Lanesboro Tourism/Tidy Towns
The committee would like to thank those who turned up for the clean-up on Saturday last. Now is the time of year when your community needs you as so many are working hard in preparation for the tidy towns competition adjudication. Judging this year will take place between 1st and 30th June.
The weekly clean up continues every Monday meeting at St. Mary’s Parish hall at 6.45 and the clean-up will begin at 7pm and continue to 8pm. All sections of the community are invited to mobilise themselves toward the clean ups on Monday evenings.
The committee is seeking the full support from the local community in an effort to improve on last year’s marks. Shop owners, businesses and householders are asked to plant window boxes and hanging baskets and to have them in place by the end of the month.

The €15,000 in the tourism lotto remains to be won.
Parish Night at the Dogs
Rathcline Ladies and the Shannon Gaels Minor club has come up with, what promises to be, a wonderful night out for the parish at the dogs. Last year the Rathcline ladies, on their own, held a wonderful night out at Longford Greyhound track and this year with the linking up of the Shannon Gaels Minor Club it promises to be a very special night. The night in question is Friday night 28th June.
Both clubs are making tremendous strides in making sure that the night will be a wonderful family and parish night out. Buying tickets in itself will be marvellous but we encourage everyone to come along, fill Longford Greyhound track to the rafters and make this the most memorable and special night out for the parish and our friends.
Tickets are now on sale from at €10 each in O’Brien’s or from members of either club. This is a special night of celebrating the family importance to these clubs that has given so much fun and sport to so many young people in the parish for so many years. Both clubs aim to continue, develop and prosper and this can only be done with your continued support for both clubs and on the night at the dogs.
Lanesboro Bridge Club
The results of the competition held on Wednesday 15th May are: 1st Frank and Frances Brennan, 2nd Mae Casey and Philomena Walsh, 3rd Mona O’Flaherty and Bernadette Gillen and Mary Mc Gushin and Bernadette Clancy.
The AGM and the summer competition will take place on Wednesday 29th may and the dinner will take place on Thursday 30th May. The name for both should be with the secretary on or before Wednesday 22nd May.

Historic Occasion and More to Come!!
Thursday last 16th May in Navan proved to be a historic day for the Fermoyle National School. They returned following their qualification the previous week for the Leinster final of the FAI National School 5-a-side soccer championship.
The school competed in the ‘ A section Boys ‘ and advanced to the Leinster finals, firstly from Longford and then from the regional finals in North Leinster. To reach the provincial final really is tremendous achievements considering that more than 10,000 players from schools all over Leinster took part in this year’s five -a – side competition.
In the first game on Thursday Fermoyle N.S first defeated the South Leinster Champions Blackwater from county Wexford, on a scoreline of 3 goals to 2. The next match against the Dublin champions, Zion, who coincidentally defeated Fermoyle N.S last year to claim the provincial title proved to be a classic match with the Longford champions displaying great courage and skill to claim the Provincial crown on a scoreline of 3 goals to 1. The final game against the Mid Leinster champions, St. Leonard’s from Kilkenny provided Fermoyle the opportunity to utilise the full squad and all the players proved their worth in drawing the game 4 goals each.
Kian Gilmore, captain of the team was delighted to raise the trophy for the first time ever. The eight boys representing the school are Kian Gilmore (6) goals, Cronan Flood (3) goals Oran Kenny (1) goal, Ronan English, Bryn Peters, Sean Maguire Eanna Mc Grath and Liam Ross.
On Saturday May 25th the National final will be held at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin. This is a wonderful achievement and wonderful source of pride that a team from our parish can run out on the Aviva stadium in an All-Ireland final. We wish all of the team management and players every success and look forward to them doing their victory parade through the town on Saturday evening.
Sympathy
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Mrs Norah Killian and the extended family, Fermoyle, on the death of Fr. Michael Killian, formerly parish priest in Kiltubrid, Co. Leitrim last weekend. Fr Michael was brother of Carmel Stanley, nee Killian and the recently deceased Danny.
Lanesboro Pike Angling Club
On Sunday May 26th the club will hold the Michael Casey Perpetual Trophy Pike Boat competition on Lough Ree. Fishing will be from.11am to 4pm. Entry fee will be taken from 10.30am at Lanesboro harbour. Entry fee is €25 per boat with a maximum of 2 rods per person and 4 rods per boat. The prizes will be limited to1 prize per boat. The presentation will take place following fishing and weigh in at the Yacht bar. This is a member’s only competition only and membership may be taken out on the day. The cost of a wonderful day fishing is adults €10 juniors and OAP`S €5. The club will also be holding a draw for our non-fishing members for a 32” TV /DVD and other cash prizes.

Club Rathcline Lotto Draw
The numbers of the Rathcline GAA lottery draw on Saturday night last for a jackpot of €800 are 3, 6, 10, 30, 37, and 45. The jackpot total €800 was not won. The four €25 winners this week are: Tommy Kelly, Cloonadra, Ballyleague, Paula Kenny, Fermoyle, Jim Mulvihill, Newtowncashel and John L Farrell, Rathcline. Next week’s jackpot will stand at €900.

Siamsa
An Irish language summer course (SIAMSA) will take place on from Monday 8th July to Friday 12th July in Gaelscoil Longfoirt. The course will take place from 9.30am to 3pm each day and will cater for students from third to sixth class. Who will be the Briar of Killashee?
St. Brigid’s GAA club Killashee is hosting the ‘The Briar of Killashee’ – a talent show with a difference. It promises to be a fantastic night in Mc P’s Clondra on Saturday night next 25th May commencing at 9.30pm. All the entertainment will cost you only €10 each. The night is a mock ‘Rose of Tralee with well know local faces as you will never have seen them before. It promises to be one of the most hilarious nights to be held in the county for many a long year.
Ballyboro Girls Double Up
On Monday, 13th May, in damp and windy conditions, Ballyboro U13 Girls claimed a double victory by winning the LDSL League. This result came a week after claiming the Cup Final title in a pulsating and nail biting match against Olympic Rovers which went all the way to penalties. The final game of the league was against Sporting Olympic. The Ballyboro girls knew that a win in this game would put them at the top of the table. After two excellent goals from Jillian Banahan and Ciara Healy, the half time score was 2-0. However, after a penalty awarded to Sporting Olympic was coolly put away, they put in a gigantic effort to score an equaliser. The Ballyboro girls were not about to let their chances of a double victory slip away and Áine Halpin and Aoife Mc Loughlin held Sporting Olympic off while Captain Sarah Scally continued to send some great balls to forward Jennifer Brennan who took every opportunity to score. After some outstanding saves by Ballyboro goalie Marie Kelly, the final whistle blew on a 2-1 scoreline much to the delight of the Ballyboro team and management. The nine girls who include Orla Costello and Ellen Irwin, who is currently injured, lined up to receive their medals from John Maloney. A great end to what was a great year. We congratulate team management of Majella Kelly, Bernadette Scally and John Tynan who did such a wonderful job in looking after the girls all year.
Local Classical Pianist
Peter Regan, son of Frank and Annette Regan, Rockwood, has really been making the headlines with his meteoric rise in the world of classic piano. Peter will hold a fundraising classical music concert in St. John’s Church, Battery Rd., Longford, on Friday next May 24th at 8-00p.m. John O’ Conor, world renowned pianist will also perform and talented violinist, Phoebe White will complete the line-up.
Peter will study piano intensively in Aspen, Colorado, for nine weeks this summer, with some of the most prominent teachers in the world.

Lough Ree 2000 Bridge Club
The Lough Ree 2000 AGM was held on Monday 13th, 2013. Our new President, Mrs Patricia McGann, was inaugurated. The club wishes Patricia a very enjoyable year. The club had another successful year, and look forward to next year with Patricia at the helm.
The Summer Bridge starts June 10th at 7.45 pm.
The President’s dinner was held Saturday night last in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon. 40 members attended and there was a very enjoyable evening. The club would like to thank the Abbey for a fantastic meal. It was good to see old friends back for the event, and, of course, absent friends were missed greatly.

Ballyboro U12s Claim Title
Ballyboro 3 Stonepark 2 AET
Ballyboro were crowned Under 12 league champions on Friday night after coming out of an epic battle following extra time.
The game was a credit to both sides, end to end and played in the right way and spirit.
The first half was played at a terrific pace and it was amazing that there were no goals to show from either side. The Ballyboro back four of Nathan Mc Govern, Owen Diffley, Yakub Kajun and Ronan Banahan along with goalkeeper Dylan Donlon were outstanding.
Boro wee creating chances and Michael Dunne, Liam Ross and Bryn Peters all came close without scoring.
The second half started in the same vein as the first with both sides giving their all in an end to end battle. Stonepark struck first blood when a shot came back off the post before it was swept to the net on the rebound. Ballyboro piled on the pressure and only four minutes elapsed when a brilliant through ball from James Browne reached Cian O’Brien where he coolly lobbed the goalkeeper from all of 25yards. Stonepark reacted to the Ballyboro goal and it was not long before from a free kick a Stonepark player rose highest to head home the lead goal. Ballyboro kept the pressure on and Adam Hegarty and Bryn Peters brought great saves from the Stonepark goalkeeper.
The clock was tipping on and the omens were smiling on Stonepark but with four minutes to play Ballyboro grabbed a well-deserved equaliser. Ballyboro broke down the left wing where Bryn Peters put in a pin point cross meet the head of Liam Ormsby who rattled the net with a great header.
In extra time Ballyboro again piled on the pressure and as time was nearly up in the first period Ballyboro scored a goal worth winning and match and this goal was special. James Browne played a lovely through ball to Cian O’Brien who took on two defenders drawing the cover before sliding a pass to Liam Ormsby. Liam, with a bit to do, took on and beat the last defender before curling a beauty into the top corner of the net.
The second half seen Stonepark making effort to get the equaliser but Ballyboro youngsters defended stoutly to win a titanic struggle. Every credit must go to both sides for a terrific game.

Rathcline GAA
Reserve League 2 – We are now in the business end of this competition with a home semi-final against St. Columba’s next weekend on Saturday 25th May in Clonbonny at 7pm. This is a magnificent achievement for Joe Rooney and his team in achieving four consecutive semi-final spots in as many years. This year has been the hardest of all with diminished numbers to pick from as well as contending with an injury stricken panel throughout the campaign. We hope that as many supporters, members and parishioners will come out on Saturday to support the team in their bid to claim a place in the final against the winners of Ballymahon and St. Mary’s Granard.

Senior League – Commiserations to our senior football team who suffered their second defeat of the year to the hands of Mostrim in Clonbonny on Friday night last. Final score: Rathcline 2-07, Mostrim 2-12. Most people would agree that it was a case of Rathcline throwing away two points and not pushing on while we had the ascendency in the critical point in the second half of the match. The result puts Rathcline in mid table with a game in hand. There is now a two week break before Round 4 of the league. Rathcline play away to Fr. Manning Gaels on Friday 31st May in Monaduff at 8pm. This is followed by a quick turnaround time to play Dromard on the following Bank Holiday Monday on 3rd June at 2:30pm. Sympathies – The club would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Cullen Family, Rathcline Road on the passing of Chris’s sister – Ann Whelan on Wednesday last 15th May. Funeral mass took place in Clonegal in Co Carlow on Friday last.
Extra vigilance needed – Due to the increased occurrences of robberies throughout the country, especially at GAA clubs, we are asking all our patrons be extra careful in terms of leaving valuables in cars in the parking area during matches/training sessions.
Congratulations to Fermoyle National School 5 aside soccer team on reaching the All Ireland final next Saturday afternoon in the Aviva stadium. The team qualified through the group stage competition which was recently held in Navan. The team is managed by Denis Connerton and we wish all involved the very best of luck on Saturday.
Shannon Gaels – There is an Under 8 Blitz scheduled to take place in Kenagh on Wednesday evening coming 22nd May. We ask all parents to stay in touch with team mentors for more details. As per the normal routine, Under 6 training continues every Friday evening in Clonbonny. Training will take place between 6:45pm and 7:45pm.
Western Gaels – Under 14 – Round 7 of the league continues next Tuesday evening 21st May with an away game to Northern Gaels in the Laurels at 7:30pm. A win in this game will set the team up nicely for a semi-final spot. Currently the team lie in third position with a game in hand. Well done to all concerned.
U16 – Rd 3 of the shield takes place this coming Monday evening 20th May when the team host Ballymahon/Forgney Gaels at 7:30pm in Dunbeggan.
Minor – Commiserations to our Minor team who were defeated by St. Colmcilles on Monday evening last 13th May in Clonbonny. Training for U16 & Minor continues this week per the normal routine. Players will get the text message in advance of training.
Shannon Gaels and Rathcline Ladies are running a joint fundraising venture “Dog Night” on Friday night 28th June at Longford Greyhound track. Tickets are now in circulation for the event and can be received from any member of either executive. A great night’s entertainment is guaranteed. Please support this event.
St. Faithleach’s GAA
Senior Championship: Our senior championship game on Sunday against Padraig Pearses was postponed due to pitch conditions.
“It Takes Two”: St. Faithleachs GAA Club, in conjunction with Roscommon/Mayo Hospice, held our “Joe Dolan/Tina Turner” Night on Saturday last in the clubhouse. Many thanks and well done to all our contestants: “Tina Turner Acts” – Róisin Collier, Phyllis Duffy, Qona Cox & her backing singers. “Joe Dolan Acts” – Denis Mc Loone & Ronan Collier. Thanks to our audience, the voters, on the night, for your tremendous support. Congratulations to our winning act – Qona Cox aka “Tina” & her backing singers, Michelle Malone, Janet Melia & Ursula Kilcoyne, who will represent St. Faithleachs GAA club in the grand final on Saturday 15th June in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon. The club expresses its thanks to Tommy Keenan for providing the music and entertainment on the night, our MC Derek Thompson, to the staff of the clubhouse, all who helped out in preparation for the event and all who supported same.
U16 Boys – Championship: Our U16’s game against Western Gaels was postponed due to pitch conditions.
U8/U10 Go Games Blitzes: Our U10’s Blitz was postponed on Saturday last. U8 Blitz takes place next Saturday in 25th May in Castlerea at 11.00am – Group 3 (St. Faithleachs, Kilbride, Castlerea St. Kevin’s & St. Aidans).
St. Faithleachs GAA Cúl Camp 2013: Preparations are underway for the 2013 GAA Cúl Camp to be held by St. Faithleachs GAA Club from Monday 15th July to Friday 19th July (10.00am to 2.30pm). Application forms available through local schools or at St. Faithleachs GAA clubhouse or at training sessions. Registration night takes place on Saturday 1st June in the clubhouse from 8.00/9.00pm. Cúl Camp for children Aged 5/13yrs. Charge: €35 per Child (reduced rates for family).
