Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes Monday 8th June 2015

Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

The Green – a living memory

Speaking to James Harold, Main Street, on Sunday last he told me that prior to houses being built on the Green that the Rathcline club played their football there.

Geraldine Gillhooley, (nee Kirwan 43) recalls her fathers and his times with Bord na Mona in an email received last week.

My Dad Jerry Kirwan (No.43) was Transport Foreman with Bord Na Mona and my Uncle Michael Kirwan (No.38) was a Supervisor. They both came from Killererin, Tuam, Co Galway – a world away from Lanesborough, Co Longford in those days. Dad moved throughout Ireland when Bord Na Mona was established seeking workers to come to Lanesborough. The offer of a weekly wage and a new house with running water, electricity and a bathroom was very attractive to men who would otherwise have to emigrate or live in poverty at home. Many could not provide for their wives and children. Mostly they came from small farms throughout the country which could only support one son and his family so the other sons had to find employment elsewhere. This is where Bord Na Mona offered a lifeline. Although in todays’ terms Lanesborough would not be considered a ‘town’ to these new families they were moving from very rural areas to an ‘urban’ area. Dad was in charge of allocating plots of turf for footing to various men and their families.  I vividly remember men calling to our house on foot, by bicycle and on tractors seeking work. Callers left bags of potatoes and eggs to show their appreciation when they secured work. I also remember people calling to our house at Christmas with cigarettes for my late Dad and a box of chocolates for the children. These boxes of chocolates had a ribbon on right hand corner and maybe a picture of a horse or some other animal on the front of box. A real luxury item in the 1960’s! In later years I often heard my mother, Tess, say that the wives of the men who were anxious to get their husbands with Bord Na Mona would stop her coming out of mass and ask her to do her best to get their husbands and sons for summer work. I’ve met people in past years who told me had Dad not taken them on for summer work they would never have been able to go on to secondary education. If a son of the family was studying for the priesthood that family always got the work. No interviews or application online required. I also remember Dad used to have a pile of Bord Na Mona cheques every Thursday evening. Apparently he delivered them by hand to the various workers on a Friday. He had a little loco (small train) and he went from one part of bog to next, however, if he had cheques for some of our neighbours he gave them to me to deliver as I was the eldest in our family. I loved this job as I used to get maybe 3p from the head of house or sweets. I particularly loved to get John Reilly’s (54) cheque (dad to Mary Claire Wallace, Myles, Paudie, Michael, Eugene & Phelim (RIP) because I always got money in that house!! There were no computers in those days so I remember Dad at end of kitchen table filling in the timesheets. There were no electronic fund transfers of wages to the bank but everyone was very happy to receive their cheque into their hand.

Lough Ree AC

Claremorris was the venue for the Connaught U9 to U12 championships on Saturday last and weather-wise it was a miserable place to be.

To start with: – ‘Brownie Points’ to the parents who traveled to the Mayo venue. It would have been so easy to stay in bed on Sunday morning. As this competition is based on teams of two, it is essential that both parties are in attendance.

The news is “no medals from Claremorris”, Hopes were that the Turbo Javelin might oblige, but no such luck. With strong cross-winds in bursts from the Atlantic, the youngsters had never encountered such conditions. This is not to be taken as a criticism and no doubt but their day will come. On the track, Aoife Kennelly is something else. She brought in the 2nd fastest time and has buckets of ability and determination. She still has to find her most suitable event.

All-Ireland Medal – Last week this column complimented Ryan Murray on winning the Connaught schools Discus title and qualifying for the All-Ireland where he finished a very credible 7th. He will be young enough for the same event next year. In the meantime a young Ballagh student escaped under the radar. He won the Connaught Junior Discus qualifying to the All-Ireland Finals where he put up a wonderful performance where he finished in 2nd place. Conor Rohan, a product of Ballagh N.S. introduced himself to the sport and took on the might of Clongowes Wood, Belvedere, Roscrea, Blackrock College etc. where winning the “College of Science Cup” is their main aim. National event coaches are employed as P.E. teachers or visit their colleges on a monthly basis. There are no words that describe Conor’s performance only ‘wow’. Well done Conor.

Incidental, next weekend 13th/14th June the Lough Ree Annual Church Gate collection will be held. The championships for U13 and upwards is fixed for Claremorris on Saturday with the Co. Longford Community Games Finals taking place in Ballymahon on Sunday. Wishing all the club athletes the very best of luck on Saturday and Sunday.

50/50

The 50/50 draw took place in The Yacht Bar on Monday night last 1st June and the lucky winner was Ita Reynolds and Kitty Murphy, Cloontuskert. The lucky ladies received €40 between them. The club thanks everyone for their support and encourages everyone to support their weekly draw. For just €2 you too can be a winner.

Community Games Reminder

The County Finals will take place on Sunday June 14th in Leo Casey GAA Grounds, Ballymahon. Field Events will start at 10am and Track at 12pm sharp. Competitors must be at the venue 30 minutes before they start. Admission €5 per adult, U16s free.

Raid my Runway for Samaritans

Raid My Runway is an exciting novel event which was established earlier this year by two Roscommon Ladies designed to help ladies de-clutter their wardrobes and turn that clutter into cash. Most ladies have wardrobes bulging with items they never wear, shoes that don’t fit, and a multitude of bags, hats and accessories that were most likely bought on impulse.

A Rail Pop Up Sale event will take place at the Sheraton in Athlone on Sunday 14th June. Billed as the “Ultimate Girls Shopping Day out in Athlone” it is hoped ladies will use this opportunity to raid their wardrobes, clear out the pesky clutter and numerous unworn and pre loved items and take them along on the day with a view to selling them on to a new home. It only costs €25 euro to bring along your own rail on the day but booking is advised.

“We are happy to provide a charity rail on the day for the local Athlone Samaritans as this very worthy charity has been a beacon of light and tremendous support for many people in the Midlands now for many years” added organiser Geraldine Grealy.  Geraldine is a local lady she is formerly Geraldine Murray from Thureen. The Clothes Rail Pop up sale will run from noon to 4pm.

Those who wish to sell from their own rails and stands are invited to donate a single item, if they so wish to the Samaritans Rail, but there is no obligation. All monies raised at the Samaritans Charity Rail will go direct to the Charity which will be manned on the day by Samaritans PRO Deirdre Collins and a member of her team.

Following on from the success of the recent Raid My Runway event at the Abbey Hotel in Roscommon, organisers decided to stage the Summer 2015 event in Athlone. It is hoped to stage another event at the Abbey this October.

All visitors to the event on the day will be entered into a free draw for a makeover thanks to Athlone makeup artist Dawn Melissa Hand, and a lucky shopper will also take home a gift voucher towards a stunning bespoke head piece from Rachel Feeley Designs. Perfect if you are planning on attending Ladies Day events this summer.

Rachel and Geraldine will also dispense free stylist advice on choosing an outfit and matching suitable accessories.  If you wish to come along and sell items on the day please register by no later than Friday 12th June by calling 086 3276584 or 087 6798322. Check out their FB page raidmyrunwayrail otherwise it’s free admission to come and browse and perhaps bag a bargain on the day.

Tell your friends and make it a fun day out for the “Raid My Runway” Rail Sale extravaganza on June 14th in the Sheraton Athlone.

Cart before the Horse

The norm for all is to train hard for a triathlon and most probably do a duathlon first but Dean Masterson turned the norm on its head when he undertook the Lanzarote Ironman two weeks ago. Ironman Lanzarote is the second hardest Ironman in the world.

Dean returned home from Australia last October after nearly 2 years and decided he wanted to give triathlon a shot seeing that his brother Joe and sister Ronie had completed many triathlons and also achieved the Ironman accolade having completed their in Newcastle, England, a few years. When he entered Ironman Lanzarote he knew he was undertaking a mammoth task.

Dean set about getting himself a training programme and healthy diet and at the weekends he was to be seen in the Sliabh Bloom Mountains or the Wicklow Mountains training with his sister Ronie’s partner Derek Rutherford.  Derek also did ironman Lanzarote but unfortunately he didn’t get to finish as he missed the cut off point at 109k in the cycle by 8mins. Therefore he was not allowed to continue. This was devastating for him. Ironman can be a harsh sport at times but the rules are the rules. Derek is already an ironman after completing Zurich

Ironman only 10 months ago. Once an ironman always an ironman.

Dean was out of the water in a time of 1:20 (2.5miles) he finished the cycle in 8:01 (180k) and ran the marathon 26.2 miles in 4:45. He completed the course in a time of 14 hrs 19 mins. This was a marvellous achievement by Dean and I am sure the upcoming annual Triathlon in Lanesboro on Saturday 11th July will just feel like a light training session.

Tennis Club

The Lough Ree Bay Tennis club continues weekly coaching for all local children from 6 to 8pm every Saturday evening at the tennis courts in the marina in Ballyleague. Children aged 5 to 10 normally train between 6 and 7pm. Older children are coached by Tennis Ireland level 2 coach Richard Turner from 7 to 8pm. All club members and their parents are requested to get in touch with the club this week to confirm their plans for next weekend. Please e mail: loughreebaytennisclub@gmail.com if you wish to take part

Judging for the Tidy Towns competition commences next Monday, please join the volunteers on the weekly clean ups, on Wednesdays from 8 to 9pm, meeting at the Parish Hall. Recent projects completed include the installation of a new sign by Coillte at the entrance into the woodland walk, hanging baskets and planting of the boat and planter boxes/litter bins, biodiversity project involving the tilling and planting of barley in the co council field on the Longford Road, new school garden at Lanesborough NS, new sculpture using recycled river navigation buoys at the newly planted butterfly garden the entrance to the Hot Water stretch, photographic display in the Old Post Office windows, installation of a three bay segregation litter bin at the Parish Hall, kindly sponsored by Lough Ree Power and the launch of the Lanesborough Tree Trail . The objective of the trail is to raise awareness of the different species of native trees and their contribution to our community. The trail includes a main information panel located on the Main Street and trail map. The trail includes twelve native species of tree and at each location on the trail you will find an information panel on the particular tree species. The tree trail is part of our Tree Project which also involves the installation of a “Tree of Life” mural, a beautifully hand painted mural by members of Brushstrokes Art Group. The mural has been installed on the premises next door to Supervalu. We hope to continue our programme of projects during the coming months, you can help by picking a piece of litter, sweeping a footpath outside your house, joining the weekly clean up, painting a gate/front wall, putting up a window box/hanging basket and giving your ideas for future projects to any member of the committee.

Lanesborough seeks world angling venue

Fresh from the success of their staging of an International Coarse fishing event in recent weeks the Coarse Angling Federation of Ireland has formally nominated the Lanesborough and Ballyleague area to contest a bid to host the World Championship Angling ‘Predator Boat’ event in October 2016.

This competition is boat based for anglers catching pike and perch on the Shannon and attracts fishermen from 22 countries. It will bring a significant financial boost to the local economy of the Lanesborough-Ballyleague area.

This major announcement represents a boost of well over a quarter of a million euro to the local economy of Longford and Roscommon.

The financial spin-off will come from the following:

Accommodation & Food & Drink:

Fishermen and women from at least 22 countries will be attending the event on October 2016. Each international team will be made up of approximately 14 people – this includes the team members who fish, the manager and other officials of the home federation of anglers who travel to support their country.

This means that approximately 300 people will require accommodation locally for 5 days – which is the duration of the world championship event. The knock on benefits for those providing B & B, food and drink in local pubs, restaurants and the hospitality sector are evident.

The accommodation dividend can be calculated at approximately €100,000 and the local Lough Ree Angling hub would like to now appeal to all local property owners who wish to provide self-catering or B & B accommodation to come forward to us before Friday next June 12th at 6pm with an e mail that should contain some photos of their house and facilities. To register your accommodation please contact Hub Members Gerald Farrell, Alan Farrell, Joe Cribbin, Alan Horohoe Hugh Keane, Philip Gordon or Ciaran Mullooly urgently.

Boat Hire

The world championship predator boat event will require a minimum of 40 lake boats per day to be hired locally with the services of a gilly/boatman. The market rate for this boat hire is €100 per boat per day so the return to the local community over the course of the five day event in October 2016 will be €20,000.

Specific arrangements will have to be made for the launching of boats in the local harbours/marinas and the provision of a facility to host the gala presentation at the end of the 5th day of the championships. A venue that will be able to cater for at least 400 people will be required for this event.

The estimated benefit from this single event will be approximately €30,000

The overall benefit to the local economy will therefore total (in the region of) Accommodation/Food drink: €200,000: Boat hire: €20,000: Gala presentation: €30,000

Estimated Total Dividend for local economy – Minimum: €250,000

In addition to the above it is expected that anglers from all over Ireland- who are not competing – will actually attend the event as spectators at various stages during the five days. It is not possible to provide an accurate estimate of numbers that might come to Lanesborough and Ballyleague because issues such as weather are factors that will influence anglers from around Ireland but a modest estimate of €25,000 is being included here for the moment. (That would represent just 500 visitors – in total – from around the country over the course of 5 days which is considered to be a modest estimate)

The overall estimate for the economic spin off for the local economy is therefore calculated at a quarter of a million euro.

To win the right to stage this event the Lough Ree Angling hub is preparing a formal presentation to the International officials of the angling federations who will visit here around June 15th and examine the venues.

We would be grateful if local community groups and business owners could provide us a letter of support and any other appropriate brochures you have before Friday June 11th by sending details to loughreeanglinghub@gmail.com
