Fr. Larney Presentation

On Friday 19th September there will be a presentation for Fr. Larney Shine who was recently moved from the parish. The event will commence with Mass at 7pm in the Church of the Holy Rosary followed by refreshments in Ballyleague Hall.

Bright Prospects for Lanesboro and Ballyleague

Over the past few months there has been great work happening on both sides of the bridge further enhancing our area. No, I am not talking about the great work being done by the Tidy Towns committees on both sides of the bridge. What I am referring to is the speed of work happening on the Lanesboro side at the new fire station, which was scheduled to be finished late in the year or into the New Year. Judging by its presence appearance it will be completed in the very near future. The new fire station was an essential necessity for the fire fighters who do so much tremendous unseen and sometimes unnoticed work year in year out. Due to the need for greater essential equipment it created the demand for a larger fire station and they will be, very soon, duly rewarded.

On the Ballyleague side the work on the river bank development has been astounding and it is wonderful to see such work being done both in further enhancing the beauty of the Shannon banks. The new wall along the back creates a great beauty as you look from the Shannon bank on the Lanesboro side. When this work is completed it will create a wonderful visual impact along with it being a great attraction.

In recent weeks, I have been informed of plans if they come to fruition will create a great excitement in the area over the coming years. Discussions are at early stages and we hope that the discussions will prove fruitful and the area will begin to prosper once again. It is a long time since there has been such prospect in the area. For too long we have been on the back foot in terms of new developments. Let us hope that this will bring both life and vibrancy back to the area and create a quality of work that will mean that no longer will all our young people have to leave to find work.

Foreign Currency Appeal in aid of Childline

The smallest donation can make a huge difference. Call in to Lanesboro Library to make your donation.

Defibrillator Course

A new defibrillator course will take place in the very near future. There will also be a refresher course. Following the recent events at a football match in Derry the need for everyone to have training in the use of a defibrillator was never more highlighted. You never know the time or the hour that your training in the use of a defibrillator will be required and your ability to save a life.

Leave your name and phone number into O’Brien’s and you will be notified of the date of the course. It is also important that those who need to do their refresher course also give in their names.

Cork Connections

What has the Lord Mayor of Cork, the Cork senior football captain and the parish of Kilgefin got in common? The Lord Mayor of Cork is Mrs Mary Shields is mother of the Cork senior football captain Michael Shields and she is a close relation to the Mrs. May Fitzpatrick, Cappagh and her family, Joe, Kilrooskey, Maura Mc Cormack, Gortgallon, Kathleen and Nuala both living in Dublin.

Need for Accommodation

Over the summer season and as late as Wednesday last a good number of people seeking accommodation called to the shop or phoned seeking accommodation in Lanesboro. It was with a heavy heart that they had to be told that we had no accommodation in the town. It would be wonderful if some people started Bed and Breakfast businesses satisfying the needs of the many people that want to stay in Lanesboro and Ballyleague. There are many local people returning to visit Lanesboro and Ballyleague but they can only come on a day trip as there is no place to overnight. Last weekend a North Lough Regatta took place over the weekend where there was a need for accommodation in the town.

With renewed interest in the area creating an expectant excitement there is a greater need for accommodation for those people coming to the area.

Lanesboro Community Games

Congratulations to our Under 13 Project Competition entrants, Áine Kennelly and Patrick Smith. Áine and Patrick presented a project entitled “The Role of the Internet” and won a 4th Place Medal at the recent National Finals of the Community Games in Athlone. Many hours were spent preparing this project at Lanesboro Library and as well as displaying it, the team ably presented it to judges and explained their work. The project will be displayed in the Library in early October and all are welcome to come and see their wonderful work.

 Community Games 14

Well done to our athletes and our artist who took part in the finals also – Orla Keane, Kieran O’Dowd, Stephen O’Dowd, Éanna Mc Grath and Eabha Healy. While there were no medals for Lanesboro in the track and field or art events this year they should be proud of their achievement in representing County Longford.

Nine Lanesboro swimmers represented County Longford and acquitted themselves very well. We had individual and relay swimmers: Seadna Ryan, Duileach Ryan, Mischa Kajan, Ernie Brunt, Evan Chalmers, Hazel Johnston, Jane Dowd, Áine Kennelly and Orla Ryan. To everyone’s delight Duileach Ryan came away with a silver medal, a huge achievement for him and for Longford.

Many thanks to Teresa Ryan for training and mentoring the swimmers in Athlone and for several weeks in advance of the finals. Thanks also to all of the parents for their support.

Saturday night Disruption

On Saturday night last the peace of the town of Lanesboro was shatter by two hideous acts. The first was on Main Street where the window at Xlntee was shattered in the early hours of the morning.

The second was in Church View – a very quiet residential estate – where a car was severely damaged and a large ceramic pot was thrown through the window of a house in a totally unprovoked attack. The occupants of the house a lady and her two daughters were left terrified during the events.

If you have any knowledge of either incident please contact Lanesboro Gardai 3321102 of Longford Gardai 3350570. It is imperative that the peace and tranquillity of our area should never be threatened and your information to the Gardai will ensure that the like should never occur again.

Rathcline Ladies

On Saturday last the ladies footballers played Colmcille in the senior B championship. The ladies were 5 points down at half time but on the resumption of the game the effort increased as did the football and in the end they over turned the half time deficit to win their way into the final with four points to spare. They will now play the final on Sunday next in Farneyhoogan at 12 noon where they will take on Clonguish. Good luck ladies.

In case you were not aware the clothes collection is back up and running and if you have clothes you want to dispose off give Mike or Madaleine a ring and they will arrange collection or drop off.

Shannon Gaels

The excellent results for the club this season continues as there were many fine results again last week – the only blip on the chart was our U16 team who wound up their season with a defeat to Southern Gaels. Padraig Shanley and David Mulvihill must be thanked for their great efforts throughout the season. All players and their parents must also be thanked for their time for training and matches.

Our U12 team qualified for their final when they had a great win over Sean Connolly’s during last week.

Our U14 team qualified for their championship final on 27th September when they had a tremendous victory over Colmcille. They will now meet Carrick Sarsfields in the final.

Our minors have qualified for the minor B final and on Wednesday last in the A championship played a stunning draw with Slashers in Farneyhoogan. Those present were taken aback by the quality of both sides and the extremely high standard of football they served up. They now play Kenagh/Moydow and a victory here will take them to the semi final. We look forward to the lads maintaining their standards and determination over the coming weeks where greater rewards will be forthcoming if this hard work continues.

The minor club commiserates with the senior club on the defeat of the Intermediates in the county semi final.

Well done to the senior ladies club who had a fabulous win on Sunday last and have qualified for the Senior B final where the ladies will take on Clonguish on Sunday next in Pearse Park.

Rathcline GAA

Our Intermediate team bowed out of the championship on Saturday evening. It was an exciting and end to end match. Rathcline started brightly going 5 points to 1 up, but Connolly’s regrouped and a goal for them changed the complexion of the first half. Rathcline played some of their best football all year, and showed a hunger in the middle third that allowed our forwards to take their scores. The second half saw Rathcline having to go for the win. Again their heads could have dropped when Connolly’s scored a second goal, but to the lads credit they fought back. A Michael Morrissey goal set up a pulsating finish and with Liam Connerton finding the net, the game was a draw heading into injury time. Rathcline mounted a few attacks but no score was forth coming, alas for the Rathcline team, Connolly’s took a couple of scores with time nearly up. At this point I must thank all the players for their hard graft at training all year, not many would see the effort and sacrifice they put in, but it was very much respected from management. Also to the trainers and management, never an easy job, they guided the team to a semi final and I can say personally it was a privilege working with them. Its over for 2014, but then again there is always another year, that’s the wonderful thing about football.

The hurling final tickets were won by Adie Farrell, second prize went to Vera Sullivan, and third prize went to Luke Cullen. Thanks to all who supported this draw. We will be bringing out the same €2 lines cards for the football final. A mouth watering clash between Kerry and Donegal, and someone will win two tickets to this final, the cards will be out in all shops around the town and parish this week, please support.

There was no lotto jackpot winner this week. The numbers drawn were 6.9,11,21,33 and 38. The €25 weekly winners were Frank and Mairead Nally Roscommon, Mark Casey Lehery, Mary Kelly Rathcline Road and Frank Curley Ballyleague.

Preparations are well under way for our strictly come dancing event with Faithleach’s. This is turning into something very special with fantastic planning gone into the event; we will have more news in the next few weeks. Dancers, judges and venue all set up and this dual event will not disappoint!

Rathcline Ladies

What a brilliant result for our senior ladies at the weekend. The team took on Colmcille in Colmcille in the semi final of the Senior B championship. A wonderful blend of youth and experience saw the girls battle back from being 5 points down at half time to eventually winning the game on a scoreline of 3-12 to 3-8. The Rathcline ladies were actually up by 10 points at one stage but Colmcille got 2 goals which brought them right back into proceedings. The ladies showed guts and determination and it was a great team performance. The final will be against Clonguish in Pearse Park this weekend. These ladies have been training hard all year and your support for the ladies would be appreciated. Please check the fixture list or facebook for time of match. The final promises to be a great match and we wish the team and management the very best of luck!

Our Minor team continue to train and are looking forward to their next batch of games in the coming weeks.

Finally the club would like to wish all the players heading off to college the very best of luck!
