Strictly Come Dancing has been a big hit everywhere it has been held and I am sure that it will be no different when both clubs come to stage it in November. The merging of the clubs for this event is a huge bonus as it allows the talented from both sides of the bridge to come together and produced a night never to be missed or forgotten.

Lough Ree Defibrillator committee – A History
Lough Ree Defibrillator group is a local voluntary group, set up in 2007. Initially donations were collected from households within the Lanesboro Ballyleague area and the sum collected went to purchase four defibrillators and six air conditioned cabinets for the area. These, along with two others kindly donated by ESB are what the committee has to maintain in the area on an ongoing basis. They are placed strategically around the area in the specifically designed air conditioned cabinets. The AED’s are set up on the front wall of Fergus Hanley Hardware, Ballyleague, on the outside wall of St. Mary’s Hall, on the front wall of Cloontuskert National School, on the outer wall at Cullen’s Filling station, on the wall at Harold’s Cross, Rathcline and on the outside wall at Mark Casey’s, Lehery.
Photo compliments of Joe Mc Grath
Members of the Lough Ree Defibrillator Group, L to R, Michael Hanley, Ronan Collier, Evelyn Rooney, instructor, Regina Donnellan, Kevin Madden, instructor, and Joe Mullooly
The committee is also involved in training responders from the locality – Lanesboro, Ballyleague and Curraghroe on how to perform CPR and the use of AED. There is in the region of 60 people trained in our community as trained responders. There are two local instructors who provide the initial training for responders. This is then followed up with skills nights where responders refresh their training which is important because this training recertifies all responders and extends their certification. Responders are required to be recertified every two years so training continues on a regular basis to keep everyone in certification.
The committee is now seeking additional people to become trained responders. The course is free of charge and if you would like to be a responder please leave your name in with Martina or Joe O’Brien or phone them at-3321107 and leave your name and contact details.
Last year, the business people of the area contributed handsomely towards the buying of batteries for the defibrillators. The pads for the defibrillator have to be purchased every two years and batteries every seven years. These purchases prove to be quite expensive and we are grateful to the local business community for their most generous support.
The annual Church Gate collection will take place on the weekend 23rd/24th August and the committee is once again seeking your most generous support.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Anne, Conor and Darren Mc Guinness, Curragh Rua on the death of Anne’s father Mick Mc Guinness, Portarlington last week. We also extend our sympathy to her brothers Michael and Declan. Mick, his wife Carmel and family moved to Lanesboro some years ago to work in the power station. They instantly become popular figures in the area until they moved back to their native Portarlington following Mick’s retirement. Mick’s death came suddenly and our sympathy to his immediate and extended family and friends.

Rathcline GAA
Well done to our Rathcline team who defeated Legan in the first round of the intermediate championship on Sunday. The score at half time was 1 6 to 3pts in favour of Rathcline. A tight scrappy affair in the first half, with Rathcline taking their scoring opportunities well. Legan played with the wind but Rathcline were staunch in defence and worked the ball out well on many occasions. Again it was the middle third where the main battle took place. Some decent hand passing and quick ball into the forward line kept Legan on the back foot. Legan came out with purpose in the second half, it was at times a very tough tackling match, but Rathcline held their discipline and created and scored an excellent second goal. The defence worked hard again for the remainder of the match as Legan tried in vain to get themselves back into the game. An excellent save from a penalty by David Mulvihill in the last minute meant the score line at the end was Rathcline 2 8 Legan 5 points. Our next match is at the weekend where we take on Carrickedmond in the league. Thanks for all the support, please check the fixture list for time and venue of the match and to the team and management we say well done!
Clonbonny played host to the first round of two Intermediate championship games on Saturday. Big thanks to all who helped out stewarding, lining the pitch and getting the logistics right for a sizeable crowd at both matches. Very much appreciated by the club.
Strictly Come Dancing!!
Rathcline and Faithleachs are coming together to hold a Come Dancing fund raising night later in the year. We are looking for anyone, young, or not so young, from both sides of the bridge to take part in what promises to be a really enjoyable event. There will be training provided for all our dancers leading up to the night. We are hoping to get dancers from the Ladies Club both senior and minor and the senior and minor men. You can contact Lorraine Farrell on 0876827966 or Pat Connerton on 0861617501.
There was no outright winner of the Rathcline lotto this week. The numbers drawn were 1, 20, 22, 23, 29 and 45. The €25 winners were Gerry Byrne Cloontuskert, Brigid Mullooly Lehery, Ryan and Blain Fallon Lisrevagh and Charlie McDermott Lisnacusha.
Rathcline Minor Club
Well done to our minor team who beat Slashers last Monday. The team are now in a shield semi-final. Keep up the good work. The U 16’s beat Southern Gaels in the last game of the special league. It was an epic comeback from our lads and well done to all involved. The U 14’s had a challenge against Kenagh/Moydow and won so things going well at that level also. The U 12’s had a great day in Croke Park, all well behaved we hear, thanks to the organisers and adults who looked after our U 12’s. The minor club are holding a sports day on Saturday of the bank holiday. The club are looking for stewards to help out on the day. It’s a nice way to showcase the talent that’s involved in the minor club but with every event we need volunteers, if you would like to help out please contact Sean Kenny, Brendan Keane and Seadna Ryan.
Finally if anyone is interested in the Galway Races there are a few seats left. A class day out as what was proved last year and the senior, ladies and minor club are heading off again on Monday next. Please contact Sean Kenny if interested.
Rathcline Ladies
The spot light fell on the U 14s girls last week as they took on Clonguish in the final. Pearse Park was the venue and our girls who played brilliantly. They were too strong at times for Clonguish but that was down to the work ethic and skill on show. The link up play, defending and attacking was of a very high standard and the future looks good if the girls all stay together. A wonderful team performance and some excellent score taking saw Rathcline run out emphatic winners. Well done to the whole squad and also to the management team of Steve and Marie Peters, Mike Greene and Madeline Murray.
