Weekfield National School – Past Pupils Re-Union
It is proposed to hold a re-union of past pupils of Weekfield National School later in the year. If anyone has old school photos, stories, etc. or any feedback the committee would be grateful to receive them. St. Patrick’s Day Parade
The uniqueness of our parade starting in a different parish, county, parish, province and diocese is something that makes our parade inimitable has gained great attention and comment from many sources. This is our opportunity to add to the uniqueness by making the parade bigger and better than anything gone previously.
Many clubs and associations are already putting their plans into being as they construct their floats for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Ballyleague and Lanesboro.
Make you plans to come along and make the day another very special and memorable day in our community.
Fair Day
Saturday 1st March is just two weeks away and all is being prepared for the annual re-enactment of Lanesboro Fair Day. The committee is now a hive of activity and the full schedule of the day is almost in place. They are working hard to ensure a smooth running of what is always a very special day in our town.
If you have not made it back yet for the ‘Fair’ then make Saturday 1st March a date to be in Lanesboro.
The ‘Fair’ this year returns to the street from the church right back down to the corner. We again look forward to that area filled to capacity with horses, ponies, foals, donkeys and many other animals and side shows that annually makes this day a very special day and brings back memories of the Lanesboro Fair of old. The sight of the wheeling and dealing is a sight to behold and the distinctiveness has to be seen to be believed. The ‘Fair’ rolls back the years and memories for many people of an age that remembers all the fairs throughout the area. It is also a wonderful experience for the younger people to see what a traditional fair day was like and all the events surrounding it.
Part of the day’s events is the Dog show and the enthusiastic members in charge of the Dog Show are presently busy completing the arrangements. It is now time to be grooming and training your dog for what is always a very popular sideshow at Lanesboro Fair.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Geraldine and Tom Gavigan and family, Lough Bannow, on the death on Saturday 8th February of Ann Hayes, Corteen, Longford sister of Geraldine.
Pilgrimage to Lourdes
The annual Ardagh and Clonmacnois Pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place this year from Tuesday 27th May to Sunday 1st June and the pilgrimage director is Monsignor Bernard Noonan, Moate and his phone number is 090 64 81180. Rev. Michael Scanlon will take charge of the special section for the sick and his phone number is 090 64 57122. Table Quiz in Peer
The Rathcline senior club are holding a fundraising Table Quiz in the Peer Inn on Friday next 21st February. The night promises to be a night of fun and a serious test of knowledge with special questions set to try even the best and funniest. Come along and test your knowledge and have a wonderful night. A table of four costs just €40 and there will be a raffle on the night. Everyone is asked to be seated at 9.25pm for a 9.30pm start. This is a night not to be missed.
Living well with Arthritis
A course designed to help people with arthritis will start in St. Mary’s parish Hallo on Tuesday 11th March at 7pm. The course will consist of six weekly sessions and is of a 2½ hour workshop each week. Completing this programme allows you to rely less on health professionals, manage your pain, reduce your fatigue, introduces exercise and relaxation into your daily life, increases your self-confidence to manage your arthritis and improves your sense of well-being. Bereavement Course
A six week course for adults, who have experienced the death of a relative, starts in the Family Centre, St. Mel’s Road, Longford. The course will commence on Wednesday week 5th March at 8pm. The course will be facilitated by experienced facilitators. Down through the years this course has proved to be very helpful. Register your Child Now
With the poor turnout for registration a few weeks back it was decided by the Shannon Gaels club executive to offer parents another date to register their sons to play football in the coming year. Registration will take place on Friday night next in the rathcline GAA clubhouse from 8pm to 9pm. it is very important that every child is registered as without registration they cannot play football which no child should be deprived of.
Primary School Success
Lanesborough Primary School Congratulations to Cormac Casey Jack Madigan Orla Lyons and Louise Costello on their success at the Credit Union Quiz held recently. The victorious team now go forward to Moate for the Chapter Quiz final.
Community Games – Congratulations to the following for their success in the Community Games Art Under 8 Paulina Wit 2nd, Hetija Bula 3rd Under 12 Ernie Brunt 2nd
Swimming – Heartiest congratulations to Duileach and Seadhna Ryan on their recent success in the All-Ireland Minor Schools held in the NAC Dublin. Duileach came second in under 11 Backstroke and 4th in the 100 Individual Medley while Seadhna came 4th in the 100 Individual Medley under 13.
Death
A very popular Irish dance teacher Lisa Cullen who taught Irish dancing to many young dancers in Lanesboro over the past few years was tragically killed in an accident on the Longford/Kenagh Road on Wednesday 5th February. She will be sadly missed in our area by all her students and also their parents who had nothing but the height of respect for this young lady. We extend our deepest sympathy to her parents Roseann and John, partner James Keenan, brothers Mark, John and Darragh, grandparents, relatives and so many friends.
Bursary Award for Micheál
Congratulations to Micheál O’Sullivan, Lehery and Principal of Stonepark National School who was recently announced as a recipient of a bursary award from the Irish National Teachers Association and Prim Ed Publishing. The bursary was awarded to help fund education research on school leadership.
The project is part of a Masters degree in Trinity College and it will research issues for school principals in deploying, leading and managing Special Needs Assistants in Irish primary schools.
Micheál received his award a presentation in the Teachers club, Dublin.
Philadelphia Here I Come
Next weekend Friday 21st, Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd Newtowncashel Drama Group will present Philadelphia Here I Come in the Hill. Doors open each night at 8pm and the play will commence at 8.30pm. Local girl, Orla O’Brien who will play Madge, has been a member has been a member of the group for the past 11 years and once again she will play a leading role in the play.
Admission is by ticket only and they can be booked by phoning Kevin 086-2521536, they are priced at €10 for adults and €5 for primary and secondary school students.
Death
The death occurred of one of our former residents on Sunday 9th February. Jim Reynolds formerly of 2 The Green was a retired Garda Sergeant having served in Gorey Co. Wexford. Jim was predeceased by his mother Eileen, who later resided on the Rathcline Road, his father Tom, brothers Seanie and Benny, and he is survived by his children Kevin, Clodagh and James, wife Rita, brothers Mossie and Fr. Kevin, sisters Rosemary, Eileen, Ann and Theresa to whom we extend our sincere sympathy
Fermoyle Mixed School

Death
It is with the greatest of sadness I record the death at Our Lady’s Manor, Edgeworthstown on Sunday 9th February of Canon Jeremiah Macaulay, for parish priest of the parish of Rathcline. Never has a death been met with such sadness. He was the most personable of men and a man whose huge heart welcomed and comforted everyone that came to him for a chat. His warmth was as undeniable as it was genuine and the goodness he did in our community will never ever be forgotten. Gone is a saint that it was a wonderful pleasure to have known but his memory will be everlasting. His remains reposed at Our Lady’s Manor chapel on Tuesday last followed by removal to his native St. Mary’s Church, Ferbane. On Wednesday following his Requiem Mass his remains were interred in Clonmacnois cemetery.
To his sisters, Nan and Maura, Bishop Francis Duffy, Bishop Emeritus Colm O’Reilly, fellow priests, relatives and multitude of friends we extend our deepest sympathy.
Clothes Collection
If you have old clothes and bed linen that you no longer require you can give them to the Rathcline Ladies club who are presently doing a clothes collection. You can drop them off with Mike Greene on the Green or contact Mike or Madaleine Murray to arrange collection
Midterm Camp
LARCC cancer support centre is delighted to host an Arts and Wellbeing midterm camp at Coole Road, Multyfarnham over the midterm period. There are two camps and you should contact Audrey in relation to bookings and further information – her phone number is 044 93 71971.
Lough Ree 2000 Bridge Club

Ronan Mc Cormack Rosactive Weekend
The Ronan Mc Cormack Charity Challenge with a variety of events to raise money for a number of charities will take place on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd March. The response so far has been thoroughly fantastic. Make sure you play some part in the activities of the weekend – you will be part of a growing number making the weekend another very special weekend and all in the memory of a great young man.
The entire weekend is in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation and Roscommon Special Olympics.
Saturday will commence with the 100km cycle from Roscommon to Mountbellew and back again to Roscommon. Alternatively you can cycle the 100km from Carnmore in County Galway to Mountbellew and back again to Carnmore. The cyclist will meet up in Mountbellew before returning to their original starting point. To register for the cycle it is €30 the 5km is €15 or the cycle and 5km €40.
On Saturday night there will be a Social Nigh t in Foxe’s bar which will include a Dart competition – the fund of which will go to Special Olympics Roscommon.
On Sunday 2nd the day’s events will commence at 10am with Invacare Series Elite Paracycycle Criterium featuring Ireland’s Elite Paracyclists – sign in 8.45 to 9.30am.
At 11am “Taking the Dis” a 2km Push, Cycle or Roll to showcase the talents of people with different abilities – sign in from 9 to 10am.
12 noon will see the commencement of the 5km Sub 30 Run – a close circuit road race – sign in 10 to 11.30am.
At 12.30 5km Lappers Challenge a Fun Run or Push around the streets of Roscommon Town – sign in from 10.30 to 12noon.
