Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Lough Ree Golfing Society

On Saturday last the 27th April the society had its first outing for 2013 to Strokestown Golf Course. The course was in excellent condition and this, coupled with the glorious sunshine, enabled all to experience a very enjoyable day’s golf. There was a great turnout and it was lovely to see some young Lanesborough and Newtown Cashel locals joining the society; hope you all had a good experience lads and that you will be back!

Thanks to the ladies and gents at Strokestown Golf Club for the nice refreshments before and after the golf.

Now for the results (we were all winners!): nearest the pin on par three was Mick Brennan; the first nine was won by Alan Farrell on 17 points (best last six holes); the back nine was won by Sean Brennan on 19 points. The fourth prize went to Marie Simpson on 32 points just pipping Aidan Cassidy on countback. Third went to Brendan Whitty also on 32 but best back nine of 18 points. The second place was won by Peter Day with 35 points and a good 36 points won the first prize for Colm Dardis who is also our golfer of the year for 2012. Lough Ree Athletic Club

Last week when referring to our youngsters visit to the new indoor facility at A.I.T. Athlone, we gave credit to Viki Kajan and Róisín Brennan for their success in the 600m and Turbo Javelin respectively.

Now that the full results are available the club finds that they did much better than the club thought. The talented Róisín also won the long jump U11 and was third in the 600m.  Louise Costello was second in the very competitive 60m U11 sprint. Alannah Flood had an unusual double 2nd in the 600m and the long jump U11 while Victoria Gedrych was second in the Turbo Javelin U10 with Sonla Benlotaite was third in the Long Jump.

The club had only U10 boys in action and not too many at that- yet they performed remarkably well. Aaron Kenny won the long jump with Reece Kenny taking the third spot. Jamie Hagan had a remarkable double third in the 60m sprint and third in the 500m, a long race for that age group. Well done to all competitors they did the club well.

Training takes place as usual on Tuesday evenings at 7pm and more often if it is felt necessary.

Round 5 takes place a week later on Tuesday 7th May when Western Gaels play host to St. Francis in Clonbonny at 7:30pm. We wish the team and management the very best of luck in these games.

It was a tough week for our U16 Western Gaels team suffering two losses in the Division 1 League. On Monday evening 22nd April, Western Gaels went down to St. Colmcilles on a final score: Western Gaels 1-11, St. Colmcilles 3-08. Then on Saturday evening 27th April, the team was desperately unlucky in the narrow defeat to Northern Gaels in Abbeylara with the final score Western Gaels 1-07, Northern Gaels 1-09. The performances have been excellent in running the traditionally big underage teams close. Hopefully lady luck will change in our favour in the next Juvenile outing.

At this stage everyone who is taking part should be allocated to a team and have their own sponsorship card. Cards are readily available from our financial committee members or indeed any executive member. We are looking for a big uptake from the parish and to make it a weekend to remember. This event is more than just a fundraiser for the club but a social outing for our members, friends and parishioners with a night out in Westport town. Based on previous year’s outings to Croagh Patrick, the club has experienced an enjoyable and rewarding day out with lots of crack in the process.

The club has booked a limited number of apartments in the harbour mills accommodation centre in Westport at €45 per person. Please contact Lorraine Farrell ASAP on (087) 6827966 if you are interested in availing of this accommodation service.
