Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
The Green a living history
Following a two week break I resume with a history of the Green.
I still seek memories and family name from the past in the Green and I hope you will contact me joea@iol.ie with all.
In no 18 there was the Casey family and while I have no name of the parents I have the names of Joe and Síle. Joe was a noted boxer and he won an All-Ireland title and represented Ireland. There was also the Mc Quillan family, I have the name of the father Archie I do not have any further details and while they had two houses there must have been a large family. I would appreciate knowledge on the family names. Tom and Eileen Ganly were next into the house and their family was Elaine, twins Liam and Sean, Aidan, David, Declan and Denise. The next residents were Paddy and Margaret Kilbride and their family, mark, Helena, Catherine and Joseph. The next residents were John and Caroline Cullen and their children, twins Sharon and Stephanie, Simon and Mary.
Death
When someone enters your community as a young apprentice you never know the impact that a young person will have on your community if they remain. In the case of Denis Mc Loone who passed away at his residence in Ballyglass on Thursday 5th November his impact was truly immense. A native of Glenties, Donegal, Denis came to Bord na Mona to serve his time as an apprentice. Donegal’s loss was undoubtedly our community’s gain. Denis remained in Lanesboro and met and married local girl Carmel Kiernan and settled in Cloontuskert before building a new home in Ballyglass. Denis had a great involvement in the affairs of the parish and was highly involved with the St. Faithleach’s club. In recent times Denis was stricken with cancer and it was the cause of his untimely death. He faced the challenge with a wonderful attitude, his manner and attitude was so strong and resolute and his cheerful disposition did not alter at any stage. His warmth of personality will be sadly and greatly missed by everyone that had the pleasure to know him. Our hearts and communities are the lesser for his passing. The attendance at the reposing of his remains on Friday at his residence and again on Saturday at his Funeral Mass in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Ballyleague and burial in Clonbonny Cemetery bore ample testimony to his high standing in our community.
To his wife Carmel, daughters Laura and Amanda, his mother Bríd, brother Anthony, sister Anne, relatives and many friends we extend our heartfelt sympathy.
London Calling
A Memorial Mass for deceased members and friends of the Longford Association in London will be celebrated on Sunday 13th December at 12 noon in St Gabriel’s Church, 390 Northolt Road, South Harrow, HA2 EX. The Mass will be followed by a Reception in St Gabriel’s Club next door to The Church. All members and friends of The Association, past and present and people with Longford connections are welcome both at the Mass and Reception. The nearest Station is South Harrow.
This is a great opportunity for London based locals to network with locals and it will also be a great boost for the Longford Association in London.
John wins €5000
Saturday night last in the RTÉ studio in Donnybrook John Jordan from the Green was the second Lanesboro resident in four weeks to be on the Winning Streak and in with the opportunity of winning a car. Unfortunately for John the car went early in the draw of the ball but he did finish up with a cheque for €5,000. We congratulate John and as he said on Saturday night “that’s Christmas sorted”

Battle of the Bridge on Saturday
Following the outstanding success of dancing over the Bridge last year the clubs of St. Faithleach’s and Rathcline have come together to stage a weekend of activities of which the highlight of the weekend will be the White Collar Boxing as both side compete in the Battle of the Bridge.
The weekend would not have happened without the most generous sponsorship Munnelly Support Services and Lanesboro Ballyleague Credit Union and both parties must complimented for their wholesome support for this tremendous community event.
The White Collared boxing will take place on Saturday night 14th November at 8pm. The venue will be the St. Faithleach’s club grounds. Following the night of boxing a DJ will be on hand to help you dance the night away.
The events will commence on Friday night with a Kiddies Disco in the marquee from 7 to 9pm followed at 10.30 by one of Ireland’s best dance and party bands. It is said of shaken Edge that they have wonderful individual musicianship, unrivalled vocal harmonies, energetic stage shows and audience interaction that makes Shaken Edge a band not to be missed and the promise of a fabulous night not to be missed.
There is a combo ticket available for Friday and Saturday night priced at €20. This is wonderful value for what promises to be a spectacular weekend.
On Sunday there will be a Tractor Run beginning at 2pm and that evening the weekend will finish with a Céilí in the marquee to the wonderful sounds of the Matt Cunningham Céilí band. Admission to the céilí will be €10.

All Roads lead to Cashel

Killashee have remained unbeaten since their defeat by Rathcline in the final and are now in the Leinster Junior semi-final. They will be seeking revenge for Rathcline’s victory which makes this game all the more interesting. The Rathcline lads will be on a high after a fabulous victory over Drumlish on Saturday night last regaining Division 1 status allied to their excellent performance while going down in the Leinster Intermediate championship in Wexford. I hope a huge crowd from the parish will go to Cashel to support Rathcline and cheer them on to a clean sweep of Longford honours this year.

Lough Ree AC
Scenic Lough Key Forest Park was the venue for the Western Region Cross Country Championship for the Uneven Age Groups on Sunday. “Where there is muck there is luck” could be a better caption for this report as overnight rain turned this tough course into a quagmire. Full marks to those who braved the conditions particularly as they had no team support. Orla Cox showed why she was voted Club Athlete of last year when finishing in the girls U/13 event, but the Cloontuskert girl will have rivals this year in Katie Murray, Caoilinn Flood, Nikita Attis, Kiernan O’Dowd and Eoin Cox who also mastered the severe conditions. Well done to all you did your club proud!!
Book well received
After a successful launch this week Ciaran Mullooly’s book is now on sale in O’Brien’s Corner shop and throughout the area. The book has certainly started a debate about how the economy of the town is going to recover after the recession and that is no harm either. It is also nice to see so many local faces in it and read about the changes in the area over the last 30 years. After a lot of inquiries over the last few weeks Ciaran is making arrangements for the delivery of the book to those who are away from home and for more details you can send him an e mail at ciaranmullooly@gmail.com to arrange this. Ciaran wishes to thank everyone who came along to the launch in the community college and helped in any way to make the event a success.
Tri Club AGM
Lanesboro Tri Club help the AGM on Friday 6th November in the club rooms. The committee would like to thank all the members who came to the meeting and showed such enthusiasm for this growing club. The previous executive committee was thanked for all their hard work over the year with a new committee being put in place. The following members took up positions on the committee. Chairperson: James Gallagher, Secretary: Mark Kenny, Treasurer: Cormac Hoare
Assistant Treasurer: Frank O Connor, Child Protection: Ronnie Johnston, PRO: Andree Gallagher
Assistant PRO: Rachel Burke, Training Officer: Mark Mimnagh and Social Officer: Sinead Heffernan
Next year is a big year for the club as it will host the National Series Sprint Distance Race and National Championship Sprint Distance Race, the only one of its kind in Ireland, which will see elite triathletes come to Lanesboro to battle it out for the title. It is a great honour for the club and planning has already started under the direction of Anthony Gillen who once again took on this role for a third time running. We wish Anthony and his race committee all the best and we hope as many members get involved in helping out so as we can put on the best race possible.
Before the AGM a presentation took place of the cheques from the Charity Swim which was held last August. Two cheques of €3170 were presented, one to the Roscommon Disability Support Services and the other to St Christopher’s Services Longford. The charities thanked the club and everyone involved in raising these vital funds. Sean Farrell, swim organizer, thanked all those who raised the sponsorship and also those clubs, societies and individuals who volunteered their time and expertise on the day making the whole event such a great success.

Champion Girls
The girls of Fermoyle NS had an outstanding victory over Mullinalaghta in a tension filled final in Pearse Park on Saturday last. The panel was Aoibhe Gethings, Jane Dowd, Holly Wyse, Eabha Healy, Caoilinn Flood, Wiktoria Jedrych, Ciara Gavigan, Lauren Moran, Ella Hogan and Aoife Kennelly.

Division 1 Promotion/Relegation Final Replay – After a wonderful season for the club Friday night topped it off as we won promotion back to Division 1. In a tough game in Killoe on Saturday night against Fr. Manning Gaels we eventually came out winners by a point with a score line of 0-13 to 1-09. It was a very tight game with Fr. Manning Gaels up by a point at half time but we held our nerve towards the end and deservedly came out on top to win promotion. Well done to all our players, Gareth and his backroom team on a magnificent achievement for the season.
