Fund Raising Breakfast on Sunday
Lanesboro Tidy Towns are hosting a fund-raising Breakfast Morning in St. Mary’s Hall on Sunday 22ndOctober. This is a new and very novel means of fund raising and we urge everyone to take part in the event. Breakfast will take place between 8.30am to 12.30pm and tickets cost just €10. The Tidy Town’s committee does tremendous work as everyone can see and commented on. The funds raised will help in their work to further enhance the town for you all and visitors to the area. I look forward to seeing you all there supporting.
Monster Festival Committee says Thank You
The Lough Ree Festival committee would like to thank Marese Kelly, Mary Ward, Amanda Mitchell, Collette Wyse, Joan Farrell, Dearbhail Flood, Martina O’Brien and Paula Doolan for baking cakes for the committee to sell during the Taste of the Lakelands. The committee thanks Mike Greene and Diane Walsh for standing at the stall over the two days.
Tri Club AGM
The Annual General Meeting of Lanesboro Triathlon Club for 2017 is set for Friday 3rd November at 7pm in the Club Rooms, Lanesboro Co-Op Hall.
All members have been sent an email with a nomination form, motion form and meeting agenda. Members should return the nomination form and any motions to secretary@trilanesboro.comm no later than 5pm on Fri 27th October. Fidelma (Chairperson), Niall Mulvihill (Secretary), Sinéad (Social), Frank (Treasurer) and Jim (PRO) have said they are willing to remain in their current roles, but don’t let that stop you from making your own nominations!
Other non-executive positions to be filled on the night shall include:
– Race Director 2018
– Training Officers
– Club Gear Committee
– Social Committee
It is extremely important for the clubs continued success in the future to have a large turnout at the AGM. It would be great to see new faces coming forward to take a position on the executive and bringing the club onwards and upwards.
Caretaker Required
A caretaker is required for St. Mary’s Hall. This is a CE scheme and it is 19½ hours per week. For further information you should contact the local DSP office or call Sean at 086 1427 143.
Very Generous People – Thank You
The generosity of the people of the area is truly remarkable. Your donations to the Sponsored Walk on Bank Holiday Monday in aid of the Lough Ree Monster Festival are continuing to grow and that says a lot about the community that we live in and your generosity.
The walk is a mammoth undertaking Lanesboro Bridge to Athlone Bridge and your support is truly massive. The walk will take place on Monday week 30th October. To date 3 members of the committee are walking it and 1 member who has not been on a bicycle since childhood is cycling it.
There has been an interest from people inquiring about walking all or part of the journey. Our response is “feel free to join us on all or part of the way” we would love to have you. We would ask that you take a sponsorship card and help in securing sponsorship – cards available in O’Brien’s.
There is a great interest in the walk especially the distance and my ability to walk the full journey – shur what else would you be doing on a Bank Holiday Monday only go for a little walk. Come along be a part of it and join in making it a walk of craic and chat and mentally shortening the challenge of the walk from Bridge to Bridge all 40km of it.

Rathcline in Leinster on Saturday
Rathcline will play the first round of the Leinster championship in Clonbonny on Saturday next at 2pm. They will play Kilanerin the Wexford champions who on Sunday last won a hard-fought Wexford tile in an extra time victory.
Try a Dive is Back
Have you ever thought of taking up the sport and skill of sub Aqua diving? The enjoyment and pleasure in this sport is truly magnificent and so invigorating and it can take you to many parts of the country and the world.
The search and rescue aspect of it means that you can be so helpful in recovering and rescuing people from perilous situations and bringing comfort to people.
The Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club will hold their annual Try a dive in Longford Swimming Pool at the Mall commencing this Thursday night 5th October 9pm. This is an opportunity to be availed of and not to be missed.

Considered Refereeing
Refereeing is open to men and women from the age of 18 upwards. It is something that brings great satisfaction and also allows referees to progress up the ranks to whatever level their dedication takes them.
The image of a referee being a solitary occupation does not bear anything close to reality. You are a member of a team of referees in the county where there is great comradery. You also will have your own umpires that leaves you part of another team and a leader of that team.
At the moment, there are wonderful opportunities for young referees to climb the ranks within Longford and indeed in the Leinster ranks also. Now is the time to be giving it serious consideration.
Longford has a proud record of supplying referees to Leinster and the National Refereeing panel for many years and this opportunity is waiting for you with the right application. Currently, we are very proud to have Fergal Kelly and Patrick Maguire are members of the National Referee Panel.

Defibrillator Training closing
Being able to use of the defibrillator means you have acquired lifesaving skills. Names are now being taken for the training in the use of the Defibrillator. The training is free and training will soon commence. With the evenings staring to lengthen and if you are searching for something to watch over the longer evenings and nights you could do no worse than buy the DVD of the play ‘The Lough Ree Monster’. DVDs are available in O’Brien’s costing €15and you are assured of a great couple of hours with a local cast.
Minor Club AGM
The Shannon Gaels Minor club will hold their AGM in the clubhouse in Clonbonny on Friday night next 20th October at 8pm. All parents and friends of the club are invited to come to the meeting. The club has had a very good year and this meeting is the beginning of what we hope will be as good if not a better year in 2018
Art and Craft Camp
Halloween Art and Craft camp for kids will commence on Tuesday 31st Oct until Thursday 2nd November from 10am – 2pm in St. Mary’s Hall, Lanesboro. Golf Society’s Final Season Outing
The Lough Ree Golfing Society had their final outing of 2017 in Strokestown Gold Club on Friday last. The weather was excellent and the course as usual was in wonderful condition, topped off with a terrific winning card of 39 pts by Alan Farrell.
The results of the day are 1st Alan Farrell 39pts, 2nd Jimmy Flanagan 35pts and 3rd Peter Lally 34pts. The front nine was won by Frank Conmy and the back nine by Paul Farrell. The nearest to the pin was Mick Brennan.
The ladies’ results are; 1st Bernie Taylor, 2nd Antoinette O’Donnell and 3rd Vera Whitty
The Society would like to thank Peter Lally Captain Strokestown GC for providing refreshments and for his assistance in organising the outing. When the results of the day were totted up Mick Brennan was declared winner of Golfer of the Year for 2017, this was a close contest with 3 others in contention.
The AGM was held afterwards and the entire committee all agreed to stay on for 2018, they are Captain Jackie Mc Donnell, Secretary Ronan Cullen, Treasurers Mick Brennan and Joe McGrath, ex offio Brendan Whitty.

Opening Hours
Monday 2-8pm, Tuesday 2-6pm, Wednesday 10am-1pm and 5-8pm, Thursday closed, Friday 10am-1pm and 2-5pm, Saturday 10am-1pm.
The Knitting and Crochet Group meet in the library on Mondays, 2-4pm. All welcome.
‘Babble and Books’ Baby Book club, a free weekly baby book club for parents/carers and children aged 0-2 years continues on Wednesdays at 10.15am. Sessions include songs, stories, early literacy/language games followed by a cuppa and a chance to chat with other families!
Preschool Drop In and Sing-along continues on Wednesdays at 12.30pm. Pop in to the library on your way home from preschool to join the group sing-along and choose a book with your friends.
The next ‘Chat and Chapters’ social book club will be held on Wed 18th October at 6.45pm. The group will discuss the different books they have each been reading. This is a relaxed format with no pressure to read a specific book by a deadline, but an opportunity to chat about books and get new ideas for your reading list!
Poetry and Music Hour will be held at the new time of 4.15pm on Monday 23rd October. Come along to share a favourite poem and listen to music.
Book launch: Local Author, Robert Peacock, will be launching his recently published children’s book ‘Cara and the Mystery of the Missing Ball’ in the library on Mon 23rd Oct 6.30-8.00pm. Come along to listen to a reading from the book, buy exclusive signed copies and enjoy light refreshments with a local author!
Halloween Lanterns art event: As part of this year’s Aisling children’s art festival, the library will host an art event suitable for children aged 6-9 years on Wednesday 25th October 5-6pm. This event costs €5 per child which includes all the materials to make a Halloween lantern which the children can take home. This event must be pre-booked as places are limited. Kilgefin Community Games
As the Golden Jubilee of Community Games in Ireland draws to an end, the committee for Kilgefin Community Games would like to thank everyone for their support during the year. €173.65 was raised at the Church Gate Collections in Ballagh and Curraghroe during the summer (please note collection in Ballyleague Church will take place at the end of Nov) – many thanks to all who donated so generously. A huge thank you to all the managers, trainers, mentors and parents/guardians who helped all the participants prepare for their various competitions. Once again, Kilgefin had a hugely successful year – 11 young people from our parish qualified for the National Finals in a variety of events, with 4 receiving medals at the top level as follows: Keisha Carty, Eabha Kenny & Eoin Murray (Silver Medallists in Debating) and Christian Donlon Goncalves (Bronze Medallist in 200m). We are extremely proud of their wonderful achievements and indeed of all those who took part in any community games event, whether it was at local, county or national level.
The time has now come for us to hold our AGM. This will take place in Ballyleague Hall on Monday October 23rd at 8pm. As always, we welcome new and old faces to attend. This is a great opportunity to voice any suggestions on ways of improving and promoting community games in our parish.
Finally, a word of thanks to the committee members and other helpers who made it possible for us to run community games in our parish this year. Looking forward to seeing as many people as possible on Monday.

2018 GLAS traditional farm buildings grant scheme OPEN
The Heritage Council’s 2018 GLAS Traditional Farm Building Grant Scheme is now open for applications, for suitably-eligible applicants within GLAS; the closing date is 24 November 2017. There are more details in the link below including the application form.
Key points to note:
The grants will typically be between €4000-25,000 and will form no more than 75% of the project cost. Not all eligible applications will be successful – the Heritage Council estimate that approximately 50-70 projects nationwide will be successful. The grant is not applicable to dwellings – either vacant or occupied – nor to any structure that is to be converted to domestic use. Conservation guidance and supervision will be a condition of any successful applicant; while it is not required that a conservation specialist (such as an architect, or engineer at the application stage, professional guidance will target the necessary works in the most appropriate and cost-effective way and assist in putting together a good quality application which will be more likely to be successful.
Tourism Co-Op Draw
The numbers drawn in the Lanesboro Tidy Towns lotto on Tuesday 10th October were 10, 12, 26 and 30. There was no winner of the jackpot of €8,900. The winner of the €50 prize was Tom Mullen c/o Xlntee hairdressers and the three €20 winners were Deniese Owens, Rathcline, Ester Casey, Stonepark, Longford and Kathleen& Eileen c/o Xlntee.

Children’s Arts and Crafts
Children’s Arts and Crafts classes will take place in the Waterways Ireland building in Clondra on Saturdays at 9.30am and 11.30am. Classes cost €10 – siblings less. Materials will be supplied and you are asked to wear old clothes. You can drop in on the day or phone 087-6158772.
Rathcline GAA
Leinster Club Championship: The first round of the Leinster club championship takes place in Clonbonny on Saturday next at 2pm We wish the team and management the very best of luck as we entertain Wexford champions Kilanerin who won their final on Sunday last.
It is an honour for the club to host the Leinster championship and there is great work going on to make Rathcline look in pristine condition.
The club encourages everyone to come out and support the team and welcome the Wexford champions to our club. We wish the team and management the very best of luck and look forward to having a victory.
Semi Final Win
On Friday evening last, we travelled to Cashel to take on Ballymahon in the semi-final of the Patsy Reilly Cup. It was a hum dinger of a game and one that should have put the team in tip top condition for the Leinster championship. We now await the winners of the other semi-final between Sean Connolly’s and Carrickedmond.
