Celebrating 25 Years
This year the Christmas Day run/walk from Newtowncashel will celebrate its 25th year and the committee would like to invite all runners and walkers that have taken part over the previous 24 years to come along on Christmas morning and be part of this landmark occasion.
To date over €180,000 has been raised for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and it would be wonderful achievement to top the €200,000 on this momentous occasion.
The time is now for all runners and walkers to put in the hard yards in preparation for the Christmas Day run. The walk will commence at 11.45am and the run at 12.15pm.
Sponsorship cards are available in O’Brien’s and now is the time in getting started on training and collection sponsorship.

The Parents Association of Lanesboro Community College invite you to their fundraiser in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon on Monday 7th December at 7.30pm. Chef, Gary O’Hanlon (of Viewmount House, The Restaurant, and TV 3’s Seven o’clock Show) is giving a cookery demonstration with a Christmas theme.

The Green a living history
In no 21 the first residents I have are John and Catherine Balfe and their family John, Ben, Elizabeth, Joan, Kay, grace, Marcus and Terry. The Balfe family later moved to no 9 Knock. The Balfe family was followed by the O’Brien family, Gerry and Peggy and their family Danny, Willie, Mary and Mary Teresa. The O’Brien family later moved to county Meath. Carmel and George Breaden then moved into the house and now Carmel is the resident of the house. In no22 was Tom and Delia Mc Grath and their sons Gerry and Patrick and the current residents are Lee and Sharon Cullen and their children Luke, Ewan, Roisin, Thom and Finn. In no 23 we had the Brennan family Bill and Katie and their family Marie, Charlie and Annette.
Ladies AGM
Rathcline Ladies club will hold its AGM on this coming Saturday evening 28th November in Clonbonny at 6pm.
This is a golden opportunity for anyone interested in ladies football in the area to come along and be part of a thriving club. A cup of tea, a chat, no pressure for jobs but just a great interest in the development of ladies football in the general area.
If you have not been here before, a returning player or just interested in becoming part of a great club in the community you are most welcome to the clubhouse in Clonbonny
Presentation
The presentation of both the Girls U12 Championship and Summer League medals will take place this Wednesday evening in the GAA club in Clonbonny at 7.30pm. This was a wonderful achievement by both panel and team management. This team made wonderful progress from their formation only one year back to be historic victories this year. You are all invited along to go along and join with the history makers in the clubhouse on Wednesday evening.
Generous Young Man
Conor Dennigan, aged 6, son of Niall and Marie Dennigan, Mahoraveen expressed a wish for his sixth birthday that nobody would give him a birthday present other than a donation of money. Conor wanted all the money he would then receive would be donated to Temple Street Children’s Hospital, Dublin where it would go to help the young people sick in the hospital. It was a magnanimous gesture by one so young and also for one so young that he would be thinking in such a manner.
We would like to congratulate Conor for his gesture and am sure he will be greatly rewarded in many ways for this most generous gesture. Conor received €200 and he is pictured in attachment presenting Róisín O’Connor from Temple Street with his €200 cheque.
50/50
Local Church View resident and popular man about town, Joe Duffy, was the lucky winner of the Rathcline 50/50 draw on Monday night last. The draw took place in Adie’s and Joe was the lucky winner of €365. The win could not have come at a better time as Joe was travelling to his native Scotland for a few days on his native soil.
The club thanks everyone for their continued support and would encourage those not playing to throw in their €2 and who knows it may be you in the draw on Monday night next.
Pass the Word
A Memorial Mass for deceased members and friends of the Longford Association in London will be celebrated on Sunday 13th December at 12 noon in St Gabriel’s Church, 390 Northolt Road, South Harrow, HA2 8EX. The Mass will be followed by a Reception in St Gabriel’s Club next door to The Church. All members and friends of The Association, past and present and people with Longford connections are welcome both at the Mass and Reception. The nearest Station is South Harrow.
This is a great opportunity for London based locals to network with locals and it will also be a great boost for the Longford Association in London.
Confirmation
Enrolment for Confirmation in 2016 will take place in St. Mary’s Church on Sunday next 29th November at 9.30am Mass.
Phonebook deliveries causing Concern
Over the past number of weeks we all received our new 04 phonebooks. The method of the people delivering the phonebooks has been brought to my attention. Those delivering just drop off the book at all houses even those that are evidently unoccupied. By just dropping phonebooks at doors that have their letterboxes blocked or those vacant houses or those that are not at home due to work commitments is not on and it is also a form of littering. It is an invitation for those unscrupulous people that are currently prowling areas to break into these houses.
Perhaps a better method would be to use a local premises and do a postal drop for everyone to come and collect their new phonebooks. They can control it that way and also take back all the phonebooks that were not collected.
Annual Badminton Quiz
It’s that time of year to dust off the quiz books and get ready for our Table Quiz. Promised to be a great night with lots of spot prizes, just in time before Christmas. The annual quiz will be held on this Saturday night 28th November in Clarke’s Bar in Lanesboro at 9:30pm. Get a team or two together and come on down and enjoy the night.
Brushstrokes Art Exhibition
Brushstrokes will hold their annual Christmas exhibition in St. Mary’s Hall from Thursday week 3rd December until Sunday 6th December, 2015. Brushstrokes are celebrating “20 Years a Growing” this year in 2015, so drop in and have a browse. There are works at prices to suit all budgets and they make an ideal, locally-made gift for Christmas.

Meeting of Residents of Roscommon Road Area in Ballyleague
In recent months Ballyleague Village Renewal and residents on the Roscommon road out of Ballyleague have been liaising with the county council about improvements to drainage and the entrance roadway and grass verge on the side of the main road going from Clonadra hill into Ray’s filling station in Ballyleague. Some improvements have already been carried out but it is hoped to draw up a plan for additional works and improvements that will make it safer to walk along the side of that busy road. With this in mind the Ballyleague village renewal committee set up a subcommittee chaired by Gerry Trimble who intends to meet with and consult with all residents along the road and from the adjoining townlands before this goes any further.
Gerry is now inviting everyone who lives along the main road between Rays filling station and Trimble’s in Clonadra (or lives in Moher or along the line road or the road into Rockwood) to attend a meeting in St Faithleach’s clubhouse in Ballyleague on Monday November 30th at 8.30pm when there will be a general chat about improvements that might be carried out for safety reasons and to enhance the approach roads.

Lanesboro Bridge Club
The winners of the Marie Sheeran Memorial Trophy competition played for on Wednesday 11th November were Gemma Douglas and Elish Gray.
The results for the competition held on Wednesday 18th November were: N/S 1st Frank and Frances Brennan, 2nd Patricia Mc Gann and Mary Jameson and 3rd Katharine Harrison and Philomena Walsh. E/W 1st Phil Chalmers and Cyril Hussey, 2nd Bernadette Clancy and Mary Mc Gushin and 3rd place was a tie between Brid Mc Dermott and Bernadette Gillen & Eileen Kelly and Una Clarke.
Lanesboro Library Update
The Knitting & Crochet Group continues to meet every Monday from 2 to 4pm. All welcome.
ESOL Class (English for speakers of other languages) continues every Tuesday evening 7-9pm.
The Book Club will continue on this coming Friday 27th November at 11am where the book for discussion will be ‘Birdsong’ by Sebastian Faulks.
Lasraí Writers Group – The next Lasraí Writers Group meeting will take place in the library on Monday 14th December 7-9pm. New members welcome.
You are reminded that the library staff are still collecting unwanted foreign currency and old coins/notes in aid of ISPCC. The smallest donation can make a huge difference.
Used stamps also being collected at the library for ISPCC.
Cheque Presentation
A recent cheque presentation to Roscommon Mayo Hospice took place in Clarke Bar. A total of €4,000 was raised in two separate events in Clarkes Bar, Lanesboro. The first fund raising event was The Annual Anthony Healy Memorial 25 Card Drive and this year the first summer barbecue was held. With thanks to all involved, the many sponsors, all those who helped in anyway and those who supported this very worthy cause.

Variety Show
The Transition Year students of Lanesboro Community College will host a Variety Concert in Lanesboro Parish Hall on Thursday week 3rd December. The day of the variety show is making a comeback and the fun, laughter and sheer enjoyment to be got from a variety show is only fantastic. Variety shows are a throwback to the days of the John Player Tops of the Town and even further when a huge cast entertained royally the assembled masses and I am sure that this show will be packed to capacity. Admission is €8 for adults and €5 for under 16s. The show will commence at 8pm and the advice is to be there early as I am sure the sold out signs will be up in advance of the start time.

Ballyleague Village Renewal wish to thank Waterways Ireland for the tremendous work presently underway in the North harbour quay area beside the bridge. After a meeting between the Village Renewal committee and Waterways last year this project was outlined and drawn up. It includes a new roadway, a new footpath, special seating, a new garden and trees and shrubs along with safety railings. It will be a brilliant job for the area.

Killashee Make History
Many congratulations to Killashee club on their magnificent achievement last weekend on becoming the first Longford side to reach a Leinster club final. It has been a remarkable Leinster run for the team and parish and hopefully it is not about to end soon.
A special word of congratulations must go to local Ballyleague man Raymond Curley who went in as manager this year and has led them to this ground breaking achievement.
They will meet Curraha from Meath in the Leinster final in a few weeks’ time in Pearse Park and we wish them continued success.
Rathcline GAA
Dinner Dance – To celebrate the success of 2015 the club will be holding a dinner dance in the Radisson Blu Athlone on Saturday 23rd January. The players will be presented with medals on the night and our two cups will be on show. It promises to be a great night and more details will follow in the coming weeks.
Intermediate Player of the Year – Well done to Shane Kenny and James Carroll who were both nominated for the Intermediate Player of the Year. Congratulations to Killashee – Congratulations to our neighbours St. Brigid’s Killashee who overcame Milltown in the Leinster Junior Club semi-final and have now historically reached a Leinster Junior Club final. Well done to all and best of luck in the final.
Commiserations to Killoe – Commiserations to Killoe who were beaten by Portlaoise in the Leinster Senior Club semi-final today.
Western Gaels – Congratulations to the Western Gaels minor team who defeated Colmcille 4-10 to 1-09 in the Minor Shield Division 1 final at the weekend.
St. Faithleach’s GAA
Senior Club A.G.M will take place on Friday 4th December in the Clubhouse. Mass for deceased members takes place at 8.30pm with the A.G.M directly after. All members and players are asked to attend.
Minor A.G.M: St. Faithleach’s GAA Minor Club AGM was held in the clubhouse on Friday night last. Minor Chairman, James Irwin opened the meeting and welcomed all. President, Pat Joe Fallon addressed the meeting, congratulating the Minor and Ladies teams on their achievements throughout 2015. Treasurer Shane Rohan, gave a detailed report of the Income/Expenditure for 2015. Minor Chairman, James Irwin Chairman, thanked his fellow officers for their hard work during the year and expressed thanks to everyone. Special word of thanks and praise to all managers/mentors of the Minor and Ladies club teams. Thanks were expressed to Henry Kenny, Field Committee for his work. A detailed report of the clubs achievements and activities was presented by Secretary, Monica Connaughton on the night. Qoona Cox Ladies Secretary gave a comprehensive run down on all the ladies teams and achievements throughout the year as well as a special tribute to former ladies manager and club member Denis Mc Loone (R.I.P). Senior Club Chairman, Derek Thompson, on behalf of the Executive Committee, thanked all members of the Minor and Ladies committees for their hard work and acknowledged the achievements of all teams throughout the year. He expressed the importance of the development plan in place for the continued success of the club and its progression into the future. Thanks were expressed to outgoing officers James Irwin (Chairman), Gerry O’Donnell (Vice Chairman), and Shay Rohan (Treasurer). The following officers were elected for 2015. President, Pat Joe Fallon. Secretary, Monica Connaughton. Ladies Secretary, Qoona Cox. PRO, Nicola Byrne. The A.G.M is to be reconvened on Thursday 10th December for further election of committee members, all members and parents are urged to attend as your voice/opinions are of the utmost importance to the running of the Club.

Lotto: The last draw took place on Tuesday 17th November. There was no jackpot winner and the numbers drawn were 2, 8, 18 and 22. The five €20 winners were Ann Donoghue, Kathleen Hanly, David Harrison, Aidan Rowan and Annie Coyle. The next draw takes place on Tuesday 1st December.
