Curraghroe Flooding
On Wednesday evening last the torrential, thunder and lightning left a trail of devastation in its wake. Particularly badly hit was the Curraghroe area where one lady had to leave her home the water came into her home. Another house had a couple of rooms flooded and but for the quick thinking and availability of a digger another home would have been flooded.
The flash flooding took place following a torrential downpour and the water, as one local described it, sounded like a number of rivers coming down off the mountain such was the roar of it. Farmers had to move stock to higher ground and one farmer had no means of getting his cattle out of his field and had to heard them for a number of hours on one piece of high ground in his field. A house on the other side of the mountain was hit by lighting. All in all, it was a very trying and frightening time for the people of the area. Thankfully, things have returned to normal and let us hope that there will not be a repetition for a long time to come.
Have you offered your help?
This is a great opportunity for everyone to work together and celebrate our local biodiversity.
It is a great opportunity for anyone interested in the environment. On the 27th August with Bord na Mona and local community groups we will be holding an environmental awareness event in Corlea, Co Longford. This community event is for everyone with an interest in the environment around us. The event will focus on recording all biodiversity (birds, mammals, plants, mosses and invertebrates) in Corlea and will focus on habitats such as cutaway bog, intact raised bog and scrub.
During the day events such as a bird talk, bat walk, moth trapping along with general biodiversity walks will be organised. All events will be free of charge and will be available to everyone, young and old. A timetable of events will be available soon.
If you or your group would be interested in helping run one of the events on the day, please let me know and we can work together on a schedule of events. Please feel free to forward this email to anyone who may be interested. Contact David Fallon: David.Fallon@bnm.ie phone; 087 9711658 or 057 9345993

Lough Ree AC
Saturday last was the final day of the Connaught Track and Field events for 2016 and the track at Sligo IT was the venue. We were represented on the day by out Throwing Trio of Mark, Ryan and Conor and they didn’t disappoint. Starting with youngest Conor Rohan took home a gold medal in the Boys under 17 discus and the on form Ryan Murray replicated the feat in the Boys Under 19 discus. Mark Brady who also acts as an official at Connaught level in the Throwing Events won three silvers in the Senior shot, discus and hammer.
Our female representatives on the day were Caoilinn Flood in the 2k walk and Roisin Brennan in the javelin and shot s under 14, Ella Hogan was our only competitor in the under 13 age group, competing in the middle distance, long jump and javelin under 13. The standard at this level was very high and while the athletes gave a good account of themselves they didn’t finish in the medals. In light of Father’s Day, many thanks to the fathers who came out to support the athletes.
Many thanks to all the parishioners who kindly donated to our recent Church Gate collection, your support is greatly appreciated.
Sincere sympathy to the Boland family on the death if Sandra, a former member of the club and also remembering the input of her late father Gerry who was very much involved in the laying of the track in Lanesboro in the early days of Lough Ree Athletic Club.

Many thanks to all who participated in the vintage tractor run last week. A good day was had by all.
On Thursday last Frank put the trainees through their paces on the search bar. This is a long bar towed by the boat for a rapid search of a section of water with up to six divers holding on to it. All went well.
Eight divers travelled to Ballycastle on Sunday for two dives, one on The Stack and one at the swim through in the headland. Visibility was excellent.
The club was called out to a search last weekend. Unfortunately, no results at time of going to press.
Training next Thursday will be in Lough Owel for prospective rescue divers.
