Horse Fair this Saturday
The traditional Horse Fair re-enactment will return to the street on Saturday next 12th May. The organising committee have worked very hard to get the Fair up and running. The Fair Day will take place from 9am until 2pm. The Best Horse of the Fair over the years has been a very prestigious award and this year the Horse Fair committee is indebted to Patsy Leavy for his most generous sponsorship of the Best Horse of the Fair award.
The hard work and graft of the Fair day committee really deserves a huge crowd to come along and enjoy the Fair Day of Lanesboro. The fact that the horses are back on the street from the corner up to the church means that the fair is more family friendly with access along the footpath and full vision of the horses. Everyone is asked to play their part and obey the new and strict parking regulations and the directions of the stewards.
Come along and make the Lanesboro Fair Day a fabulous occasion once again and make it a place where former residents of Lanesboro return to meet old friends and relive the memories of the Fair day of Lanesboro.
Midsummers Day with the Stars
The annual Midsummers day with the Stars will tale place at Roscommon Racecourse on Sunday 24th June. Year on year this county music festival continues to grow and attracts an attendance from all parts of the country. It is a local festival and it is not too often we get talent such as those featuring so close to us and all on the one day. Featuring this year will be Nathan Carter, Robert Mizzell, Mike Denver, Patrick Feeney, Declan Nerney, Philomena Begley, Cliona Hagan, Johnny Brady and a host of other artists. The show will commence at 2pm and there will be free car parking. Admission is just €25, and tickets can be bought locally in O’Brien’s.
On Sunday night in the Abbey Hotel the Festival Dane will take place with Mike Denver and his Band will provide the music. Dancing from 9.30pm.
Rolling Stones Tickets
The very last opportunity to see the world-renowned Rolling Stones is on Thursday 15th May in Croke Park. Rathcline GAA are running a wonderful draw for 2 Premium Level tickets. This has to be the deal of the century for the lucky winners as the two tickets that will be won will cost only €2 yes one euro ach ticket.
The draw will take place on this Saturday night in Adie’s and tickets are on sale in O’Brien’s, and other outlets throughout the town or from executive members.

The Lanesboro Tidy Towns Lottery draw took place on Tuesday morning last. There was no winner of the €11,700 jackpot and the jackpot will now rise to €11,800. The numbers drawn were 15, 19, 21 and 23. The winner of the €50 prize was Niall and Keith Healy, Ballyleague and the three €20 prizes were won by Margaret Brennan c/o Mags, Therese Kelly, Lanesboro, and Aisling O’Shaughnessy, c/o Xlntee.
Monster meeting this Wednesday
Wednesday night next 9th May the organising committee of the Lough Ree Monster Festival will meet in St. Mary’s Parish Hall, Lanesboro at 9.15pm. The committee is always looking for new ways of creating new and innovative ways of making the Festival unique and inclusive for all.
The group are always looking for new people, new ideas, and new people to make the Lough Ree Monster Festival bigger and better than anything gone before. Please do come along, we invite people from the parishes of Rathcline, Cashel, Killashee, Clondra, Kenagh, Kilgefin, Lanesboro and Ballyleague. Share your idea and develop it into something special.
Celebrating 30 years Recording
Local musician Frank Nelson will this year celebrate 30 years of recording. Frank and his band are very popular on the music circuit and he travels with his unique and distinct sound far and wide throughout the country. A number of years he penned the song ‘Little Town on the Shannon’ about Lanesboro where he lamented the loss of “Eddie’s Cinema”.
As part of his celebration Frank will be hosting a wonderful weekend 28th, 29th and 30th September in the Abbey Hotel in Donegal Town. Such is the line-up that accommodation will be booked out early so early booking is definitely advisable. Fr Ted Comes to Town
The Shannon Gaels Minor Club will host a production of ‘Fr. Ted comes to Town’ in St. Mary’s Hall on Saturday night 2nd June. The play has been written by local man Colin Fayne and this is without doubt a production not to be missed. This is Colin’s first venture in playwriting and it is a fabulous first script.

Wedding
The marriage of Martina Dennigan daughter of Willie and Kathleen Dennigan, Mahoraveen and Brian Mc Gowan son of Liam and Mary McGowan, Cartrons, Longford took place at St. Mary’s Church Lanesboro on Friday last 4th May. Chief Bridesmaid was Kathryn Dennigan, sister of the bride and the bridesmaids were Marie Dennigan, sister in law of the bride and Aisling Trimble friend of the bride. Bestman was David Mc Gowan, brother of the groom and the groomsmen were Dessie Connolly and Stephen Percival both friends of the groom. The Pageboy was Tommy Dennigan nephew of the bride and the Flower girl was Kate O’Hara nice of the groom. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Reilly assisted by Fr. Mc Govern. The wedding reception was held in the Landmark Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon.
We would like to wish the happy couple many years of wedded happiness.

Life Celebration
A few years ago, we had the pleasure of having Rev. Canon Liz McElhinney as spiritual leader for the St. John’s congregation as part of her extended parish. Liz proved to be a great spiritual leader and also a great friend to so many from both churches in Lanesboro.
Due to ill health she had to return to her native Lurgan. Sadly, she passed away on 13th June 2017.
To celebrate the Life and Ministry of Liz McElhinney there will be an evening of music, song, and reading of her poetry in Kilbride Community Centre, Fourmilehouse on Friday week 18th may at 8pm. Performing on the night will be Cór Comáin, Sean Hanily Music group, Miriam Hunt, Siofra Cox, Carl Mc Cambley and the Convent of Mercy Chamber Choir – soloist Nicola Brown. Subscription including booklet is €10 and it is payable at the door on the night.
The proceeds will be donated to Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Restaurant and B&B
For a number of months, the Convent B&B has been closed for refurbishment. It reopened recently with all their work completed to a very high standard.
Allied to the B&B reopening Claire and Chris Webb added another string to their bow when they also opened a new restaurant Rendezvous Restaurant and it is now opened for business and it has been doing a great trade.

Hosting of Foreign Students for the year 2018-2019.
Shandon Language Solutions (SLS) will once again have a number of foreign students coming to Lanesboro Community College for upcoming year. The students will be coming for different lengths of time ranging from 8 weeks, 16 weeks, half term and full term. As usual we will be looking for the students to be housed in the local community with family’s who may have children of the same age if possible.
If you are interested in earning some extra income and being part of a very enjoyable and fulfilling experience, please call the Local SLS Coordinator at 086 3261664.

Darkness into Light
Longford will be hosting our fifth Darkness into Light Walk on Saturday next, May 12th, 2018 at 4:15am to raise much needed funds for Pieta House.
Anyone who would like to participate can do so online at dil.pieta.ie. The walk will take place in over 180 venues on 4 continents.
We are going cashless this year, so all registrations must be online, and t-shirts are posted to walkers directly.
We will be hosting community engagement events in Longford Shopping Center on Saturday 14th and Saturday 21st May to assist with registrations.

The Maria Edgeworth Literary Festival 11th – 13th May
The Edgeworth festival will be held on the weekend of 11th – 13th May. As this year is the 250th anniversary of the birth of Maria Edgeworth, the committee have put together an exciting event on Friday evening in the Manor Church, Edgeworthstown where there will be a ‘One Woman Show’ with actress Carmel O’Leary. On Saturday there will be writing workshops, a guided historical tour and anniversary concert in the Manor Church featuring Vona Groarke, Brian Leyden, Aoife Mulligan and a Comhaltas group. Maria Edgeworth loved visiting Tullynally Castle. On Sunday afternoon there will be a guided walk and talk in the Castle and an opportunity to explore the wonderful gardens. Night at the Dog’s: Our club “Night at the Dog’s” takes place on Friday 11th in Longford Greyhound track. This promises to be a great evening’s entertainment for all the family, member’s, supporters and community. First race at 8pm, tickets are available from Super value Lanesboro, Rosie’s Bar, Ballyleague or Inver Filling Station Ballyleague. Galway Races: The club has confirmed the club’s annual Race Day for Monday 30th July. This is a jewel in the club’s activities each year with the day being very special for all. With limited places available the club would advise early booking for this magnificent day. Tickets cost €120 per person and it is real value for money for all you receive on the day
Rolling Stones Draw:
In what, without doubt, will be the Concert of the Year in Croke Park, The Rolling Stones will roll back the years and perform a wonderful concert on Thursday 17th May.
Rathcline GAA have a very special draw taking place for that concert where for €2 only you could be the winner of the draw for those 2 most valuable tickets in the luxury Premium Stand.

Our U14 team lost to Grattan’s during the week. Our U16 team beat Clonguish and our U18’s lost to Killoe.
There was a great blitz in Clonbonny on Wednesday evening last with excellent numbers attending. Keep up the great work and we look forward to more youngsters in Clonbonny for training and fun.
