Lanesboro Ballyleague notes Monday 25th June 2018

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Looking forward to a Night at the Dogs

As you know the Night at the Dogs will take place at Longford Greyhound Track on Friday night week 6th July. Lanesboro and Ballyleague always bring a great night of excitement to Longford Greyhound track any night they are there. We look forward to a bumper crowd coming along for a fabulous night out. Tickets are on sale costing €10 each and you are encouraged to buy yours and come along to enjoy a night out at the dogs. Tickets are on sale from Catherine Kelly, Joe O’Brien, Mike Greene, James O’Flaherty, Caroline Gray, Tracy Gray, Teresa Ormsby, in local shops and bars.

Siblings Retire

By a strange quick of coincidence former local residents of the Green Geraldine (Gillooley) and her brother Val Kirwan will both retire from their positions of work on this coming Friday 29th June. Geraldine has worked for over 40 years with the HSE and the Department of Social Protection where she was the Community Welfare officer in Lanesboro, Killashee, Newtownforbes and Longford Town areas.

Val on the other worked for Bord na Mona before moving to America and settling in San Francisco where he was a member of the police Department there. Indeed, Val welcomed many locals to San Francisco when he was stationed at the main airport where himself and his police dog Gilbey were very prominent.

We would like to wish both a long and happy retirement with great health.

Winner get €300

Buster tickets for the Buster Race at the Night at the Dogs are on sale at €2 each and you have the chance of winning €300 if you have the correct finishing combination.

County Community Games Finals

Thank you to all the 22 participants whom took part in the County Community Games Track & Field County Finals, in Ballymahon last weekend. They all performed really well and are a huge credit to Lanesborough. We are very proud of them all.

Thank you also, to all the parents who helped out on the day and throughout the year. A special Thank you to Margaret Mullooly for Managing the team on the day and also for preparing and training many of the participants, in advance of these finals. Her coaching, help and advice are second to none. She has been a lynchpin in so many of our athletic successes, not only on Sunday last, but down through the years. It was also great to see Fabian Walsh supporting our participants from the sidelines. He has been there for generations of Lanesborough athletes.

A huge thank you also to Ciara Myhill, Donal Hogan and Barry Hogan whom do a lot of, behind the scenes work, throughout the year for the Lanesborough Community Games. Without them, there would be no Lanesborough Community Games. They are greatly appreciated.

Well done to the following participants whom were placed in their event: Laura Rhatigan (2nd Place Girls U8 80 metres), Rian Hogan (1st Place  U10 Boys 60metre Hurdles), Cormac O’Dowd (2nd Place U12 Boys 100metres), Kieran O’Dowd (1st Place U14 Boys Long Jump), Josie Myhill (1st Place U14 Girls Long Jump), Roisin Brennan (1st Place U16 Girls Discus), Caoilinn Flood (1st Place U16 Girls High Jump), Aoife Nolan (2nd Place U16 Girls 200m), The U13 Mixed Relay Team 1st Place (Kieran O’Dowd, Polly Myhill, Cormac O’Dowd, Josie Myhill) and The U16 Girls Relay Team 2nd Place (Caoilinn Flood, Aoife Nolan, Roisin Brennan, Ella Hogan).

Lough Ree Athletic Club

Sunday last 24th, saw several of our young athletes represent Lanesborough at the annual Co Longford Community Games Finals which were held at the GAA grounds in Ballymahon.

Results to hand (some of the medal winners) include the following, with full results later.

U/8 Girls – 80m – 2nd Laura Rattigan

U/10 Boys – Hurdles – 1st Rian Hogan

U/12 Boys – 100m – 2nd Cormac O’Dowd

U/13 Mixed Relay – 1st – Cormac O’Dowd, Kieran O’Dowd, Polly Myhill, Josie Myhill

U/14 Girls – Long Jump – 1st Josie Myhill

U/16 Girls – Discus – 1st Roisin Brennan

U/16 Girls – 200m – 2nd Aoife Nolan

U/16 Girls – High Jump – 1st Caoilinn Flood

U/16 Girls – Relay – 2nd Caoilinn Flood, Roisin Brennan, Aoife Nolan, and Ella Hogan

Surprise of the day must be Rian Hogan in the boys under 10 hurdles, however this scribe has been advised that Rian predicted he would take gold.  The hard luck story of the day has to be Óisin Dillon.  Óisin was leading the field in the 100m boys under 10 when he took a tumble, that didn’t stop him though, he dusted himself off and continued to the finish line and the  good news is that  he is under 10 again next year.

Well done to all who took part, you did us proud and we all enjoyed seeing you do your best for your parish.

Good Luck

Good luck to Roscommon Minor Ladies and local St. Faithleach girls Sarah Scally, Marie Kelly, Ellen Irwin, Kate McPhilips and Jennifer Brennan in the All-Ireland Minor Semi Final on Saturday next 30th June.
