballymore will take place in Drumlish at 6.30pm and we wish the team and management the best of luck.
St. Faithleach’s will return to Roscommon Senior championship football on Saturday week 18th August when thy take on Padraig Pearse’s at St. Dominic’s grounds, Knockrockery. Having been unbeaten in the first two games another victory will leave them in a strong position to reach the final stages. Fix the date in your diary and go along and cheer them on.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Margaret and John Jordan and family, The Green on the death of Margaret’s sister Winnifred Lyons, Rathmines, Dublin recently.
Fundraising Barbeque
Clarke’s Bar are hosting their annual Fundraising Barbeque at their premises on Sunday week 19th August commencing at 5pm. The funds raised will go to the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation. Music on the evening will be provided by Brian Ross, Jimmy Hussey and friends.
Fun Run/Walk
The Rathcline Ladies GAA club will hold a Run/Walk to raise funds for new gear for the players and they are seeking your support. The Fun Run/Walk will take place on Saturday 25th August and registration will take place from 10.30am in the Rathcline GAA clubhouse. The distances vary from 500m right up to 4k.
We would urge everyone in the community, their family and friends to take part or just contribute an entry fee. Every euro will be greatly appreciated and the club looks forward to seeing a great crowd out on the day.
Lough Ree 2000 Bridge

Kayak Camp on Monday
The last kids Kayak Camp before the return to school will take place from Monday next13th to Thursday 16th August. The camp will take place from 10am to 1pm each day. All gear except for wetsuits will be provided – old shorts and top will do. The camp is for young people aged between 10 and 17 years and the cost for the camp is €60. Mass and Blessing of the Graves
On Sunday next 12th August there will be Mass and Blessing of the Graves at 6pm in Cloontuskert Cemetery. The annual collection for maintenance of the graveyard will also take place.
Golf Students
Strokestown Gold Club invites you to their club for a two-Day Golf Summer Camp on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th August.
Ages 8 to 12 will take place at 1-am while 12 and older will be at 11am.The fee is €20 per child and the tuition is for both girls and boys. Tuition will be by registered professional. If you are interested contact Martin Crinigan 087 9125996 or Margaret Walsh 087 2984994.

Lanesborough Gun Club
The AGM to be held on Friday night next 10th Aug at 9pm sharp in Adie’s meeting room. All members are asked to attend.

€13,100 Tidy Towns
The Lanesboro Tidy Towns Lottery draw took place on Tuesday morning last. There was no winner of the €13,000 jackpot and the jackpot, for this week, will now rise to €13,100. The numbers drawn were 3, 12, 25 and 28. The winner of the €50 prize was Cillian and Senan Cox, Curraghrua and the three €20 prizes were won by Martini c/o Mags, Mary Ghee, Lanesboro Post Office, and S. Partridge, Terlicken, Ballymahon.

The group will continue every Wednesday morning at 10.30am. All welcome to come along and interact with other children ages 0-4 yrs., play with our Lego table/building blocks, toy box, colouring tables and hear a story or two!

During July & August, we will have a Family Fun Morning each Saturday 10am – 12noon in the library. There will be Craft Table, Retro Games Table, Jigsaws, Dress-up Box, Lego Table and Colouring Tables.

Summer Stars at Lanesboro Library
Summer Stars reading programme is running in Lanesboro Library from July 1st to August 31st. Each child who registers will join in the fun of reading lots of exciting books during the Summer. Children will receive their own Summer Stars Reading Card to record their progress and fun rewards will be provided along the way!

Healthcare Monitoring in Your Home
Shannonside Digital Skills are putting together a new plan for a pilot scheme in the Lanesborough Ballyleague area in the coming months.
The scheme will allow 20 people who suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, COPD or other chronic illness to decide themselves to have their critical daily medical readings monitored by the use of new technology in the comfort of their own home through the use of broadband. These readings will then be monitored in conjunction with a specialised nurse service so that any healthcare readings of concern will be brought to the attention of the person immediately and action proposed.
This pilot project is now only at developmental stage. Participation will be purely on a voluntary basis for each person (10 from Ballyleague and 10 from Lanesborough) and each person who volunteers must firstly fill out a questionnaire and consult with their own GP.

Distilling revival in Lanesboro
On Saturday week last there was a huge amount of tractor movement up and down the town and there were lots of mention of increased activity further down the town, I took a walk myself to investigate.
And what a sight. The long-awaited development of Lough Ree Distillery is underway at the Old Post Office site and in one day a mountain has been moved such is the clearance at the site. Promoters behind the company, locals Peter and Michael Clancy and their sister Sheila Mullen, have also set up a temporary home across the road in the premises which until recently was Terry’s Butcher shop. There they have created the regions first legal distillery in almost 200 years.
Talking me through their new German still, and explaining what an intriguing process is, Michael pointed out the various stages in development of the Distillery’s first product, a Gin, to be launched at the Taste of the Lakelands in Oct. It’s fascinating, and wonderful to think that this is happening right here in Lanesboro, on our own doorstep.
The next twelve months will be massive for this business and for Lanesboro as a whole, as Lough Ree Distillery’s products get launched and the main distillery moves deeper into construction and completion. We can only admire their endeavour and assure them of the continued support of the people of Lanesboro in this brave venture.
Information Evening
On Monday 13th August 2018 in Longford Rugby from 4pm to 7pm there will be an Information Evening for School Leavers/Back to Education/People with Learning Difficulties and Mature Part Time Students. The aim of the evening is to provide students and their parents with the necessary information and support they will need after receiving their Leaving Certificate results. Minister for Higher Education, Mary Mitchell O’Connor will be in attendance, along with other guest speakers who will be available to answer any questions.

A one-day pilgrimage to Lough Derg will take place on Sunday week 19th August. The bus will leave Kenagh at 6.40pm and its route will take it through Derryhaun, Ballyleague, Scramogue and Rooskey. For any enquiries you are asked to contact Mary at 043-3321969.

Blood Donation Clinic
If you missed the opportunity to donate blood in Longford at the Irish Blood Transfusion Service in the Longford Arms Hotel then you have the opportunity once again in the Abbey Hotel Roscommon on Tuesday 21st, Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd August.
Blood donations during holiday time decreases and it is very important that blood donations rise at this time of the year such is the increased demands for blood for so many reasons especially the amount of accidents that occour.

Championship:
On Sunday last our Intermediate team by virtue of their 2-14 to 0-4 victory over Grattan’s in Cashel put us within shouting distance of the semi-final of the Intermediate championship. Next Sunday we play Ballymore in Drumlish at 6.30pm and this game will decide whether we go straight through to the semi-final or must play a quarter final – victory here or a draw will put us into the semi-final. We suffered a few injuries on Sunday and we hope that they will be cleared up before Sunday.
While the scoreline was comprehensive the actual game was far from that and Grattan’s made us fight for everything we got. A major improvement from now on is important if we are to retain the Intermediate championship.
