Happy Christmas and Wonderful 2017

I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and wonderful 2017.

At this time of year, we always think of all of our people who are away from us or are ill and cannot celebrate with their families. We remember their times with us and smile with the wonderful memories they have given us and we shared with them. No matter where you are in the world we in the community are thinking of you and you are always in our mind, always remember you are never far from your home.

Christmas is not only a time of celebration but a time of remembrance and reflection. We remember everyone that suffered a bereavement during the year and we share with you in your sadness. To those that had joyous occasions we congratulate you and share with you in your happiness.

During the year, we welcomed back so many of our people to the area and it was so great to have you back in the bosom of your native community even for a short visit. Next year many great events will take place in the community and we look forward to once again welcoming you and many more locals back home.

I would like to thank everyone for their support and sharing their events with me during the year. Your ongoing tremendous support is the sole reason I am able to keep those away from home informed with all our local occasions and developments.

Thank You

Over the past two weekends the people attending the Masses at St. Mary’s Church in Lanesboro have been more than generous in their contributions to the Church Gate collections of Longford Social Services/Meals on Wheels and St. Vincent de Paul. Both collections stay in the county of Longford and helps greatly those most in need within the county at Christmas time and throughout the year. Almost €1,500 was contributed and your generous support will make it a very Happy Christmas for so many. Thank you for your generous contributions.

Death

The death occurred at Oakwood Nursing Home, Roscommon on Friday 9th December of Joe Gill, Anratabeg. Joe who was in his nineties was predeceased a number of years back by his wife May. Joe was a man with an in-depth knowledge of machinery and its workings. Many years ago, when no one had a digger Joe was the go to man in the area and such was the quality of his work that there was never a need to advertise, word of mouth about the quality of his work ensured that he was always busy. Joe also worked for a time with Roscommon County Council, he also found time to farm his family homestead which he did with great care and attention. Joe was an iconic figure in and around his area and he was a wonderful neighbour and friend, always ready to share the load with anyone in need of help. The attendance at the reposing of his remains in Smyth’s Funeral Home on Saturday and again at his Funeral Mass in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague and burial in Cloontuskert bore ample testimony in which Joe and his family are held.

To his sons, Joseph, Declan, Adrian and Paul, daughters, Theresa and Gillian, brother Peadar, relatives and many friends we extend our sincere sympathy

50/50

On Monday night 5th December, the 50/50 draw took place in the Peer Inn and the lucky winner of last week’s pool of €391 was Gerard Farrell, Lanesboro.

The club thanks you for your continued support. Blue weekly tickets are on sale in all local businesses and yearly pink tickets are also available costing €100.

The club would like that you take a sponsorship card as all the monies collected is shared with selected local charities. The River Shannon and the Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club awaits all you hardy swimmers that would like to take a dip on Christmas morning. The Swim will take place after 11.30am Mass in Lanesboro and if you don’t swim it will be great to see you lining the bridge supporting the swimmers. Ita Wins a Car

Many congratulations to Ita Reynolds, Cloontuskert on being the lucky winner of the Lanesboro Ballyleague Credit Union draw for a new Hyundai car that took place last week. The four winners of the €1,000 prizes were Annette Coffey, Rathcline Road, Ann Harkin, Ballyleague, Tom Gill, Ballyglass, and Lauren Farrell, Newtowncashel.

There was great excitement on Friday when we had our Christmas draws with our 3 National School members. A great welcome was given to Janet & Mary. Our manager Mary thanked the School staff for facilitating the weekly draw and praised the children for their diligence in saving every week. Mary also pointed out that every child is a winner as they are now part of a great organisation and have made a great start in life with saving for the future. In keeping with the Credit Union ethos, where all members are equal, all the prizes were equal. Also in keeping with an ethical organisation like the Credit Union, the gift cards were Me2You multi store cards which were purchased in O’Brien’s Corner House, supporting local business this Christmas.
A very Happy Christmas to all our Junior members and hope Santa is good to everyone. Janet will be back in 2017 to continue your saving journey.

Lanesboro Ballyleague Credit Union will close on Friday 23rd December at 7pm and will reopen on Friday 30th from 10am to 4pm

Lough Ree AC

Let us tart by congratulating Cian McPhillips, Longford AC on his recent success in the Under 15 All Ireland Cross Country in Dundalk.  He has been showing promise as a young athlete for the last few years. He also brought the Connaught team to the silver medal position.  Unfortunately, we had no one to join him but our girls have done this in the past. Indeed, let us not forget Nelvin Appiah on his recent success in the International Schools Combined Events, we are not au fait with the competition and how the scoring works but Nelvin did Longford proud.   Looking forward to our run on Christmas Day starting at Tullyvrane Cross and finishing at the hall to coincide with the MS Run from Newtowncashel.  Start time is 12.15 after 11.30 Mass in Lanesboro and Goody Bags for all competitors.  We hope to organise a social get together before athletes go back to school and also an AGM for 2017.  We have some prizes to present for the road run series at the social.

Ballyleague Christmas Lights

The students of Lanesborough Community College have joined in on the Christmas festivities this year by working with the new Ballyleague Christmas lights committee to deliver an impressive new nativity crib for the heart of the village.

The hard-working students at the school worked with their woodwork teacher Brian Concannon to help build the new crib – which was unveiled to all at the Strokestown road junction in the village this week and will now form part of a new look Christmas lights array of features in the area this year.

“We are indebted to the students, Brian Concannon, Michael Hanley, Sonny Wallace, Pat Kelly and all those who have helped us in any way” Noel Moran, chairman of the local Christmas lights committee said this week, “the new crib has already attracted very favourable comments and the students did a really superb job for us.”

The nativity crib is being put in place alongside the Ballyleague’s new ‘green’ Christmas tree – a special eco-friendly initiative that has seen the people of the village, that normally hosted six felled native Christmas firs, turn instead to a combination of erecting solar-powered Christmas lights on up to 14 growing trees in the village and putting in a new metal structure ‘tree’ frame to host the lights at the village corner.

By using the existing trees growing around the village, the new committee has not had to cut down any this year and the new eco-friendly metal framed structure will not only host the Christmas lights, we hope to use it to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, Easter and an array of regular tourism events in the community all year around.

Ballyleague Christmas lights wish to thank all those who supported their recent church gate collection at the church of the Holy Rosary and would like to thank the team of volunteers who helped put the

lights and other features in place this year. Special thanks to Vinny McGowan, Sean Moran, John Loughlin, Denis Dunne, Michéal Farrell, Mike Sorohan, Lee Barrett, Ciaran Mullooly and anyone else who helped in any way. The committee appreciate the ongoing support of Roscommon Municipal Authority for this community project.

Donations for the new Christmas lights structures in Ballyleague would be gratefully appreciated. To donate please contact Chairman Noel Moran at  086 2936180  or Gerry Trimble at 087 6474832.
