Have you signed up yet?

Tax reclaim forms are still available in the porch of St. Mary’s church. With your support in filling out and returning the forms offers the parish the opportunity to recouping this money and use it towards the repaying of the outstanding debt on our now magnificently refurbished church. This is money that you have already paid in tax and it is a great opportunity for your parish to avail of that money. This is applicable to PAYE workers and I urge everyone to get a form in the church porch and return it as soon as possible.

Book Launched

It is with great sorrow we mourn the passing of Ann Collins Skelly.  Ann came into our midst from Dublin and made a huge impression on Writing groups and Book Clubs in the county with her great love of literature. Her own book “Foolish Pride” was published in 2012 with a Lanesborough connection is now available in O’Brien’s.  Her friends and admirers are the poorer for her passing.

Sympathy

We learned recently of the death in Manchester of Tommy Coyle, formerly Knock. Tommy has spent the 50 years in England and he will be fondly remembered by the older generation of locals. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife and family in Manchester and to his brother Jackie, sisters Dinah, Vera, Teresa and Irene.

Church Bell history

Recently the church bell has again begun to ring again announcing ten minutes to mass and also for the angelus at 12noon and 6pm. For us townie we remember, during school holiday time and weekends for the late Alex Coyle to come to ring the bell by the bell rope. The excitement of going back up to new heights with the rope will always be a special memory.

The same bell is still in place and has been in place since Fr. William Murray purchased it and had it placed in the bell tower in 1910. It was one of the two bells originally in St. Mel’s Cathedral before Fr. Murray bought it and had it installed in the bell tower of St. Mary’s.

Your support will be greatly appreciated. Admission is optional.

Join our Boys is a magnificent cause creating greater awareness aboutDuchenne Muscular Dystrophy(DMD) and supporting three young people from the once family in Roscommon that are suffering from DMD.

A major fundraising venture is ongoing to raise funds for the young people, Archie, aged seven and three year old twins, George and Isaac, who are terminally ill, to create a house that will be specially adapted to make their life and that of their parents so much easier for the three brave and cherished young men who light up the hearts and minds of everybody.

The following piece, below, is taken from the ‘Join Our Boys’ website and it reflects the agonizing time their parents Padraic and Paula are facing over the next number of years and I hope that you can and will help in whatever you can to help in this drive. There are many initiatives happening and please play your part.

Like most parents, our dreams have always been centered round our children:

1. That the boys will grow to be healthy adults.

2. That the boys will be happy.

3. That the boys will respect themselves.

4. That the boys will respect others.

5. If we are very lucky, they will choose a career that will enable them to contribute positively to society.

On the 9th of November 2012 our lives & dreams were changed beyond comprehension. The dreams we had for our boys were changed forever. A diagnosis of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is devastating. It is a 100% fatal, neuromuscular disease that affects 1 in every 3,500 boys and each year 20,000 children worldwide are born with DMD; 99% of these are boys. There are no words to describe how it feels to learn that one of your precious children has a terminal illness, which has no cure. Sadly for our family we have three children who are terminally ill. A diagnosis of DMD means that our children are unlikely to live beyond their late teens or early 20s.
