Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes

Shannon Gaels in All Ireland Final

Saturday evening last in Finglas was a momentous night in the history of the Shannon Gaels Minor Club. The Scór na nÓg sketch team won the Leinster final with a masterly performance by all involved and they now not only represent our parish but they will now represent Longford and Leinster in the All-Ireland final that will take place in Derry on Saturday 23rd February.

The sketch team that represented the club and done us so proud are: Lauren Guinan, Dearbhail Flood, Laura and Anna Peters, Shane Kenny, Andrew Ward, Niall Keane and Jack O’Loughlin.

The marvellous thing about this victory is that it shows that the minor club extends its activities from the playing field to the stage and offers every youngster in the parish, whether they are footballers or not, the opportunity to be involved with the club. The Scór competition is a marvellous outlet for young people especially at a time when young people claim boredom is a great problem. The club also welcomes the involvement of anybody to help out in it be it in Scór, with teams or just by generally being around the club and giving a hand where needed.

Wednesday Gathering Meeting

There was a great meeting in preparation of the upcoming Gathering 2013 in Adie’s meeting room and many ideas were put forward for recommendation. A follow up meeting will take place this Wednesday 16th January again in Adie’s meeting room at 8pm. If you can please come along and throw in your ideas and thoughts for what promises to be a major hooley and celebration of Rathcline and Lanesboro.

The Gathering in our parish is about the residents of the parish past and present. We hope that a wonderful response will be forthcoming from anyone that ever has a connection to Rathcline and Lanesboro will make the effort to join us on August bank Holiday weekend from Friday 2nd to Monday 5th August.

Shauna is Young Scientist

The Young Scientist competition took place during last week. Shauna O’Neill, daughter of James and Margaret O’Neill, Cloontuskert took high accolades last year where she won third prize in the Technology Intermediate Individual category and this year Shauna moved into the major winners category when she was awarded ‘Individual runner-up’. Her project ‘The effect of static magnetic fields on molecular and macroscopic properties of water’ gained huge recognition and it was marvelous for her that her hard work was rewarded with this major award. Shauna is a fifth year student of  Scoil Muire gan Smal, Roscommon and it is a credit to her school that they can have a student competing at the very highest level over a sustained period of time. Shauna takes home a trophy and a cheque for €1,200 and also was awarded the Intel prize. The Intel award is given to the best project in the chemical, physical and mathematical sciences category, and goes forward to the annual Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in May and Shauna won a trip for herself and her teacher to Arizona for the Fair. The ISEF gathers more than 1,600 of the world’s most promising young scientists together and the will compete for $3m (€2.2m) in awards.

We congratulate Shauna on her wonderful achievement and wish her every success in Arizona.

Fair Day AGM

The AGM of the Fair Day committee will take place this Thursday night 17th January in the Yacht Bar at 9.30pm.

The Fair Day is one of the best day spent in Lanesboro and it brings back to life an occasion that was widely known and respected as one of the finest horse fairs in the midlands.

The committee is hard working and vibrant and it would be especially pleasing to see a large number from the community that enjoys the fair day turning up at the meeting to support this very active committee.

Parking at Mass Time

Over the past number of weeks there are more and more attending weekend masses at St. Mary’s Church. We would like to ask those attending mass to be conscious of parking. There are times that emergency vehicles have to travel through the area of the Green and parking on the Green should be on only one side of the road only to allow ease of access through to the inner houses. There should never be parking on the grass. On the old school road/church road especially close to the junction there should also be only singular side parking. Drivers are also asked to be conscious not to block driveways in the vicinity of the church.

Lanesboro Primary School at the Young Scientist

Pupils from 5th & 6th classes along with their teachers exhibited their project

‘What Forces Influences Flight?’ at the RDS BT Young Scientist Exhibition on Saturday last.

This project was the culmination of a lot of effort put in by both pupils and their teacher, Ms Nevin, who worked together in after school sessions since November to put the project together.  The pupils researched the topic and carried out many experiments using simple materials to innovatively demonstrate what impacts flight using paper planes, kites, balloons and strings!

Along with the School principal, Claire Murphy and the other teachers in the school, and ancillary staff, many parents helped out on the evening sessions to assist Ms Nevin and her class.

At the exhibition, the pupils had an extremely busy day explaining their project to the constant stream of onlookers who were interested in the subject.  The project was reviewed by the judges, who gave very positive feedback to the pupils.  The judges highly commended the knowledge of the children, the experiments they had run and the models they demonstrated at the exhibition. As well as presenting such positive feedback, the judges also presented a trophy to the pupils and their teacher.

The pupils and teachers would like to thank all those who gave of their time in supporting them during the project whether it was helping in the after school sessions or those who drove and supervised the pupils on Saturday at the RDS.

Shannon Gaels Minor Club

Congratulations to our Scór na nÓg team who performed so majestically at the Leinster Scór na nÓg final at the Erins Isle club last Saturday. Emerging as Leinster champions was a wonderful result for the team who have worked so hard. They now travel on Saturday 23rd to Derry for the All-Ireland final. This is a culmination a 3 years’ work and the dedication of the team has been outstanding. Throughout, the team was under the excellent guidance of Maura Tobin whose time and hard work was well rewarded on Saturday. The club would like to say a very big thank you to Maura. The club would also like to say a very big thank you to Ger Kirwan and his daughter, Rhoslyn, for travelling across the city to support his old club. It was great for the club to meet Gerard and Rhoslyn.

Sympathy: We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Fr. Tadgh and Sr Brendan Kenny, Fermoyle on the death of their sister Sr Rose Kenny last weekend. Sr Rose was also aunt to our club chairman Sean Kenny and we would like to extend our sympathy to Sean and the entire Kenny family on their loss.

Into Leinster final – Congratulations to our club players Jack Rooney, Owen Sorohan and Shane Kenny and also the Community College players Diarmuid Murtagh and Shane Cosgrove who all played huge parts in the tremendous win over Dublin in the Leinster Senior Vocational School semi-final in Cashel on Saturday. They now will play the Leinster final in Cashel on Saturday week at 2pm against either Kildare or Meath.

Saturday 12th January will live long in the memory of Shane Kenny as he was part of the victorious Longford team that beat Dublin and had to then rush to Finglas for the Scór final where he picked up his Leinster medal – we hope he picks up his second one on Saturday week.

Table Quiz

In preparation for a quarter of a million euro re-development of the river Shannon west bank and quay wall the Ballyleague Village Renewal and Tidy Towns committee will hold a community table quiz fundraiser on Friday night next January 18th at 9pm in St. Faithleach’s GAA clubhouse. “We would like to invite every home and every business in the Roscommon-Longford area to come along and support us on the night” the Chairman of the committee Gerry Thompson said this week, “we know that dozens of people use the river bank for walking, cycling and other leisure activities every day of the week and we really need these people to come out now and show their support for the re-development that further enhance the area they are using. The plans of the proposed work will also be on display and it is important that everybody has an input so please come along.” The Tidy Towns committee is entirely voluntary and only this week took down the Christmas trees and Christmas lights in the Ballyleague community after a year when they also managed to get an increase of thirty points in the national tidy towns competition – winning a best endeavour award in county Roscommon. Teams of four cost €40 (€10 per person) on Friday night and if you would like to take part or sponsor the committee please contact Chairman Gerry Thompson at 085 1740819 or e mail: keepballyleaguetidy@gmail.com
