Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
G2 Festival
Sunday night brought the curtains down on the second festival in Lanesboro. Over the weekend the weather did everything in its power to dampen the great line-up of events. It was not to succeed in any major way. The now traditional opening event Friday night ’The Kiddies Disco’ with DJ Stephen Donohoe set the tone when a huge number of kids came along to make the disco a great success as they danced and had an ocean of fun in the marquee. The excitement on their faces told the whole story. DJ Mike Darcy followed and he had the assembled dancing away until the arrival of Brendan Shine. The night may have been bad outside but the assembled crowd were totally oblivious to the weather conditions as they danced the night away. It was a tremendous performance from Brendan and his band, the comments afterwards only endorsed the wonderful night had by everyone.
Saturday morning, there was a tour of Lanesboro’s Power Station at 11am. Despite the inclement weather conditions, which obscured the real beauty of the area from the viewing tower, the attendees got a wonderful insight into the running and workings of the power station. Guides Mervyn Johnston, Cathal Chapman and Louis Rhatigan gave a wonderful tour and everyone left with a wealth of knowledge about our local station. This tour proved to create a huge interest for so many people, it could have been booked at least seven times over, and the many that arrived on spec, and were to be disappointed, on Saturday was amazing. DJ Mike Darcy again opened the dancing proceedings with his wonderful sound before the highlight of the night Johnny Brady took to the stage. He was his inimitable self and it is no wonder he is classed in the top 5 bands on the scene at the moment. It was a fantastic night dancing and a most notable feature was the amount of the younger generation dancing to the country sounds. It brought back memories of dance halls of bygone days; it is great to see the younger generation out dancing and enjoying themselves to live bands once again.
Sunday began with the Gathering Mass, celebrated by Fr James Leavy, in the church; made the more special by it being a Leavy Anniversary Mass. Leavy’s, Main Street, were and still are one of the leading family in our community; Patsy is a leading member of the Gathering committee. Their uncle Eddie Farrell formerly of Tullyvrane was one of, if not, the first treasure of the Rathcline club. The choir for the mass was the excellent Minor Club choir and finally another of the most committee member of the G2 committee, Fergie Feeney was the reader at Mass. The Mass showed the great interlink there is between the festival committee and the parish community.
The ‘walk in the woods’ sponsored by Ballyleague Men’s Shed was wonderful with expert analysis of that is edible in our woods by Brendan Farrell, Ardagh was affected by a smaller than expected turnout. The weather put a damper on what was very enlightening and informative. Those that attended enjoyed it immensely.
From 3pm to 6pm Céilí in the marquee with Johnny Duffy and Rising the Dust and rising the dust the dancers surely will. Céilí’s are wonderful occasions and festival céilí’s are wondrous. Be there and enjoy a wonderful afternoon.
Unfortunately, the Family Afternoon and Picnic at the small harbour had to be deferred to a later date due to weather conditions. Look out for this event when it happens as there are many games for young and old by James O’Flaherty, as well as a raft race, where locals will have made up their own raft for the race. It promises to be very exciting.
The Céilí proved to be a great afternoon dancing for the many that enjoy Irish and set dancing and having it in the marquee made for a great atmosphere. People travelled from far and wide for the event and it was a pleasure to have the two Margaret’s Gillen and Mullooly welcoming everyone to Lanesboro’s G2 festival.
Story Horse opened the final night’s proceedings. These young local lads are excellent musicians and with the correct break at the right time, there is no doubt, they will hit the high spots countrywide. It is great to have a young local and talented band in our midst. Whitewater followed and what a great decision to book them. A Mayo based group who were appearing in Lanesboro for the first time really made their mark on the local scene with a tremendous performance. A wonderful crowd turned up and really appreciated their great sound. The night closed with a collaboration of local DJ’s Kieran Feeney aka Duff and Tommy Keenan aka Tommy K. Last year they closed the festival with a very special night and last Sunday night was their encore as again they brought the place down.
Despite the weather attempting to spoil the festival all the events were reasonably well supported and a great time was had by all. There was a hard working staff on duty all weekend and the work was really appreciated by everyone. All I can say is a big thank you to everyone for celebrating in Lanesboro over the weekend and congratulate the committee and staff for a job well done.
Wedding
The marriage took place at St. Mary’s Church Lanesboro on Saturday 26th July of Stephen Rooney, eldest son of Joe and Mary Rooney, Rathcline and Valerie Brogan, daughter of John and mary Brogan, Ballyleague. Bestman was Joey Rooney, brother of the groom and groomsman was Colin Rooney, also brother of the groom. The chief bridesmaid was Aisling Brogan sister of the bride and bridesmaid was Lisa Mc Cloat, sister of the bride. The pageboy was Evan Rooney, son of Valerie and Stephen. The marriage ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Michael Reilly. The wedding reception took place in the Mullingar Park Hotel.
We wish the happy couple many years of wedded happiness.
Harvest Festival
The Harvest Festival will take place, this year, in Newtowncashel on Sunday 31st August. Leading up to the event there will be a Harvest Festival Table Quiz in the Peer Inn, Lisnacusha on Friday night next 8th August at 9.30pm. The proceeds of the table quiz will go to St. Christopher’s Longford a charity that should be close to the hearts of everyone in the county. Please come along on Friday night take part in the quiz whilst have lots of fun in the company of many friends.
On Friday night 22nd August in Gav’s bar Kenagh, the official Press night will take place at 9.30. The committee welcomes everyone to come along and be part of the launch of this year’s festival.
Finally, you are reminded to come along to support the Harvest Festival and Working Field Day in Newtowncashel on Sunday 31st August. The festivities will kick off at 12noon and it will continue until 6pm – 6 hours of great entertainment.

Last Saturday and Sunday the Irish Wheelchair Association held its annual church gate collection at all masses in Lanesboro. The association would like to thank everyone for their most generous contributions to their cause.

Gun Club AGM
Lanesborough Gun Club AGM to be held this Friday night 8th August at 9pm in Adie Farrell’s meeting room. All members are asked to attend. Gun Club Subscriptions are also now due and should be paid by all members as soon as possible.
Rathcline Lotto not won
The Rathcline GAA lotto took place on Saturday night last the six numbers drawn were 11, 24, 26, 36, and 45. There was nobody with four of the numbers and the jackpot of €1300 was not won. The four winners of the €25 were; Sean Hogan, c/o Barry and Sinead Hogan, Ballyleague, Michael Shanley, Killashee, Kevin Chapman with James and Cathal Mulvihill, Newtowncashel, being the final ticket out. The next draw will take place on Saturday night next for a jackpot of €1,400.
Lough Ree Golfing Society
The next outing of the society is our captain, Mike Brennan’s day to Royal Tara Golf Course, Navan.
The date is Wednesday the 13th August and the tee is booked from 11.30 to 12.30.
We look forward to a wonderful day at this lovely mature woodland course.

The Clonguish Bingo will take place in Newtownforbes on this coming Sunday 10th August at 3pm. There will be €2,500 in prize money.
Charity Concert – The Last Rose of Summer
Local pianist, Peter Regan returns to St. John’s Church, Battery Road Longford on Friday, August 22nd at 8:00 p.m. to give another electrifying concert, “The Last Rose of Summer”. All proceeds will go to Co. Longford Hospice and St. John’s Church. Joining him will be violinist, Phoebe White and mezzo-soprano, Heather Fogarty. Tickets are €15, students €10 and are available from Denniston’s Music Shop, Longford or text 086 256 0408. Come along for an evening of magical entertainment in aid of a worthy cause.

The Irish Kidney Association will be having their annual church gate collection throughout the county next weekend – 9th & 10th August
Strictly Come Dancing
The Rathcline and St. Faithleach’s clubs have come together to host what will be a very special and unique evening out when they will host ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ next November. Both clubs are actively seeking dancers for the event and you are asked to be positive in your response if you are approached.
Strictly Come Dancing has been a big hit everywhere it has been held and I am sure that it will be no different when both clubs come to stage it in November. The merging of the clubs for this event is a huge bonus as it allows the talented from both sides of the bridge to come together and produced a night never to be missed or forgotten.
Don’t worry about your dancing skills as the entire event will be co-ordinated and choreographed by the Midlands Drama School over an eight week period.
Don’t wait to be asked to come on board as one of the dancers just give your name to Lorraine 0876827966 or Helen 0860809377 and these ladies will take you through what will be required. Come along and be part of a wonderful night as well as get trained to dance over an eight week period.
Annual Pilgrimage to Lough Derg
The annual day pilgrimage to Lough Derg will take place on Sunday 24th August leaving Lanesboro at 7am. The bus will travel via Scramogue, Rooskey and Carrick on Shannon. As the bus booked is from Farrelly’s and will leave Kenagh at 6.40am and will also pick up at Derryhaun at 6.50am.

Rathcline GAA
Our Intermediate team suffered a defeat at the hands of Carrickedmond, in the league, on Saturday last. Carrickedmond played with purpose and strength for most of the game and in dreadful conditions the Rathcline team never got a foothold in the match. Rathcline only registered 2 points in the first half and Carrickedmond scored goals and points with ease. The second half Rathcline re grouped and started to have a real go at Carrickedmond. Our lads made the score line look a little better when we scored 1-2 without reply near the end of the match. The final score was Carrickedmond 1 – 10 Rathcline 1 – 6.
All focus is now on the 2nd round of the Intermediate championship. Rathcline take on Ballymore in Emmet Park, Killoe at 8 o clock on Friday evening. After an impressive win over Legan the boys must take on Ballymore who after beating Grattans will be themselves looking to make it two wins out of two games. The lads have been training hard and your support for the team would be appreciated. We wish the management and team the very best of luck!
A brilliant day out was had by all whom attended the Galway races. A decent fundraiser for the club, it has become a great social occasion. By all accounts it was a thrilling day of punting, socialising and dancing. Thanks to the executive members who prepared the event and to everyone who supported, sponsored and went along on the day.
There was no winner of the lotto jackpot; next week’s jackpot is €1400. The weekly winners were, Sean Hogan Ballyleague, Michael Shanley Killashee, Kevin “Chappy” Chapman, and James and Cathal Mulvihill Cashel.
Big shout to Sinead Farrell, daughter of the legendary duo Mary and Fintan. Sinead captained the Longford ladies to Leinster success in football. The club are proud of Sinead and the other Rathcline players who represented their county. Well done to all.
Just another reminder that the club are looking for volunteers for the strictly come dancing fundraiser later on in the year. This promises to be an exciting night, Faithleachs and Rathcline are coming together for a strictly come dancing show and already there is great interest. Rathcline Minor Club
Big thanks to Tracy Tobin who led the Rathcline choir at the G2 mass. Lots of singing talent in our Minor set up and well done to all involved.
There are a lot games at minor level coming up, here are a few dates for your diary, U 14 c’ship the 12th of August, the U 16 c ’ship gets underway Tuesday the 5th of August.
The U 12’s are playing Edgeworthstown this Tuesday evening in Clonbonny. The Minor championship kicks off on Monday the 11th of August. For all these games it’s imperative that parents come out and support the future stars of our club. We would like to wish all the management and teams the very best of luck in their respective championships.
The Minor Club sports/fun day had to be cancelled after monsoon conditions engulfed Lanesboro on Saturday. The day will be rescheduled.
All of the club would like to congratulate the G2 committee on a great August bank holiday. It took a lot of work and well done to all the volunteers and stewards that took part.
Rathcline Ladies Club
The last championship senior game takes place in Clonbonny on Wednesday evening at 7.30. The ladies take on Killoe, and we wish them the very best of luck!
St. Faithleach’s GAA
Junior Ladies – Junior A Championship: Our Junior Ladies have a game against Padraig Pearses tomorrow Monday 4th August @ 12.00pm in Woodmount.
Senior Football Championship: Our Seniors have a Championship game, against Western Gaels, this coming Sunday 10th August @ 3.30pm in Ballyleague.
Senior Football League – O’Rourke Cup: Our Seniors were defeated by Roscommon Gaels on Friday evening last in Lisnamult. Final Score: St. Faithleachs 0-09 Roscommon Gaels 1-10.
Junior Men – D4 League: Our Junior Men were defeated by St. Aidans on Wednesday evening last at home. Final Score: St. Faithleachs 1-07 St. Aidans 3-04.
Minor Men – D4 Championship: Our Minor Men have a game against Kilbride this coming Friday 8th August @ 7.00pm in Kilbride.
Minor Ladies – D1 Championship: Our Minor Ladies had a win over Boyle on Tuesday evening last at home. Final Score – St. Faithleachs 4-09 Boyle 4-08. Team: Team: R. Costello, N. Hegarty, N. U14 Boys – D3 Championship County Final: Our U14 Boys are through to the D3 Championship Final on Friday 15th August. Best of luck to all players on the panel along with their management.
U14 Girls – Summer League County Final: Best of luck to our U14 girls and their management in the Summer League Final, this coming Sunday 10th August, against St. Marys at 7.00pm in Ballyleague. Presentation of Féile Medals will take place in the clubhouse following the final.
U12 Boys – D3 Spring League County Final: Our U12 boys are through to the League Final. Best of luck to all the players on the panel along with their management.
U10 Boys: Well done to our U10 boys who were runners-up in the Bernie Browne Shield in the Oran Inter County Tournament.
Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others: St. Faithleachs Mothers and Others, training continues Tuesday evening at 8.00pm.

Roger Casements GAA Visit: St. Faithleachs GAA Club welcomed Roger Casements GAA Club from Coventry on Saturday last. Following their arrival, the Casements Ladies took to the field to play against our Junior Ladies in what was a great game. The Casements Men played against our Junior Men, a tough game, with one of the highlights being a goal scored by Steve Ormsby (Snr) for the Casements!! Celebrations took place in the clubhouse on Saturday night in the presence of St. Faithleachs GAA Club President, Mickey Kelly & Roger Casements GAA lifelong President, Bill Fahy. Chairman Derek Thompson welcomed all from Roger Casements to the Club & dedicated the celebrations in recognition to special guest, Jim Browne; the link between both clubs and a true GAA gent. Presentation was made to Roger Casements Chairman, Ciaran Boyle by Eamon Bolger who was involved with St. Faithleachs GAA Clubs 1st trip to Roger Casements in 1985. A hugely enjoyable event was had by all and we wish to thank all who travelled from Coventry for the event. Many thanks to all who helped out in the organisation of this event, to all who supplied food and refreshments, music on the night and all who helped out in many ways.

Strictly Come Dancing – Fundraising Event: On November 22nd St Faithleachs will join forces with our near neighbours Rathcline, in an event the like of not seen before in the locality. The two clubs will come together in producing a “Strictly Come Dancing” event, coordinated & choreographed by the Midlands Drama School. Members from both clubs are presently working together to organise this event, which is sure to be a night not to be missed. Both clubs have sent forward members to form an organising committee. This committee is now looking for parties interested in taking part in the event. All couples will go through an 8 week period of training and coaching from the Midlands Drama School. Local pianist, Peter Regan returns to St. John’s Church, Battery Road Longford on Friday, August 22nd at 8:00 p.m. to give another electrifying concert, “The Last Rose of Summer”. All proceeds will go to Co. Longford Hospice and St. John’s Church. Joining him will be violinist, Phoebe White and mezzo-soprano, Heather Fogarty. Strictly Come Dancing
The Rathcline and St. Faithleach’s clubs have come together to host what will be a very special and unique evening out when they will host ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ next November. Both clubs are actively seeking dancers for the event and you are asked to be positive in your response if you are approached.
Strictly Come Dancing has been a big hit everywhere it has been held and I am sure that it will be no different when both clubs come to stage it in November. The merging of the clubs for this event is a huge bonus as it allows the talented from both sides of the bridge to come together and produced a night never to be missed or forgotten.
Don’t worry about your dancing skills as the entire event will be co-ordinated and choreographed by the Midlands Drama School over an eight week period.

Annual Pilgrimage to Lough Derg
The annual day pilgrimage to Lough Derg will take place on Sunday 24th August leaving Lanesboro at 7am. The bus will travel via Scramogue, Rooskey and Carrick on Shannon. As the bus booked is from Farrelly’s and will leave Kenagh at 6.40am and will also pick up at Derryhaun at 6.50am.

Rathcline GAA
Our Intermediate team suffered a defeat at the hands of Carrickedmond, in the league, on Saturday last. Carrickedmond played with purpose and strength for most of the game and in dreadful conditions the Rathcline team never got a foothold in the match. Rathcline only registered 2 points in the first half and Carrickedmond scored goals and points with ease. The second half Rathcline re grouped and started to have a real go at Carrickedmond. Our lads made the score line look a little better when we scored 1-2 without reply near the end of the match. The final score was Carrickedmond 1 – 10 Rathcline 1 – 6.
All focus is now on the 2nd round of the Intermediate championship. Rathcline take on Ballymore in Emmet Park, Killoe at 8 o clock on Friday evening. After an impressive win over Legan the boys must take on Ballymore who after beating Grattans will be themselves looking to make it two wins out of two games. The lads have been training hard and your support for the team would be appreciated. We wish the management and team the very best of luck!
A brilliant day out was had by all whom attended the Galway races. A decent fundraiser for the club, it has become a great social occasion. By all accounts it was a thrilling day of punting, socialising and dancing. Thanks to the executive members who prepared the event and to everyone who supported, sponsored and went along on the day.
There was no winner of the lotto jackpot; next week’s jackpot is €1400. The weekly winners were, Sean Hogan Ballyleague, Michael Shanley Killashee, Kevin “Chappy” Chapman, and James and Cathal Mulvihill Cashel.
Big shout to Sinead Farrell, daughter of the legendary duo Mary and Fintan. Sinead captained the Longford ladies to Leinster success in football. The club are proud of Sinead and the other Rathcline players who represented their county. Well done to all.
Just another reminder that the club are looking for volunteers for the strictly come dancing fundraiser later on in the year. This promises to be an exciting night, Faithleachs and Rathcline are coming together for a strictly come dancing show and already there is great interest. Rathcline Minor Club
Big thanks to Tracy Tobin who led the Rathcline choir at the G2 mass. Lots of singing talent in our Minor set up and well done to all involved.
There are a lot games at minor level coming up, here are a few dates for your diary, U 14 c’ship the 12th of August, the U 16 c ’ship gets underway Tuesday the 5th of August.
The U 12’s are playing Edgeworthstown this Tuesday evening in Clonbonny. The Minor championship kicks off on Monday the 11th of August. For all these games it’s imperative that parents come out and support the future stars of our club. We would like to wish all the management and teams the very best of luck in their respective championships.
The Minor Club sports/fun day had to be cancelled after monsoon conditions engulfed Lanesboro on Saturday. The day will be rescheduled.
All of the club would like to congratulate the G2 committee on a great August bank holiday. It took a lot of work and well done to all the volunteers and stewards that took part.
Rathcline Ladies Club
The last championship senior game takes place in Clonbonny on Wednesday evening at 7.30. The ladies take on Killoe, and we wish them the very best of luck!

Senior Football Championship: Our Seniors have a Championship game, against Western Gaels, this coming Sunday 10th August @ 3.30pm in Ballyleague.
Senior Football League – O’Rourke Cup: Our Seniors were defeated by Roscommon Gaels on Friday evening last in Lisnamult. Final Score: St. Faithleachs 0-09 Roscommon Gaels 1-10.
Junior Men – D4 League: Our Junior Men were defeated by St. Aidans on Wednesday evening last at home. Final Score: St. Faithleachs 1-07 St. Aidans 3-04.
Minor Men – D4 Championship: Our Minor Men have a game against Kilbride this coming Friday 8th August @ 7.00pm in Kilbride.

U14 Girls – Summer League County Final: Best of luck to our U14 girls and their management in the Summer League Final, this coming Sunday 10th August, against St. Marys at 7.00pm in Ballyleague. Presentation of Féile Medals will take place in the clubhouse following the final.

Roger Casements GAA Visit: St. Faithleachs GAA Club welcomed Roger Casements GAA Club from Coventry on Saturday last. Following their arrival, the Casements Ladies took to the field to play against our Junior Ladies in what was a great game. The Casements Men played against our Junior Men, a tough game, with one of the highlights being a goal scored by Steve Ormsby (Snr) for the Casements!! Celebrations took place in the clubhouse on Saturday night in the presence of St. Faithleachs GAA Club President, Mickey Kelly & Roger Casements GAA lifelong President, Bill Fahy. Chairman Derek Thompson welcomed all from Roger Casements to the Club & dedicated the celebrations in recognition to special guest, Jim Browne; the link between both clubs and a true GAA gent. Presentation was made to Roger Casements Chairman, Ciaran Boyle by Eamon Bolger who was involved with St. Faithleachs GAA Clubs 1st trip to Roger Casements in 1985. A hugely enjoyable event was had by all and we wish to thank all who travelled from Coventry for the event. Many thanks to all who helped out in the organisation of this event, to all who supplied food and refreshments, music on the night and all who helped out in many ways.

Strictly Come Dancing – Fundraising Event: On November 22nd St Faithleachs will join forces with our near neighbours Rathcline, in an event the like of not seen before in the locality. The two clubs will come together in producing a “Strictly Come Dancing” event, coordinated & choreographed by the Midlands Drama School. Members from both clubs are presently working together to organise this event, which is sure to be a night not to be missed. Both clubs have sent forward members to form an organising committee. This committee is now looking for parties interested in taking part in the event. All couples will go through an 8 week period of training and coaching from the Midlands Drama School.
