Lanesboro Ballyleague Notes
Thank You
The organisers of the annual Multiple Sclerosis Run from Newtowncashel to Lanesboro on Christmas morning would like to say a huge thank you to everybody that took part either as a walker or a runner. The morning was bright dry and mild and it made the journey from Cashel to Lanesboro all the more pleasant. A record number, over 160, turned out on the morning making the occasion most memorable for the record number of participants.
Many home for Christmas and New Year
This year more than any in the recent past a good number of people returned back to the area for the Christmas period and New Year. We would like to say how great it was to meet so many and we hope that your stay was great. Lots of memories of days gone by were recalled and we wish you all a wonderful 2013 and hope to see more and more visiting in the coming year.

Lough Ree AC
The vicinity of the banks of the Shannon and the Parish Hall was the place to be on Christmas morning. It was there you would have encountered the ‘Christmas spirit’. There certainly was a great atmosphere around the place. The reason was that it was the finish of the Newtowncashel to Lanesboro run/walk that seems to be getting bigger and better every year. For this we must thank the dedicated group who organise this annual event to raise funds for Multiple Sclerosis. The success of the run can also be determined by the continuous and supporting sponsorship of Peter Hanley, Hanley Motors. Great credit must go to everyone involved.
The Sub-Aqua club and the Lough Ree AC also contribute to the occasion but to a lesser degree. It all helps to make Christmas morning in Lanesboro/Ballyleague a memorable experience, particularly as many renew old friendships with those home on holiday.
It must be said that the club was somewhat disappointed with the turnout for the ‘Fun Run’ organised for the Primary School children, from the track at the Community College to the hall. It was a ‘Fun Run’ with something for everyone. The first three home were Brian mc Loughlin, Caoilinn Flood and Oran Kenny – all enjoyed the run and the day.
With the new indoor facility opening in Athlone in February the club must get ready for the trial run as the club believes it will be an expensive place to hire.
The club is looking forward to its upcoming AGM and we wish all our young athletes, parents, supporters and readers a very happy New Year.
Shannon Gaels Minor Club
The club would like to extend its deepest sympathy to our club’s vice chairman Mike Costello and his sisters Colette and Loretto on the death of their mother over the Christmas time. We would also like to extend our sympathy to Manus and John Gallagher and their extended family on the death of their sister Dolores, to Joe Gallagher and his family on the death of his mother Marie and also to Paddy Baxter on the death of his brother Michael.
The club had a wonderful evening in the Parish Hall on Sunday last. The club would like to express their thanks to all that got involved in the running and part taking of this variety show. The club were honoured to have so many talented young people in the parish to give of their time for this great show. It was great to see so many turn up for the show and we again say thank you to everyone involved and everyone that attended.
The club would like to thank everyone for their support in the past year and in the year ahead we are seeking that more and more people will get involved in the running and helping out of the club for 2013.
The club would like to wish everybody a very happy and successful 2013.
