Lanesboro Tourism Co-Op

Sympathy

Card Drive date change

Traditionally this time of the year we are looking forward to the Anthony Healy Memorial 25 Drive –remembering a great man and character. This year the organisers of the card drive have decided to change the date of the ‘drive’ from December to March. The new date is Friday 13th March 2015.

With so many raffles, draws and fundraising events taking place at this time of the year along with the expense of Christmas and Santa Claus the organisers thought it unfair to put another fundraising event into the calendar at this time. The proceeds of the card drive as always goes to the Mayo Roscommon Hospice.

The organisers’ looks forward to seeing you all in Clarkes in March and until then they wish you all a wonderful Christmas and special 2015.

Cake Sale for Cloontuskert NS

Cloontuskert National School are holding a cake sale after Mass next weekend, in Ballyleague Hall. There will be plenty of delicious home-baked goodies on sale.  Please pop in and support.

Community College Open Day

Lanesboro Community College will hold its open day on Thursday next 20th November.

Pupils from the local and surrounding national schools are all invited to attend and witness the wonderful work being carried out by students and teachers alike in the school. That evening both, parents and students are invited to come in, speak to individual teachers, and get an up close view of all that is happening. With 95% of the Leaving Cert students being offered a third level course this year, it can be said with absolute confidence that your child will not get a better preparation for life anywhere else. Added value includes the intimacy of a smaller school where your child will feel an integral part of a larger family and where each student is valued as an individual in his or her own right. Teachers take a personal interest in each and every student and this leads to a high level of maturity and self – confidence in all our graduates. So come along on the evening and see for yourself! The Principal’s address will take place at 7:00 sharp.

Christmas Day Run

The Annual Christmas Day Run/Walk from Newtowncashel to Lanesboro will again take place on Christmas Day and sponsorship cards are now available. Since the inception of the Multiple Sclerosis run/walk from Cashel to Lanesboro the numbers have increased no end and now the Christmas morning walk/run has become a great social event. Each year there is outstanding support both by those taking part and also by the increasing numbers who contribute generously through sponsorship. Last year exceeded expectations and it is expected that this year will again be another huge success. The organisers are looking forward to another marvellous turnout on Christmas morning adding greatly to the sense of Christmas. This walk/run is the major Multiple Sclerosis fundraiser each year and your usual most generous support will once again be greatly appreciated. The walkers will commence their journey at 11.45am and the runners will start at 12.15pm. Sponsorship cards are available from O’Brien’s, Brigid Mullooly, Jimmy Flood or any of the organising committee.

Great Cross Country Running

Last Saturday the Roscommon Championship was the final cross country run for most of our athletes. Apologies for the short notice but that was out of our control as Roscommon County Board should ideally have staged the Roscommon Cross Country in advance of the Connaught competition. Both the day and the course were much more manageable than the previous week. Several of our younger athletes had their first taste of cross country running and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Among the medal winners were Daniel Hogan, Owen Cox, James Mimnagh and Cormac O’Dowd and for the girls Aoife Kennelly and Aisling O’Dowd. Surprise of the day was Ella Hogan who ran a great race in the Under 11 girls to beat Shauna Mimnagh, a formidable and experienced cross country runner into third place. In the boy’s race in the same age group, Cian Walton who is improving with every run also secured a silver medal. Both Alannah Flood and Kieran O’Dowd secured gold medals in their respective age groups. Other medal winners were Orla Cox, Caoilinn Flood and the back to form Roisin Brennan.   Finally, best wishes to Alannah Flood who is a member of the Connaught squad in the All Ireland U12 Cross Country in Dundalk next week

Lanesboro Tidy Towns

The programme of work has started for next year’s Tidy Towns competition. Planting of a thousand wild roses, kindly sponsored by Waterways Ireland, on the river bank at the parish hall and the planting of daffodils around the Longford approach road stone sign has been completed in recent weeks. A new path/cycleway has been completed in recent weeks on the Longford Road. It is hoped to plant a row of 35 trees along this route similar to the Ballymahon road. We would be very grateful if people/families could consider sponsoring a tree for €20. The trees will be native species and it is hoped to plant them by the first week of December. If you would like to help us with this project, please let one of the committee know or contact the office at 043 3321977.In preparation for next year’s tidy towns programme, a public meeting is scheduled for Thursday 27 Nov in St Mary’s Hall at 830pm. The meeting will last one hour and the objective of the meeting to get your opinion on what you would like to see improved/started in Lanesborough. We urge you and the many clubs/organisations in Lanesborough to attend; your input will make a huge difference to the Tidy Town’s campaign.

Shane Brennan 5K

Shane Brennan was a young man, from Newtownforbes who lost his life in 2005 following a tragic accident. His memory has never been allowed to dim and as a matter of fact memorial events in his name have raised much money for very worthy causes in the past 9 years.

On St. Stephen’s Day 26th December there will be a 5K run/walk in Newtownforbes commencing with the walk at 12.45 and the run at 1pm. Registration at the Clonguish GAA Complex from 11am. Registration is €15 on the day or €10 online at www.active.com

The proceeds of this run/walk will go to the Attic House Teen Project in Longford Town. The Attic Youth café has been sited at the Temperance Hall since 2006. It is for young people between the ages of 12 and 18. It has been a remarkable success, so much so that they saw an opportunity for the club to be totally inclusive. The project was to buy and renovate a house on the Ballinalee Road. This would make the club totally inclusive and especially be wheelchair accessible.

The proposed new centre will be equipped with a recording studio, sound room, computer club, demo kitchen, meeting rooms, café area, offices, rooms for group work, individual meeting rooms and an all-weather sports area.

Attic Youth Café has received much acclaim and awards since its inception and wherever you can help to make their dream possible you are invited to do so. The Attic Youth Café is for and about the young people of Longford and these young people are making sacrifices towards their goal to ensure that everything is possible and we should encourage and support.

The Ballyleague & Lanesborough Area Mens Shed appealed to six local clubs to play their part in a special Christmas charity calendar for St Christopher’s Services and Pieta House West. At a recent presentation, Lanesboro Tri club was delighted to hand over a cheque for €8,765 to Join Our Boys Trust, funds raised from the Charity Swim held back in August.  The club organised a 3.5km (nearly Ironman distance) sponsored swim from Kilnacarrow Bridge to Lanesboro on Bank Holiday Monday in which over 80 swimmers took part. All funds have now been paid over to the charity’s fundraising committee where it will be put to great use in the fight against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and to support Archie, George and Isaac as they deal with the impact of this terrible disease. The club would like to thank everyone involved, to those who raised the sponsorship, those who volunteered their time and energy in boats and kayaks, those who served up a great spread of food in the hall, the list goes on. It would be impossible to host an event like this without the continued goodwill and support for which we are deeply thankful.
