What we have all been waiting for!
All the collecting of photos, signs, memorabilia and names of every one of the businesses of the main Street of Lanesboro and Ballyleague are now in place for the exhibition that will be launched in the library on Thursday 23rd July. The trip through all the local businesses was immense and a wonderful journey and you have all to be thanked for your many contributions on the journey.
This is a date for your diary and it will be an exhibition that will be well worth visiting especially everyone that remembered even some of the business on the main Street and Ballyleague.
If you have anything, in relation to the exhibition, that you have not yet dropped into Stella can you do so immediately to ease pressure closer to the date.

John Quinn who served as a priest with us in Rathcline parish. The event will start at 5pm. Fr. Quinn will be fondly remembered within the parish as a priest who gave great comfort and succor to many parishioners. He was one of the prime movers of the festival of Irish music on the banks of the Shannon at Aughakeel that will be long remembered a forerunner to many festivals. You are invited to go along and celebrate with Fr. Quinn. Tickets are available by contacting Dympna Quinn by phoning 087-1252820.

It is essential that everyone tend to their family graves and have their own particular looking great for this very special occasion.
Lough Ree Golfing Society
The society visited Loughrea Golf Course on Saturday last and all the members who attended had a thoroughly enjoyable day at this exquisite woodland course. The wide open fairways, immaculately prepared, were very forgiving to the any wayward shots. Tiger would have had no worries on this splendid course! Neither was there any punishing rough which suits the majority of amateur golfers. The greens were slick but fair and any bad golf could not be blamed on the course!
The Society was welcomed and treated very decently by the hosts at the club and great thanks is due to Loughrea Golf staff and caterers for such pleasantness in so wonderful a setting.
The prizes were distributed as follows: nearest the pin on par 3, 17th: Timmy Glynn; 2nd nine: Jackie McDonnell; 1st nine: Johnny Jordan; 3rd place on 34 points: John Martin; 2nd went to our captain Mick Brennan with 34 points also and a better back nine than John. The first prize was won by Timmy Glynn with a very good score of 37 points net. Well done to all and as always all who attended were winners. The Lough Ree Golfing Society looks forward to seeing you all in Portumna on Saturday 25th July.
Book your Irish Language Course
An Irish Language Summer Course (SIAMSA!) will take place on Monday week 6th July to Friday 10th July in Gaelscoil Longfoirt. The course will take place from 9.30am to 3.00pm each day and will cater for students from Second Class to First Year. Further information and Applications forms available from Yvonne Ní Mhurchú 087-2642665.
Man of the Match
Upon reading the Irish Independent on Monday morning last it was a particular pleasure to see that one of our very own was awarded the Man of the Match for his performance for Longford against Carlow on Saturday last. In recent times it is not very often that we had a county player and it is great to see that Liam is flying the flag of his club high with a performance that we all know he is capable of and better. Congratulations to Liam and also to, I am sure, proud parents Denis and Cathriona.
While it was a good day on one side of the bridge it was not so on the other where Roscommon surprisingly went down to Sligo in the Connaught semi-final. All is not last as they have drawn Cavan in the Qualifiers on Saturday week and their recent performances against Cavan have been excellent.
For the record Longford will have to travel to Clare on Saturday week and it may be a part of a double header as Clare hurlers are drawn at home to Offaly.
Lough Ree 2000 Bridge
Firstly, the Club members extend our sincere sympathy to Philomena Walsh, Rathcline Road, on the passing of her mother, in Williamstown, recently. She had reached the wonderful age of 100, and also, to Patsy Canavan, whose husband Gus, passed away last week. May they rest in peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with both families.
Results: June 15th: N/S Gross/Nett: 1st Eileen Kelly and Nancy Dolan, 2nd Maureen Hynes and Loretta Cooney and 3rd Kathleen Kelly and Renee Walsh. E/W: Gross and Nett: 1st Kitty Dowd and Chis McGrath, 2nd Goretti Kenny and Mary Jameson and 3rd Ann Delaney and Ann Fallon
Clothes Bank in Car Park
A new clothes bank has been put into the car park and it is hoped that everyone with old clothes for disposal will avail of this facility. The clothes bank is been organised by the Rathcline Ladies club and they look forward to your clothing contributions.
Triathlon with options
Local Two Provinces Triathlon:
The day is drawing closer for this year’s Two Provinces Triathlon organised by Lanesboro’s Triathlon club. July 11th is the date for the big Two Provinces Triathlon. The club looks forward to welcoming triathletes to Lanesboro from all over the country as has been the case since the inception of the Two Provinces triathlon. The main triathlon race consists of a 750m swim in Lough Ree followed by a 20km bike out to Scramogue and back and finishes with a 5km run up the Rathcline Rd and back down through the quarry to the finish line beside the duck pond.
The club will also host the second race of its kind in the country, an aqua bike (swim & bike). The club also hosts and welcomes those to try-a-tri which gives those who are not confident with swimming a full 750m, the opportunity to take on a shorter distance swim.
The race committee and club members are working hard to put on a great event, once again putting Lanesboro on the map.
The entire community is once again to come out and cheer on all the triathletes as they take on the challenge. The triathlon draws huge local support and they ae once again welcoming everyone to come and make this another wonderful occasion for our community.
50/50
The 50/50 draw took place in Clarke’s Bar on Monday night last 15th June and the winning prize money travels all the way to Sydney, Australia in the person of Ian Farrell who received the winner’s prize of €410. The club thanks everyone for their support and encourages everyone to support their weekly draw. For just €2 you too can be a winner no matter where you are in the world.
New President Inaugurated
On Saturday last 20th June in Carton House local man Eamon O’Flaherty was inaugurated as President of the Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers. It was a proud day for Eamon who has worked diligently in his profession as an Auctioneer and Valuer but also in the creation of new and innovative ways for his business. At a time when the price of property was on the slide and many auctioneers struggling Eamon worked tremendously hard in highlighting many positive aspects of his profession which won him acclaim far and wide. Eamon is Director of Property Partners Brady in Maynooth.
We congratulate Eamon on his wonderful achievement. Eamon is son of a very proud mother Mary and the late PJ O’Flaherty and is brother of James, Joe and Declan. Not too long ago Eamon was bereaved by his wife Ann, she would have been immensely proud of his wonderful achievement and success as much as his young children Patrick and Áine were last weekend.
Not only was it a proud day for Eamon and his family but also one for his native parish and county. Eamon can be seen wherever Longford are playing and despite his residence being in Kildare his native sod is still most important to him
Championship Sunday
Rathcline Ladies will make their first appearance in this year’s Longford senior Ladies championship on Sunday next when they travel over to Drumlish to take on the local St. Helen’s team in their first round game. We wish the ladies well and look forward to them starting with a victory on Sunday. The throw in time for this game is 12noon.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the wide number of family and friends of the late Tommy Murphy, late of Barnacor and Ballyleague who died recently in New York.

Talk the Walk for the Samaritans
A very different walk will take place in Longford on Saturday 4th July at 8am. Talk the Walk will start at Pearse Park, walk down to the mall and back to Pearse Park for breakfast. The idea of the Talk and Walk is that it is a walk with others at your own pace and you and your walking partners are encouraged to chat and talk the journey. The significance of the ‘Talk and Walk’ is that it is highlighting the need for people to talk to others and highlighting to others in need of support that talking is good and there is always someone ready to listen. The total proceeds of the walk will be donated to the Samaritans who work closely with the GAA community throughout the country. The Samaritans provide a free and confidential helpline for anyone who is going through any distress or worry in their life – 116 123 or phone the Athlone/Midlands branch (090) 6473133.

Ballyleague Tidy Towns
With adjudication taking place this week in the National Tidy Towns competition Ballyleague Tidy Towns are asking all local residents and visitors to play their part to ensure the village is looking clean and tidy. It was particularly great to see local residents out cutting grass on the roadside and painting their property last weekend in the sunshine – and putting up their own flower baskets afterwards. The committee is very grateful to John Loughlin, Gerry Trimble, Jimmy Hudson Paddy Hilton and Ciaran Mullooly for painting and putting new estate signage in place at Shannonside on the Roscommon road. It looks very well art of our community sustainable waste programme and have been put in place at the Waterways Ireland boat shed in the north harbour, the credit union in Ballyleague, the church of the Holy Rosary and St Faithleach’s GAA grounds. All rain water collected will go towards the watering of flowers and plants in the area over the summer. Our thanks also to Jimmy Judson, Michael Hanley and Paddy Hilton who have worked hard to get new estate signage in place for Shannonside estate on the Roscommon road.
