St. Patrick’s Weekend in Lanesboro Ballyleague

There will be no place better to be on St. Patrick’s Weekend than in Lanesboro and Ballyleague and we would urge everyone to make it their destination for the weekend.

On St. Patrick’s Day, we do have one of the best parades in the midlands and even further afield. It is a wonderful community event where everyone partakes in the celebration. By all accounts this year promises to be bigger and better than anyone that preceded it.

This year the Lanesboro Horse Fair will take place on Saturday 18th March and at a new venue. The Fair will take place in Gill’s field, also known as Lancashire, and it is a spectacular location overlooking the harbor and bay area of the Shannon. The effect of having it in this location is that the it is a much bigger field and a much better viewing area for those looking at horses and also for those buying and selling. It is a most scenic location and to have it filled with horses will, I am sure, make it a fabulous sight.

On Saturday 18th Ballyboro Scouts will also be launching their newly converted barge. In coming weeks, you will learn of its history and work done suffice to say that this was a huge undertaking for the scouts and they are rightly proud of their achievement. It is another occasion that should not be missed and to say well done to those that have put in so much work over the past few years in preparation for this great day.

All those occasions are reasons to be in Lanesboro/Ballyleague over St. Patrick’s weekend.

Yoga for Beginners

Have you ever considered Yoga? It is a very popular form of exercise and a system for the development of the body, mind and spirit. Yoga for beginners will commence on Tuesday 28th February and continue every Tuesday for 6 weeks. There will also be a beginner’s class beginning on Thursday 2nd March at 7.30pm also for 6 weeks. Both classes will take place in Lanesboro Parish Hall.

If you would like further information or book your place you are asked to contact Lesley on 087-6507871.

The Quirky Quiz

What is the Quirky Quiz I hear you ask? It is a quiz that is so fun laden that you will have the night of your lifetime. It is a quiz that will have many varieties of questions and there, undoubtedly, will be a great number of quirky questions local, national, international and some out of this world. It is a night for everyone to take part in and it is a wonderful unique community night.

The Quirky Quiz was initially to be a single night similar to a table quiz but have created an exceptional and unique night where the Quirky Quiz will be taking place simultaneously in the four pubs in Lanesboro and Ballyleague, The Yacht Bar, Clarke’s Bar, Adie’s, and Rosie’s at the Lifebelt – there is a chance that a fifth venue will be added.

There will be one quiz master and it will be relayed in all locations. There will be prizes for the winners in each venue and an overall winning team and winning venue.

You select your team, your pub and we are up and running. There has never been anything like it and because of its uniqueness you will be part of a historic night in Lanesboro and Ballyleague and it will be a great opportunity to be part of history.

The questions will indeed be quirky and there will most definitely be a wonderful atmosphere and a great deal of craic on the night.

The date for the Quirky Quiz is set for Friday 21st April.

Pike Angling AGM

Lanesboro Pike Angling Club will hold its AGM on Wednesday 8th March at 8.30pm. The meeting will take place in the meeting room above Adie’s bar and everyone is welcome.

They would like to see a huge number of clubs, associations, businesses and individuals taking part this year. It is hoped that this year will be the biggest and best yet. Train in the use of a Defibrillator

Have you signed up for the new Defibrillator course that is about to take place very soon? In this day and age knowledge in the use of the Defibrillator is essential. As you can see throughout the area there are public access defibrillators (PAD) and it is very important that you are adept in the use of this vital lifesaving equipment.

Each club and organisation in this and surrounding parishes should have a number of people trained in this course.

There are people with the course completed and they need to do a refresher course as is included in the rules.

Please give your name and contact details in to Martina O’Brien at the Corner Shop or phone Martina at 3321107 or 086-3538934.

World Fishermen Return

After the success of last October’s World fishing championships on Lough Ree. the Cathaoirleach of Roscommon county council Tony Ward and Inland Fisheries Minister Denis Naughten welcomed news this week that some of the top International predator anglers are returning to Roscommon this June for a second major event.

Minister Naughten and Councillor Ward were on hand in Lanesborough for the announcement that 10,000 Euro in prize money is being offered to attract the leading fishermen of the world back to the slipway in Ballyleague marina on June 24th and June 25th next.

“This competition will be restricted to just 80 boats” Michael Galvin of the Camlin and District Angling club announced. The Camlin club is running the competition for the Lough Ree Angling Hub which is once again promoting local tourism accommodation and facilities in front of an International audience.

“Thanks to Roscommon county council, we have already started to promote this competition in France and Dublin at major angling shows ” Alan Farrell of the Lough Ree Angling hub confirmed, “next month we hope to spread the word to one of the largest angling shows in Europe to be held in Rotterdam and we will work hard to bring the world’s top anglers to the county.”

Garda Vetting

An action from the last Executive meeting was to ensure all personnel involved with the Rathcline Senior and Shannon Gaels will need to be E-Vetted per the up to date GAA guidelines.

My understanding is that everyone involved with Minor Club has completed this task. There may be still a few members in the Senior administration who have yet to complete this task (including myself!).

The following link will redirect you to the criteria around vetting and also the appropriate link to complete the E-Vetting task. The criteria in the link below outlines a three-step application process.

Any supporting information (identifications etc.) should be sent to Brid O’ Reilly at the following email address: brid.oreilly75@gmail.com

Membership of the club is now open and we would earnestly ask everyone to become a member of the club. The membership is €20 for general members and €50 for playing membership. Peter Skelly and Denis Crinigan are the registrars and they will accept and receipt your membership.

Brendan Rhatigan is the registrar for the players and all players are asked to meet with Brendan as soon as possible.

Defibrillator Training

It is essential that we have people competent in the use of the defibrillator at the club grounds at all times during games and training. We would encourage parents and supporters to register for the upcoming Defibrillator training course. As we all remember from a few seasons back the value of the defibrillator and someone with the knowledge of its use so it is important that we have people available in Clonbonny for all our games fully up to speed with its use. You completing in the training can be a matter of life and death hence the need to ask you to sign up. Register your name with Joe or Martina O’Brien

Shannon Gaels

Lough Ree AC

Another large crowd was the order of the day at the Connaught Indoor Championship in the Athlone Arena at the weekend.  After having the underage events on Saturday,  we had fewer than 14 to senior on Sunday.  Let us start by congratulating Longford AC on their successes, unfortunately we were not in the same bracket, however those that did travel did us proud.

With all the activities that are going on it was great to see our boys under 12 and 13 competing and introducing themselves to events for the first time.  For some unknown reason under 12 and 13 girls are thin on the ground and it is difficult to get a relay team together in this age group and in the past, it was our girls who provided most of the glory.

Both Caoilinn Flood and Orla Cox had their first attempt at hurdles, one of the more technical events and enjoyed the experience.   Nikita Attis who is a middle-distance runner competed in the Long Jump for the first time and hopefully will improve now that he knows what is required; he also had a great run in the 800m despite not feeling well on Sunday.  When the weather settles a bit, we hope to see more action.
