Reunion of Class of 40 years ago
Were you one of the girls that began secondary school in September 1969 and on 22nd June 1974 finished their Leaving Certificate in the local Convent of Mercy, Secondary School in Lanesboro? It is hoped to have a small reunion get together to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of that momentous occasion. Improve your English Language skills
Free English language classes for non-native speakers will take place in Lanesboro Library every Tuesday evening from 7.00 p.m. – 9. p.m. Classes will start on Tuesday, February 4th and finish on Tuesday, March 11th. Lanesboro Community College and Open Evening
On Wednesday 22nd January at Lanesboro Community college the school will host their Open day and evening.10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: All 5th and 6th classes from the local National Schools will attend an open morning in the school. They will experience a taste of secondary school life, visit all the different departments, meet teachers and pupils, and begin to think of which subjects they will choose from the 18 currently on offer right through Junior Cert to Leaving Cert, all to Higher Level.
7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. All parents are invited to meet the teaching staff, discuss subject choices, take a tour of the school, and make any enquiry they may feel is relevant. The Principal’s address will take place at 7 p.m. sharp. Tea will be served.
A Talk on the Wildlife of Lough Ree
The Irish Wildlife Trust Longford branch is organising a presentation on the Wildlife of Lough Ree in St. Mary’s Parish Hall on Tuesday evening 28th January at 8pm. Mark Craven will give a video presentation of the animals and birdlife he recorded in and around in the area of Lough Ree.
It promises to be a fascination evening and it is one that nobody should miss as it will increase the knowledge base of all the wildlife in and around our area.
In 2007 white tailed eagles were reintroduced to Ireland and last July the first Irish born chicks were born on Lough Derg. One of the remarkable scenes that will be shown on the night will be a close up video presentation of Lough Ree’s White Tailed Eagle. Mark will also show starlings settling to roost in the reeds among many other scenes.
This is an evening of sheer beauty for all the family and one not to be missed either by young or old.

Rathcline Ladies
At the Ladies AGM on Sunday last the following were elected to hold office in the club for the coming year Chairperson – Madaleine Murray, Vice Chairperson – Paula Kenny, Secretary – Michael Greene, Assistant Secretary – Karina Mulvihill, Treasurer Paddy Nolan, Assistant Treasurer – Patrice Nolan, PRO – Kieran Feeney and Children’s Officer – Marie English.
The club looks forward to further development during the coming year and if you would like to be part of the success of the club you are welcome to come along or contact any of the above committee.
Correction
Last week when I was recording the untimely death of Donal Hyland I, in error, recorded Anita, Frances and Patricia as his daughters. As we all know Donal was a single man and the three girls were his sisters. I apologise to his family and friends for the error in writing.
Donal spent only part of his childhood in Augharana before moving to Mullingar in 1994 at the age of 10.
Death
A member of one of the most popular families to come to Lanesboro and live on the Green passed away last week. June O’Neill, formerly 9 The Green moved to the US a number of years ago, she had been a regular visitor home over the years. June was laid to rest following her funeral mass in St. Paul the Apostle Church, McLean Ave, Yonkers on Thursday last 9th January. We extend our deepest sympathy to her sisters Bernie, Patsy and Maura and her brother Joe in the USA and her brother Bobby in England.

We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Sean Farrell and his extended family, Barnacor, on the death of his mother Brigid Farrell, Clonfuigh, Killashee last week.

This is the time to get your ticket and support
The Rathcline GAA club annual New Year draw will take place on Saturday 25th January. Traditionally the funds collected from this draw go towards insuring the club for the coming year and will also pay for registration of members and players along with the entry fees to all competitions.
This year there is a great need for a hugely successful draw to keep the repayments on the clubhouse and grounds up to date. With a new executive in place for the coming year they need your support to help ease their way into the running of the club for the coming year and supporting the draw will make the start a great one.
There is no need for me to stress further but this draw is hugely important to the club and they would ask absolutely everyone to support by buying tickets and also encouraging others to buy. Tickets are priced at only €10 and the prize structure is – 1st €1500, 2nd €750, 3rd €500, 4th €250, 5th €200, 6th €200, 7th €200 and 8th €200.
The draw will take place in the Swan Tavern on Friday night 25th January at 11am. Tickets are available locally or from O’Brien’s.
Shannon Gaels
The club will hold its registration night on Friday night 7th February. The club has agreed that the registration for the coming year will be; €30 for single player and €45 two or more children or family.
Rathcline GAA Lotto
The numbers drawn in the lottery on Saturday night 13th January were 2, 3, 10, 14, 24 and 41. There was no winner of the Rathcline GAA lottery for a jackpot of €700. The four winners of €25 each were Archie Bell, Derek and Shane Casserley, Clonfower, Benny O’Brien, Longford and James and Cathal Mulvihill. The jackpot for next Saturday now rises to €800.
Ronan Mc Cormack Rosactive Weekend
Last year was the first year remembering the passing of Ronan Mc Cormack Charity Challenge with a variety of events to raise money for charities. The response was thoroughly phenomenal and the event will again take place this year on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd March.
Ronan was a local lad, a larger than life character with a great attitude to life and his passing deprived us all of many happy days in his company. This is a wonderful way to acknowledge and celebrate his life and we should all support in whatever way we can be involved during the weekend. The entire weekend is in aid of the Jack and Jill Foundation and Roscommon Special Olympics.
Saturday will commence with the 100km cycle from Roscommon to Mountbellew and back again to Roscommon. Alternatively you can cycle the 100km from Carnmore in County Galway to Mountbellew and back again to Carnmore. The cyclist will meet up in Mountbellew before returning to their original starting point. To register for the cycle it is €30 the 5km is €15 or the cycle and 5km €40.
On Saturday night there will be a Social Nigh t in Foxe’s bar which will include a Dart competition – the fund of which will go to Special Olympics Roscommon.
On Sunday 2nd the day’s events will commence at 10am with Invacare Series Elite Paracycycle Criterium featuring Ireland’s Elite Paracyclists – sign in 8.45 to 9.30am.
At 11am “Taking the Dis” a 2km Push, Cycle or Roll to showcase the talents of people with different abilities – sign in from 9 to 10am.
12 noon will see the commencement of the 5km Sub 30 Run – a close circuit road race – sign in 10 to 11.30am.
At 12.30 5km Lappers Challenge a Fun Run or Push around the streets of Roscommon Town – sign in from 10.30 to 12noon.
Connaught Club Ground of the Year
At the Connacht GAA Provincial Awards Banquet in the Mc William Park Hotel, Claremorris on Friday night last the St. Faithleach’s GAA club gained rightful recognition for the wonderful work they have done in the development of their club grounds when they were awarded Roscommon GAA Club Ground of the Year 2013 and the overall Winner of the “Connaught GAA Club Ground of the Year 2013. It was a fitting reward for the magnificent work done over the years and also the care and maintenance that is continually ongoing in and around the ground.
Meal on Wheels
The collection box is still available for donations in O’Brien’s for Longford Social services Meal on Wheels collection. Please make donations as the meal on Wheels service is vital within our parish with a number of people receiving meals during each week.

Lanesboro Tri Club Open Night
One of the most successful clubs in our area, Lanesboro Tri Club, will host their Open Night on Saturday 18th January in the Co-Op Hall from 7 to 9pm. Lanesboro Tri club has a real happy atmosphere and it welcomes everyone that has an interest in the sport. Triathlon training combines swimming, cycling and running and gets you very fit. Your challenge is always against yourself and all grades and challenges are catered for. This is a great opportunity for trying not only one sport but a combination of three and perhaps try a new combination sport for the first time.
You will definitely get fit and you will also make new friends, indeed a wide variety of friends.
Come along and meet members who couldn’t run, couldn’t cycle very far and couldn’t swim, but set a goal and now are very proud TRIATHLETES! Believe and you can do it!

The results for the first competition of the New Year that took place on Wednesday 8th January are: N/S 1st Frank and Frances Brennan, 2nd tie between Una Clarke and Eileen Kelly & Phil Chalmers and Cyril Hussey. Death
Another of our former residents passed away on Sunday 22nd December following a period of illness at Balgeeth, Kilmessan, Co. Meath. Geraldine (Gerry) Farrelly formerly of the Green died in care of her family and we would like to extend our deepest sympathy to her husband Richard, son Peter, daughters Maud, Aideen, Olivia, relatives and friends
Community College Success at Young Scientist
It has been a busy week for the students of Lanesboro Community College in the BT Young Scientist. Daniel O’ Reilly, Will Dennigan and Brian Lyons were representing themselves and their school in the 50th Young Scientist exhibition. This is the 14th year that the college has successfully reached the finals and they were delighted that we could again represent our school, our community and our county with pride.
The entry ceremony took place on Wednesday the 9th, with President Michael D Higgins officially opening proceedings. In the afternoon the first round of judging took place. Each of the lads was closely questioned by an expert from 3rd level or industry on their project. Their report book was then taken away and marked. This happens at least three times and although it can be stressful it is a positive experience as the judges were very complimentary. BT Young Scientist is open to the public so Brian, Daniel and Will were busy talking about their project to the many groups and individuals that visited their stands. They were particularly delighted with the interest shown by people and students from the local area that made a point of visiting them. It has being a great experience for all those involved and they are a credit to themselves and their school for being part of this prestigious national event. As the Minister of Education, Ruairí Quinn said that all the students who made it to the BT Young Scientist exhibition were already winners. However there was incredible delight when after the ceremony it was found that Brian Lyons’s project entitled; “Are computer games the way forward for teaching maths” had received an award in its category!
Well done to all the Young Scientists and we look forward to seeing their projects displayed at the open evening in Lanesboro Community College on the 22nd January. Three very interesting projects excellently presented and well worth going along on the 22nd to see the work of those fine young men.

Christmas Day Run Thank You
The MS Christmas Day Run took place again for the 23rd year and this year we again exceeded our previous record for participants, with 165 people taking part this year. This has resulted in over €6,300 so far been handed over to the Longford branch of the MS Society. The winners this year were: 1st: John Mulvihill, 2nd: Patrick Sharkey, 3rd: Joe Masterson, 1st Lady: Adrianna Melia, 1st Under 16 boy: Ros Claffey, 1st Under 16 Girl: Tanya Farrell, the award for most sponsorship went to Gerard Finn and the outstanding achievement award went to Ciaran Nolan. The organisers would like to thank everyone who took part and collected sponsorship and in particular would like to thank all who helped out on the day, to Peter Hanley Motors for sponsoring the T-shirts that were given to each participant yet again and to everyone else who helped to continue to make the run a great success and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year.
Boro Celtic makes winning start
Boro travelled to Daingean in Co. Offaly for an away tie in the Combined Counties Cup. The wet and windy conditions made life difficult for all involved. In a competitive first half Boro spurned numerous chances to take the lead before Daingean scored from a deflected free kick just before half time to make it 1-0 to the home side. Boro upped the effort levels in the second half and dominated proceedings with Daragh Hussey scoring twice to cap a wonderful display. The match was wrapped up towards the end when Peter Flynn picked up the ball in the Daingean box and fired home for a 3-1 victory. Next Saturday Boro take on Camlin in a crucial league game in the Mall in Longford and the game will kick off at 2:00pm
Pike Angling AGM
Lanesboro Pike Angling club will hold their AGM on Wednesday 22nd January at 8pm in the Yacht Bar Lanesboro. On the agenda will be – chairman’s address, secretary’s report, treasurers report and the election of the committee.
Rathcline GAA
A reminder to all club members and supporters that the New Year’s draw takes place in Adie’s on the 25th of January. Minor Club
Best wishes to all the young men of the parish who are playing schools football in Leinster Competitions this week.
The club are actively encouraging fathers to get involved with the minor club at all levels of participation. It’s important, for the club to succeed; they need good support from parents of players.

Rathcline Ladies
A well-attended AGM took place in Clonbonny on Sunday evening. The Ladies go from strength to strength at all levels of competition, with championship wins for the U 16s and senior Ladies last year.

There is a U 16 presentation of medals for the championship winning team of 2013. A brilliant effort by all the girls throughout the year saw them win a thrilling final against Carrickedmond by a point. The presentation takes place at 6 pm in the clubhouse.
And don’t forget the Rathcline Senior Ladies have their medal presentation on the 1st February in the Peer Inn, a few weeks off yet, but after the effort and passion shown by the ladies in a year that they won the Intermediate Championship, it’s certainly a night to look forward to.
Congrats to Cian Beirne and Rachel Kiernan on their recent engagement, also congrats to Brendan Rooney and Melissa Farrell on the birth of baby boy Dylan!

St. Faithleach’s GAA
Club Ground of the Year: St. Faithleachs GAA Club were awarded the “Roscommon GAA Club Ground of the Year 2013 and the overall winner of the “Connaught GAA Club Ground of the Year 2013” at the Connacht GAA Provincial Awards Banquet in Mc William Park Hotel, Claremorris on Friday night last. A fantastic achievement for the club and all involved. St. Faithleachs GAA Club’s former Chairman Frank Curley and groundsman Henry Kenny accepted the awards on behalf of the Club.
Membership/Registration: 2014 Player Registration and club membership is now due. Adult players €60, Under18 players and students €30, family membership €100 and social membership €30.
